Cameron Diaz will star opposite Colin Firth in the Coen Brothers scripted remake of Gambit

02.01.2011

Why am I surprised by this news?

Cameron Diaz will be co-starring with Colin Firth in the remake of GAMBIT.

The 1966 original starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. In this update, Firth stars as, "a London art curator who plans to con a wealthy collector into buying a phony Monet painting. He enlists a Texas steer roper (Diaz) to pose as a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII." The Coens did the screenplay on this. Michael Hoffman (THE LAST STATION) is the one helming.

But why Diaz? Of all the possible choices in the entire world, what did Diaz do that was so special? I used to enjoy Diaz in the past (the 90's) but having to constantly hear her name and see her in shit that I don't care to see has become too much. This woman in no way measures up to the greatness of Shirley MacLaine. Maybe I'm going to hard on her but she needs to take a break then come back and do some mind blowing. Then again, we never know. This could redeem her.

Extra Tidbit: Any hardcore Cameron Diaz fans out there?

Diaz hasn't been "hot" since The Mask... Why does Hollywood still think we find her appealing?

Sure, she's not always good or in good movies, but she can act ("My Sister's Keeper" anyone?), and with Firth and the director of the great 'Last Station' this might be good.

I can't pinpoint what's wrong with Diaz. I actually like her, but she is lacking a certain...something. She's balanced her movie choices well enough though. Colin Firth and a Coen-penned script has me intrigued a little though.

Movie sounds good and like Colin Firth alot. The only flaw in this is Diaz. She's not a bad actress, it's just that she picks shitty movies. She was good in The Box. Not the greatest movie in the world, but it was enjoyable.

It Should Be Noted...

...that "Gambit" was written by the Coens years ago. Years. I'd like to know how many exactly, but I know it's been at least 5+ years. Just like they wrote "A Serious Man" well before "Burn After Reading", but because it was so small, intimate, and had no-names in it, they packaged it with "Burn After Reading" to get it made. And they were successful.

damn

thought this was something about Gambit. You know, the supehero. Dude still needs his own movin... ragin cajun motha fucka!

Oh and Diaz is old news? Well the Coens are becoming the new Pixar, at least if the underwhelming and way over praised True Grit shows anything of the future.

The Coen Brothers never steer anyone wrong? "Intolerable Cruelty" was fairly intolerable. Granted it was a bleep in a pretty solid track record, but I would prefer to see an original before a remake, but I'm still there regardless. Diaz reached her high in "Being John Malkovich" and hopefully she can show her long forgotten chops again.

For the love of God...why are studios still signing Diaz up for big films as such? She's been YESTERDAY'S NEWS for a few years now...can we move on already? Geez Louise... And I agree with everyone that I never thought I'd see the day when the COEN BROS were jumping on the "remake' bandwagon. Coming from the most original team of filmmakers to come out of America in the past two decades, that's kinda sad...

I see your point, though if the remakes are on the standards of True Grit, I don't mind, though I'd like an original prior to this.

Ya beat me to it! I liked Ladykillers enough, but it's pretty weak against the rest of their resumes. I wasn't a Burn After Reading fan either.

You can't really beat Michael Caine in the original. The last time the Coen Brothers tried a straight-up remake (Ladykillers), it fell short. Maybe I'd be more excited if Gambit was based on a book and the Coens were going back to the source material for this. But it's not, so they're aren't. That said, the brothers have a knack for drawing out great performances so it'll be interesting to see what Cameron Diaz can do.

no no no

as much as i don't like the Coen Brothers in general, at least they were making original movies. With True Grit and now Gambit, they've given that up too. (and for the record, i believe the original True Grit is far superior to the remake)

Totally agree. I love the original, but now that Cameron Diaz is attached I'll pass.

NOT a Coen movie

This film has been announced quite a while ago and Colin Firth has been attached - sorta - for at least two years.

What the article forgets to mention, is that the Coens are ONLY writing it and Michael Hoffman is directing.

Looking forward to this. Coen Brothers rock. Loved True Grit so I'm sure Gambit will be amazing as well. Plus Cameron Diaz is hot :)

For The Record...

...I am NOT a fan of the Coen's new trend of remakes (I know True Grit wasn't their first, but still).

Get back to original scripts please
