Alien prequel no longer! Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof turn the film into Prometheus with Noomi Rapace

Jan. 14, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Remember that one time that we were all freaking out over Ridley Scott's ALIEN prequel? Worry no longer! That prequel has now morphed into a "more original" film called PROMETHEUS.

Scott is set to helm with a release date of March 9th, 2012. Noomi Rapace is now locked in for the lead role of scientist, Elizabeth Shaw. There's also another lead female role, Vickers that has Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron circling. In addition, three other parts need to be cast.

Here's a deeper explanation:

The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts (THE DARKEST HOUR) from Ridley's idea. Damon Lindelof and Scott have been working on a re-write which expands the story taking it in new directions. Apparently the two of them were instructed to go off on their own and come up with the story they wanted using the Alien DNA. Scott, who hasn't entered sci-fi territory since BLADE RUNNER went over the outline of the new story, While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Aliens DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart.

Lindelof added this, "In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie. It's daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true." F*ck yes Lindelof! This is why I love you so much.

Scott wanted Rapace ever since he saw her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Fox says that all the other roles will be cast soon.

Yep. Now I'm really excited.

Extra Tidbit: Rapace used the holes of her old piercings when she was a young punk rocker in her role as Lisbeth Salander.

so I'm confused. does this fim have anything to do with Alien anymore. I was looking forward to seeing how the space Jockey ship got to be stranded on that planet. bummer!

This synopsis is far from being considered original. Both lead actors to play scientist that discover the Alien DNA. This is the same exact side story we saw in Alien 'Resurrection'.

When they use the words, "strands of Alien's DNA" what I think they meant is that the Alien franchise has an influence on Prometheus, not that the film will literally be about Alien DNA. Basically it'll be a new horror movie in space.

Quote;Apparently the two of them were instructed to go off on their own and come up with the story they wanted using the Alien DNA.
Every single Alien movie plot line besides the first one dealt with or had something to do with harvesting or tweaking Alien DNA for military purposes. It sounds to me like they are just going to take the side story from the 2nd,3rd and 4th and embellish it to work entirely has the main plot line.

That part comes from Niki Stevens, the part from Deadline refers to it as an original story.

i think youre missing it, its not saying that its gong to use the actual Alien DNA, just look at what ridley scott said, any fan will see strands of Aliens DNA through out it but its going to be an original story, not that the story is based around the aliens DNA .... i dont know how else to explain it.

wow thats better.

I had no problem of it being a part of the alien franchise back then. But, now there's nothing to complain about when fans bash it hahaha.

So an original story set within the "Alien" universe? And based on the title it will probably tackle the idea of giving life, or creating the spark of life.

Sounds like a good time to me.

ok, so I might be the only one, but I had hopes for a GOOD Alien prequel, by the creator of the franchise... And am I the only one to think there is something dangerously unnatural here : this is SO NOT FOX to do this... Is this a TRAP ? Or is there BIG changes at FOX (Aronofsky on The Wolverine, and now this...) ?

I'm glad they dropped that whole alien sex thing they had in mind. Can't wait to hear more about this "new" movie now.

And I think it would be awesome if they could get all three: Noomi Rapace, Angelina Jolie, and Charlize Theron. (I don't think that's going to happen, though.)

Is the World Ending

Did Fox, the worst studio in the world actually make a cool decision here. I can't wait to see what this develops into.

Remake alien 3 please

Bring back hicks and newt and ignore part 3 and 4. Although they werent bad movies at all, they (especially part 3 ) went the wrong way by killing of 2 good characters in the first 5 minutes. If they were killed at the end of part 3 i could live with it.

He wasn't saying that he wasn't guilty of being involved. Hell, he signed on to work on this project under the presumption that it'd be a prequel....

Hmmm

Ok so it's not Alien prequel, it's a new original story about some aliens. "The keen fan will recognize strands of Aliens DNA"? Is this new story gonna be within or the same universe as Alien at all? It's not totally new but somewhat related to Alien? Maybe this is a first of a few leading to the original planned Alien prequel (the space jockey story) ala Star Wars IV, V, VI was made first, then I,II,III, so Pormetheus is episode I right right right??? Ok i'm not gonna think about it much,

Whenever I read vague descriptions like this it gives me reason to worry, especially when its coming from one of the writers of what has to be one the greatest cockteases/con jobs to air on TV: LOST.

I can hold grudges against writers for a long time. Just ask me how many years I avoided ANYTHING having to do with Joss Whedon because of how much I hated what he did with Alien Resurrection.

And Lindelof didn't just write one episode of Lost, he executive produced it. Meaning he guided it along to its unsatisfying conclusion for 115 episodes.

He ma know how to drag an audience along week after week for years but when he's got to drop all his cards in the space of two hours you tend to catch

Sounds good to me. While part of me wishes for a new, proper Alien movie, this sounds more than intriguing. I know that Ridley Scott hasn't been up to snuff lately, but I have a feeling that his return to sci-fi will return him to those great heights.

PROMETHEUS

Prometheus is a Titan, the son of Iapetus and Themis, and brother to Atlas, Epimetheus and Menoetius. He was a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals. Zeus then punished him for his crime by having him bound to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day. Okay, okay...

With this new info, this is the most hopeful I've ever been for a prequel. Good title, good enthusiasm, but I hope they stay with lower profile actors.

I'm actually neutral to this news. While it would be cool to have another awesome alien movie that was better than 3, 4, and the AVP movies, the prequel seemed unnecessary. I'm excited for Scott to return to sci-fi, and we're getting an original film to boot. Bring it on.
