Exclusive: First poster and new images for the comic adaptation Dredd with Karl Urban arrives!

Jun. 8, 2012by:

Not to be confused with Sylvester Stallone's effort, "Judge Dredd", the new comic adaptation version of the famed British comic book character, DREDD, is coming to theaters this year, courtesy of director Pete Travis (VANTAGE POINT) and star Karl Urban (RED) as the titular character.

And today, we have an exclusive look at the first poster and two new images for the adaptation, which also stars Lena Headey and Oliva Thirlby.

Get judged:

And here's a synopsis:

In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

There's a couple things going for this film; 1) It's an R-rated pic, which the filmmakers have been adament about from the get-go,  2) The script is written by Alex Garland, who wrote the now classic 28 DAYS LATER, and 3) Karl Urban has been a champion for the character and the role, i.e. he's dedicated to what he's putting onscreen.

Now, we could argue the merits of those points all day, but the bottom line is that DREDD feels like it's got its heart in the right place in terms of delivering a faithful adaptation of the violent comic series that began in the 2000AD comic anthology series.  There have been some complaints about the helmet being too big, but I think it's a nitpick.  Looking at the comic, the guy isn't exactly wearing a bicycle helmet.

Judge Dredd creator John Wagner recently attended a screening of the film and had this to say about it:

"I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I’ve had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them – a little quibble at the beginning – have been addressed. And what a lot they’ve added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I’ve not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes.

Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done – true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you’ll let me know what you think when you’ve seen it, but this has my recommendation."

I'm looking forward to seeing a trailer as a lot of the images we've seen so far look pretty promising.  If nothing else, I'm hoping for a solid, bloody, action-packed romp that can topple the "meh" Stallone version.

You can be judge, jury, and executioner when DREDD opens on September 21, 2012. In the meantime, you can follow DREDD on Facebook here and via Twitter @LionsgateMovies.

Extra Tidbit: The Stallone version really isn't that bad, even with Rob Schneider in it. Also, it has a really kick ass score by Alan Silvestri that's worth checking out even more than the movie itself.

Those screenshots are immense and that poster is perfect.

They perfectly covey the fact that this film is a violent action film for adults- not a Marvel kiddie-fest.

Agreed, the old Dredd wasn't all that bad. I can think of way worse things to sit through for 2 hours. Im not "Excited" to see this new one but more looking forward to it. maybe catch it at a matinee or something...That poster is hard as hell though...

As a huge Dredd fan, I am pretty pumped for this film.

I really like that they're trying to capture more of the feel of the comic, rather than try to recreate the visuals exactly, which would look absurd in live action.

I don't mind the look of the Judge's uniforms so much, but I really hope they've got the look of the Mega City right. If it doesn't seem immense, oppressive and insanely built-up then that'll bug me.

That helmet is an essential part of Mega City's war on peripheral vision.

In 3D and Real-D 3D!!!

WTF!!! That is what it says on the poster. So it won't be available in 2D???

Besides, how many types of 3D do you have? Dolby and Real-D and that's it!!! This one won't be in Imax, so why the hell bother putting "in 3D and Real-D 3D"??????

I have such low expectations for this movie that I'll probably have a blast at the theater, you follow me?

For awhile now, I have been saying "Dredd" was going to be the sleeper hit of the year. There has been plenty of time for the director and studio to work out all the bad shit in this movie. Which I am sure includes the overly large helmet fiasco. You can notice in the poster and pictures they tweaked that bit. No matter what we need a trailer.

Close to %50 of the helmet is actually seen so there's no way to know if they tweaked the size of it or not.
And they already filmed some scenes with the giant helmet so I doubt they changed it because they would have to re-film those.

I have been following this movie pretty close for several months. There have been many re-shoots and tweaks. Don't get me wrong, I need to see a trailer to give my overall opinion on if this film will be good. I don't think the helmet will be the downfall of it.

I don't think the helmet will be the downfall of it either, but it does look ridiculous. The makers of the costume and film are morons for thinking the gigantic helmet looks cool. Just saying.

It's only a good poster because.......

because it hides the fact that the helmet is GIGANTIC.

I couldn't agree more and was just going to post the same thing. Everything from the highlighted color pallet to set design reminds of War Zone, which was not a good movie by any means but was kind of perfectly bad.

The Stallone one is a huge guilty pleasure...

But I can't wait for this version. Sounds like they did a great job so it will be worth the wait.

Fuckin' awesome poster!
