Bob Odenkirk says Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul may be part sequel, part prequel

11.06.2013

Many of us are still suffering from Jesse Pinkman level withdrawal from the absence of Breaking Bad in our lives, but there's a silver lining with the spinoff show, Better Call Saul, which will star the famed attorney, Saul Goodman, as played by Bob Odenkirk. The actor recently spoke to IGN about the show and addressed a few things, including the possibility of it being part prequel, part sequel (to the events of Breaking Bad), the tone, and the dangers of Breaking Bad cameos.

On the possibility of the show being a prequel and sequel:

Well, I’ve talked to Vince (Gilligan) and Peter (Gould), who are writing and creating the series, about this and I’ve said that a lot of people do want to see what happens to next to Saul. So, I don’t know what they’re going to do. I know they’ve talked about prequel, but they’ve also talked to me about sequel, and they’ve also talked to me about a mix of prequel and sequel.

On the question of the show being more comedy than drama:

I don’t think that’s what it’s going to be. It’s going to be 70% drama and 30% comedy.

On the dangers of having too much of a connection to Breaking Bad:

Oh my God, I told Peter and Vince, right away I said, ‘Look man, let us make this fresh for everyone.’ So that right away, in the first five minutes, every viewer goes, ‘Oh, this isn’t Breaking Bad, this is its own thing.’ And I think they feel the same exact way. There might be a cameo here or there, but I don’t know. We’re going to do a new show.

I know some folks are against a spinoff of Breaking Bad, most notably because it could mean a show that tries to ape the original, but I have confidence in Gilligan and Odenkirk to make Better Call Saul into something unique. Sure, there's always the possibility that it could fail to launch, but I'm more than willing to give it a go, especially after the home run that was Breaking Bad. I don't need a repeat of that show's success, but a new show from the same collaborators? I'm in.

Better Call Saul is currently in active development.

Extra Tidbit: Would you rather see a Jesse Pinkman spinoff or a Saul Goodman spinoff? (Skylar White spinoff, perhaps?)

I'd like to see Pinkman's dealings before Breaking Bad with Saul Goodman... all the shit he got himself into... but that cannot happen as Aaron Paul is too old to play a high school student/recent graduate, and we wouldn't want them to recast that character :)

I hope they go with the prequel/sequel formula.

Lets Do This

I'm in for Better Call Saul because I believe Villigan has the talent and the nuance to present a whole new version of Albuquerque and Saul while preserving some semblance of aesthetic or conceptual continuity to the two series.

I think I'd rather see this show as a sequel. I think it would be cool to relocate the whole setting to Nebraska and see Saul trying to re-establish himself after the events of BB. It can still exist separate from BB and have little ties to the series by including great supporting roles for Saul.
Also, I think an easy way to make this it's own thing is to not have Saul mixed up in any drug rings/cartels for at least 2-3 seasons. Have each season be about him getting mixed up wth a different

Have each season be about him getting mixed up wth a different set of characters and trying to get them out of a legal jam. I'd love to see Saul team up with a bike gang to help them out. Think it could be hilarious.

Seriously?

Saul - Good. Jesse - Meh. Skyler - BAD. Why would anyone want to watch one of the whiniest, bitchiest, STUPIDEST characters to ever grace the small screen? She had her place on BB, as a proto-antagonist; but quite honestly I would be happy to never see her again in any form.

Ooo, booster-gold87, that was SO witty! You really got me with that one! Is your middle name "Skyler" by any chance?

Next time you should try making your come back better than the original joke. Nice try though.

Can't wait for this!

I've always been a big fan of Odenkirk's style of humor ever since his Mr. Show days. I'm excited to see this come together and I like the idea of a show that may have flashbacks to the past but be set in the present. Cameos could be going back and filling in a thing or two from the Bb time frame but they should avoid the whole oh look i bumped into Walt one time at the store before he had a meth empire. Those cameos need to have a connection to whatever current case he's dealing with. It'd be

Gilligan just pulled off one of the best shows of all time. He could do ANYTHING he wants to and this is what he wants to do. I can't argue since he obviously has a good idea and enough interest to get Odenkirk to commit long term. I'm completely in.

As long as Huell is a major character, I'm happy. :)

To be fair, "minor" isn't a very good word to use when you're referring to Huell, sir.

The thing with spinoffs is that it can never be to direct to the original source material, only nice little nods here and there. I can see the creators doing something pretty special with this, so I'm going to remain interested for now.

I hope this is good.

Count me in the cautiously optimistic camp. The cameos shouldn't be too excessive, or they run the risk of tarnishing the Breaking Bad legacy. On the other hand, I would be down for some more Mike Ehrmentraut and Gus.
