Damon Lindelof discusses the prequel aspect and title of Prometheus, plus new pics!

05.11.2012

Screenwriter Damon Lindelof had some interesting things to say about PROMETHEUS in a recent interview with EW, particularly about the question of whether or not it's a prequel to ALIEN or something else entirely, as well as the significance of the film's title, which tells a lot about what to expect from the film.  Additionally, a big batch of cool pics from PROMETHEUS were featured, which have the cast and crew rockin' their spacesuits while filming on location.

Here's the highlights:

When asked about the "prequel" status of PROMETHEUS, Lindolof had this to say:

"I do not want to be evasive, but I do have to challenge what you mean by that word. Because that word is a very recent thing. I hadn’t really heard the word “prequel” before Phantom Menace. If your definition is: this is a series of events that precedes an existing movie, then, yes. This series of events that happens in Prometheus precedes the series of events that occurs in Alien. However, one of the other definitions is that the ending of the prequel leads you right up to the beginning of the preceding movie. The Thing prequel ends with a dog running across the Arctic landscape being pursued by a helicopter…."

When asked about how the title, PROMETHEUS, relates to the story of the film:

"I don’t want to sound like the movie is a history lesson, but I do think that the primary take away from the myth of Prometheus is that the Gods were nervous about mankind. They were nervous about what they would be capable of if they had fire. Fire was a big piece of technology that they would build off of. And the story of any creation is eventually a child will try to destroy its parents. It’s a very paranoid world view, mythologically-speaking it pops up a lot. Especially for us Star Wars aficionados.

So the essential story is: I don’t want to give my kid this toy because eventually he will develop it into a weapon that will kill me. So I will therefore withhold it from him. And what is the price I must exact on somebody who betrays me? So Prometheus steals the fire from the Gods, gives it to mankind, knowing exactly what mankind is going to do with it and even though he knows he’s going to be punished for it. So this myth felt perfect for this movie because the movie is all about creation, it’s all about punishment, and it’s all about our desire to understand why we’re here in the first place. It just felt like the natural way to go even though we knew people would have a hard time pronouncing it and that it was wildly pretentious."

These are some great bits that really get me jazzed for the film.  As if I could possibly be more excited.  I love that they have taken such great care to build a film that is beyond our expectations and different than what we've seen before.  As much as I dig the xenomorphs, I am down for something fresh.  The whole thing feels like it's fallen into place in a masterful way.

PROMETHEUS starts being awesome on June 8, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: I'm in the minority of people who loved Lost from start to finish, including the finale. One of the best series ever produced in my humble opinion.

Damon Lindelof said that the ending of Prometheus leads right up to the beginning of Alien. How can that be unless time travel is involved, or the ship goes through a black hole or something. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!!

Why would time travel be involved? The film is set a close 30 years before Alien. Also, quoted by Lindelof "if we’re fortunate enough to do a sequel... it will tangentialize even further away from the original Alien." Ridley has also been quoted as saying there are no Xeno's(Alien 79)in this film. I can't wait for this film either!

It'll be a tough boot to fill. Game of Thrones is top of the charts for me right now, but still...there's currently nothing like Lost...and Fringe doesn't pull me in (which is the common retort to the loss of Lost).

Can't wait for my future boxed set extravaganza!!

Wow, Paul, how can you be a LOST fan and doesn't into FRINGE too?? From one Lost fanatic to other, please please watch it, the 1st season is so so (unlike Lost) but at the last episode of season 1, the existance of a parallel universe got reveiled, and from then on the whole alterate universe, alternate timeline awesomeness begins. The second half of season 2 through the ending of season 3 is on par with any of the best seasons & mindf*cks of Lost, IMO. Season 4 just ended, which was very good

Do I need to see Alien to understand this movie?

I have never seen the Alien movies. Do I need to see them to understand this movie? Because this looks really good.

Also, LOST was great until the last season. The last season was pure BS, and showed that the writers had no idea where they were going with the show.

I don't think you do in order to understand the movie but they are connected, so you'll be missing something. Besides ALIEN is a classic!!! Please, do go see it.

I haven't watched Alien in years and after seeing the trailer for this and knowing that there is some connection I just had to pay it a visit. I even repurchased it on Blu-ray. Such a cool film. Isn't it funny how Alien and the original star wars still hold up by today's standards but lots of other sci-fi's look terribly outdated.......but yeah definitely go see Alien then Aliens......ok and then Alien 3........but not Alien Resurrection coz it was CRAAAAAP.

I would watch Alien just to get a feel for where they are going with this film. You will see hints of Aliens with a lot of vehicle an set designs.

I love how goofy Fassbender looks in that picture of him with Charlize and Noomi Rapace.

Also, based on the trailer Rapace looks like she's beefed up. She's got some arms on her...

TB: Love everything about LOST. One of the very few shows that can and will be discussed & debated upon for years and years. "Kate's" appearance in MHs yesterday has me planning on starting the series again this weekend.

Also - can't get enough of the Prometheus news! Thanks for the pics.

It's such a beautiful mystery isn't it? It's one of those shows where you think you have it all figured out and that you're theory is just right and then BAM...fuck no, you're all wrong, but are presented with an even cooler possibility.

I've got a fever...and the only solution is more PROMETHEUS pics!

Yes! I love being so incredibly sure of something and then have the rug pulled out from beneath me from another persons theory. This would have never happened if they answered all the questions we had.

I'm hoping (and predicting) that Prometheus will leave us with a hell of a lot more questions than answers by the end. And that fucking rocks, IMO.

This is, like, f*king DEEP man...

Are we sure we'll understand/need all these "weighty" stuff in movies? Won't we be better off with Michael Bay type of scifis where a whole frekking planet emarges just outside of our hemisphare without ANY reparcussions like tidal waves or gravitational pull, but thats okay because it looks soo "COOL"??

Tidbit: THANK YOU!!! Feels like I'm searching my whole life (well since The End atleast) for you with a flashlight, Paul my friend! Most possibly its just the two of us in this whole

We'll run the island together, just like Hurley and Linus. I look forward to the day (uh, month?) when I can sit down and rewatch the whole series. I may have to quit a job or two...

Re-watching the series right now. I have a friend who actually said Lost changed the whole way he thinks about people. Oddly many people told him that he reminded them of Charlie and he hated that.

They've been so cryptic about all of this. I could see the movie ending with the crashing of the space jockeys ship on LV-426 or something totally unrelated to Alien. Either way I'm sure the movie will be a complete pleasure to watch.

I think if Prometheus ends with an "infected" space jockeys ship crashing on LV-426, it would be too close of a prequel by his example, since Alien starts with a distress signal from LV-426 39 years after. but it could be...
