Don't be robophobic in this new trailer for Robocop starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson

Nov. 7, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Well, leave it to Samuel L. Jackson to create a new term for those who are against the ROBOCOP remake. Henceforce, those who are against the remake shall be known as "robophobes" or as simply being "robophobic." I'm joking of course (or am I?), but that's the term ol' Samuel L. drops in this new trailer, which is a much slimmer version than the first one, this new trailer goes more for the concept of the film rather than the story. I suppose that's a trailer's job to an extent, but usually we get some semblance of who the good/bad guys are and what the main conflict is. This is mostly smash 'em up's, which don't look half bad. There will be Internet blood either way, but first take a look.

Are you robobphobic?:

I have to wonder how folks would perceive this film if it didn't have the overpowering weight of Paul Verhoeven's original sitting on its shoulders, because as a standalone film it doesn't look bad, but at the same time, you simply can't take yourself out of the established classic that is the 1987 original. That said, with the cast involved, including Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, and Jay Baruchel, I'm more than a little intrigued to see this puppy play out. Nothing can replace the original model, but I'll be happy to take a test drive on the new one.

ROBOCOP opens on February 12, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: I see on IMDB that Miguel Ferrer is also in the cast as somone named Vallon. Thus far, that's the only castmember from the original that I have heard of. Interesting...

Love the first two original movies, but apart from some odd looking CGI this looks pretty decent. If the social commentary is up to scratch it could be a worthy reboot.

I love Robocop 2. An unappreciated sequel, and absolute genius compared to the third. Robocop 2 tackled some interesting themes and expanded on the first film's narrative pretty well without just being more of the same.

Dick, I am very disappointed.

yeah, this looks awfully generic with forced/terrible social commentary. Trying to emulate Verhoeven's specialty without the graphic violence. No thanks.

From a non-robocop fan

I just recently saw the first Robocop movie a little less then a year ago (I'm 25, so I haven't seen all the 80's movies). I have a friend who is 31 who kept telling to watch it because he loves it and I always heard good things about it, I ended up not enjoying it...it was SO-SO for me (I like 80's movies so I am not anti-80's action flicks). It just wasn't something I liked...with that said...I think this movie looks awful and not because I didn't like the original, awful because it just looks

I can feel for the fans of the original even if I didn't enjoy the original, it doesn't seem to do justice to the original, which is something it should attempt to do for the fans. Other then that, I will still watch it because I am the type of person to give a movie a chance instead of just judging it by trailers.

The original is my favorite movie of all time. I am willing to give this a shot just because I love the idea of the character being on the big screen again so damn much. They blew the original franchise with sub-par sequels. I say why the hell not and this looks promising and fun as hell.

I'm Sold

It looks awesome and I can respect it as its own thing. Because the original was so thoroughly steeped in 80's style, aesthetic and mentality, I think viewing Robocop as our current creative minds envision the future will be an equal or greater treat.

This movie would be better if it were labeled: Robocop : The Next Generation...not so much a sequel but another attempt by the Detriot Police to clean up the streets.
The only credit I will give this movie..is the stars acting in the movie and that the second trailer looks sightly better then the first.
This version lacks the magic the first one did..

Actually, that wasn't bad. Dammit. Now I have hope. Also those who are moaning about too much action - it's the frikkin trailer. For Robocop! Even the original's trailer was action intense. Just gonna have to wait and see....
PS f**k you Michael Keaton - he looks like a turd in black.

Style vs. Substance

I'm not getting a good vibe, but I see a lot of the complaints are about his paint job, or ED-209. Honestly, it's *possible* to have all this stuff look the way it does and still have it be a great movie. I'm way more concerned that the substance of the story, and dark subversive humor isn't there. This honestly feels like a shiny version of the worst parts of Robocop 2, where the good guys=real bad guys had been so oversimplified. This looks way too obvious, and won't have any of the bite. I

I could care less what his suit looks like - and whining for that kind of thing is exactly the type of move that winds up making Studio pander by including "homages" versus making a good movie. ED-209? Totally unnecessary to the story. A million other ways to create whatever conflict those robots will represent. Why is it there? In an attempt to look like the studio is being "faithful" because people whine about the details of style, instead of demanding substance.

I remember in the original version when he he lifted up the mask it really creeped me out. It looked like they seriously took a piece of his head and put it on to a robot. This just looks like a guy in a suit.

Not Impressed

Watched the original just last night and was reminded how much feeling the movie had. You could share Murphy's feelings of agony. Don't see that in this at all. This one looks like 10x the action and special effects, yet inversely proportionate to the ability to draw the audience in.

The trailers show that this has entertainment potential. I can separate the remake from the original. The original will always be there in all it's classic, cheesy, 80's glory. My problems with the Total Recall remake had nothing to do with the original. In fact, for that, I quite liked the action in the film. As long as this one is entertaining, I'll be fine with it. And so far, the trailers are doing a good job of selling that aspect of it. That said, I don't expect this to stand up to the

So Terrible

I see none of the "magic" that made the original great. Get ready for a generic CGI heavy action romp. Some of the lines they deliver are just cringe worthy. And Sam Jackson's costume looks like something from and after Halloween bargain-bin. This one's an easy pass for me.

This trailer is better. I like that they are actually attempting political commentary, since that was an integral part of the first movie for me. At the same time, it doesn't look like much more than a reworking of the Frankenstein story. This movie needs a Clarence Boddicker-type to be the face of why they need a RoboCop in the first place.

This movie is not being made for people who grew up with the original, so how they respond to it is quite irrelevant.

but being part of the audience for the original, I certainly do associate the biting and cynical social commentary of the original as part of the concept of the film, and prefer that over the concept being just another CGI action film. but if that is what today's audience would prefer in the concept, then good for them. this film is for them.

hopefully it is at least

Its not irrelevant, because it is taking an idea or a piece of art which is what the original was and dumbing it down for the younger generation it seems that the media these days are saying that lets put this piece of crap out there because as long as it looks cool they will buy into it. The original raised questions about the soul, society , revenge, corruption and the resurrection and it was almost prophetic in its ideas about where the future was heading. A far more intelligent movie. Not

Not as bad as I thought

Even though the tone of this remake looks significantly different to the original, I am warming up to it now. The speed and acrobatics of the new robocop give it a whole new feel, more modern, more action. I'm happy to go watch it and enjoy it, despite my love for the original.

I think I've already well and truly established my questionable taste for movies credentials on here...so you know what's coming. I enjoyed the trailers (this one more). I don't often recall enjoying modern remakes more than the original (as opposed to older remakes of black and white movies...e.g. The Fly) and that may well happen here again...but this movie does look like something I might enjoy. :o)

Doesn't look good, but

The trailer seems pretty coherent, and is strongly implying that a good portion of the antagonists will be Robocop's creators... juuuuust like the original.

The fact that they are just showing a bunch of explosions, instead of any grit and character, really isn't inspiring confidence. I hate objecting to remakes out of policy (I don't know anybody who actually hates every remake ever made), but it puts pressure on the film not to be another lifeless reinterpretation, or a cash grab. No doubt

No doubt the actor are giving it their best, but this reeks of a something cooked up in a Movie Studio lab to maximize revenue - which really doesn't work most of the time. They're going to have to up their game - I don't just need a cynical take on the union of private corporations, metro government, crime and police. We already had that movie. We need something new that justifies the remake. They aren't showing us anything. "Willing to give it a chance because I can't hold onto 14 dollars" seems like a crappy reason to go see a movie, and short change your self of some better experience you could have had seeing, or doing, something else for that 2 hrs of your life.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic with the first bit there but none of the ppl who made Robocop in the first one were opponents of his. It was the ppl above the creators in OCP who were his opponents and were only so because the main creator made him look like a fool in front of the big boss and kept his project from gaining steam.

OCP is responsible for Robocop's creation. He's designed to monetize law and order. Yeah, if we want to get specific, I'm sure Gary Oldman is the force he's fighting against, just like the scientists looking down over him aren't the bad guys. OCP is the creator of Robocop, and ultimately the system he's fighting against. It's kind of depressing that I have to be that specific.

Security Concepts makes Robocop. They are a subsidiary or something of OCP. The ED-209 fails its demonstration and Bob Morton (the head of Security Concepts) takes his chance in asking for a pitch to the boss which Dick Jones takes exception with. They are two different entities within OCP with Bob creating and Dick trying to destroy.

In these new trailers it just looks like OCP (or whatever they will be called) is 100% the creation and attempted destruction of Robocop. The original conflict

Meh

They are pretty much taking Robocop, taking everything that made it what it was and removing it. It's just another action flick now. Its gone from a robot with human qualities that take over to a guy in a armored suit that pretty much doesn't seem to go through any internal evolution. i mean i don't even see them setting it up like they didn in the original how he was a mystery and every one outside the project assumed Murphy had died. Now everyone knows whats going on and it just contributes

Yes, actually it was, try watching it again.

All the things i say above happen in the movie and part of what made it so great was Weller's ability to convey his anguish and turmoil with nothing but robotic body language and his lower jaw. One of the biggest themes of the movie is the idea of Identity and Murphy's struggle against the programming to find it again.

But i wouldn't expect someone who thinks this reboot is good so far to pick up on that.

The story has a nice level of subtext. But most of it is ruined by how dumb the original robot was. It was slow moving, and goofy. I'm sorry, but I don't see it. Peter Weller is a brilliant actor, but this wasn't his shining moment. The original Robocop is a goofy 80's action movie, nothing more.

The other thing is, you haven't seen it and neither have I. The trailers got me pumped which is what a trailer was supposed to do. Thing two, there are many good actors in it which makes

But I wouldn't expect you to understand that

I think you were thinking of the sequels.

There isn't even really an laughs in the original Robocop, intended or otherwise, so the idea that it was a "goofy 80's action movie" is pretty off base. Yes the movement of Robocop was slow moving but it was also a ROBOT. it wasn't supposed to be some fast run and gun thing like they are doing in the remake. He was a slow methodical force that no one was able to stand against (well... without a small army anyways).

I'm not saying this new one is

I'm not saying this new one is horrible. I'm saying its not Robocop because many of the elements that made it more then just a "goofy 80's action movie" have been removed. I don't need to see the movie to have evidence of this cause it is shown in the trailers. We KNOW that Murphy is this new Robot, it is not hidden at all. We KNOW that he is far more human from the get go and that there is no discovery of what has happened. We KNOW he knows who he is which automatically creates the worst case scenario which makes his creation absolutely senseless.

As to your comment about the actors, if you are claiming that having "good" actors (and they are) is some sort of guarantee of quality of success you've had your head up your ass for the past decade+

This remake is not Robocop, its just another action flick with what seems like minimal substance and is just using a successful name to try and sell itself.

Thnx for comin out.

Because having horrible actors certainly helps a movie! Look, you can go find deeper meanings in Thundercats for all I care, but the original Robocop was a shitty design and a product of 80's cheese. Even ED-209 was done bad. Just so many issues in the original Robocop, sorry. It just wasn't a good movie.

Usually when I hear/read things like what evil eric is saying, its usually somebody born years after the original was made. Its like the one guy I had in alot of my film classes, hes more about today then yesterday, even going so far as to say the same thing about the original Star Wars trilogy compared to the prequels ( He loved them over the originals) Point is I could be wrong about Evil Erics age, but I still disagree with what your saying. it seems as if every remake loses the feeling that

Ah ok, here is the real issue. You just don't like the original Robocop. This isn't a debate on its merits and what is being lost/gained thematically through this remake over the original, which was what my entire original post was about. Funny thing is is there are ppl out there who can see past a movie that was limited by the effects at the time.

ED-209 was done crappy? Are you not aware that it was intended to be crappy? That it was crappy was the ENTIRE reasoning behind OCP making

Or are you, again, referring to the quality of the Stop Motion Animation that was used? You need to get over the fact that some moives were limited by technology of the time otherwise you should say Star Wars sucks cause they had to use physical models in front of a blue screen instead of computer animation.

If all you care about is explosions and guns and top notch CGI, that's fine. But i would have assumed that in reading my original comment, assuming you actually did read it, that you would figure out that just isn't enough to sell some ppl on a remake that there is no need for in the first place.

So that was my bad for that assumption.

To say that the original Robocop wasn't deep, just shows that you didnt understand the movie. I rate it as one of the best Sci Fi movies ever made because of the different levels to the movie. And to say that the design of the cyborg is crappy in the original well it just seems that your happy with anything as long as it is put in Black because they havent done anything revolutionary with the design here and have just altered elements of the original with negative results. The original was a masterpiece and who ever says that it wasn't clearly does not understand the art of movies and its for this reason that shit movies are coming out of hollywood and still making money.

You couldn't be more wrong. The 80's were a weird time to make movies, and Robocop doesn't resonate with me. In facet nothing that Paul Verhoeven has done has really impressed me. His execution is horrible. The only movie that I can say I REALLY like of his is Basic

Nope. The stop motion FX in Star Wars are very fluid compared to ED-209. I do care about how a movie looks in the long run, and Verhoeven fails.

"The original was a masterpiece and who ever says that it wasn't clearly does not understand the art of movies and its for this reason that shit movies are coming out of hollywood and still making money. "

Again, someone else is reaching. I understand that art of movies just as much as the next guy. In the end, Robocop didn't work for me. That's it.

LOL, Stop Motion animation was barely used in the Star Wars movies. It was either relegated to the back ground (At-At's walking by) or looked on par or worse (the chess game) then any of the Stop Motion found in Robocop, In fact the only part that looks spotty is a few shots of the OCP Building fight.

And since you missed it, the Star Wars bit was referring to old tech vs new and not comparing a single tech between the 2 movies. I said you would think the Preequels are better just cause they

I said you would think the Preequels are better just cause they used CGI instead of the older technique used for the original trilogy which was things like static ship models in front of a blue screen. Like how you are pretty much saying that the Stop motion (the older tech which to you is chessy) makes the original Robocop inferior to this new one with updated effects.

Cheap

For the budget constraints that the original had it still looks far better than this cheap looking piece of shit plus its 26 years older. The CGI isn't even that convincing it looks like a straight to DVD movie and that's being kind.

Honestly I prefer the Silver suit at the end of the trailer but I wish the movie would explain why Murphy still have one Human hand.

The original is a classic and is iconic, but I'm willing to give this new film a chance. It has a great cast and I like the sleek look to it. But again so did the new Total Recall and that film kind of sucked. So hopefully this film is better.

And the silver suit looks soooo much better than the black one.
