First trailer for Antoine Fuqua's Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart

Jan. 22, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The first trailer for the duelling "DIE HARD in the White House" films, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, is here. Starring Gerard Butler as an ex-Secret Service agent who gets caught up in defending against an attack on the White House, which sees the President (Aaron Eckhart) being taken hostage by terrorists. It's the very definition of high-concept and the only thing missing from the trailer is a "Yippie-Ki-Yay, Mr. President" at the end.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) the film also stars Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Dylan McDermott, Melissa Leo, Robert Forster, Angela Bassett, Rick Yune, and, oh yes, Morgan Freeman. It's an impressive cast to what looks like a pretty formulaic actioner, which isn't to say it couldn't be fun. It could be a total blast. It'll be interesting to see how they market the competing project, Roland Emmerich's WHITE HOUSE DOWN, starring Channing Tatum and Jaimie Foxx after this one hits.

Yippie-Ki-Yay, Mr. President:

Here's the synopsis:

When the White House (Secret Service Code: "Olympus") is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning's inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger disaster.

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN hits theaters on March 22, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Of the two projects, which are you more inclined to see?

Ugh

A guilty pleasure maybe. Great cast. Yeah, I'd be ok if this was the synopsis for Die Hard. Butler does suck. I love me some Cole Hauser, where's he been? Hell, I'da given him a shot at the lead over Butler at this point. The CGI blows and totally unbelivable in the post 9/11 era. The best part of the trailer was Ashley Judd getting the boot. Rick Yune is another, where's he been. Come on Fuqua, you're a Pittsburgh kid, get it together...end rant.

Should have been Die Hard 5

I was thinking about a Cracked article that came out a couple days ago that made it so clear that the best Die Hard movies are movies that 1) were not intended as Die Hard movies, but rewritten to be one, and 2) that John McClane is stuck in one location. This definitely should have been rewritten as a Die Hard movie. It wouldn't have been hard to place McClane in the WH - maybe receiving some kind of Presidential medal. As it is, I don't know if this looks as good as it should. I might

Die Hard 3 is easily the best Die Hard next to the original, and he is all over the place in that movie...

@Cochise. Granted, but even then he was limited to NY. Compare that to Die Hard 4. And don't shoot the messenger, I'm just referencing the Cracked article.

Lockout had a budget of what, 20 million? And this has a budget of 80 million... yet the special effects look just as bad, maybe even worse actually.

Pass. This looks terrible. Aside from all the dodgy CGI, none of this screams fun to my eyes and ears.

Sorry, this looks too direct-to-DVD for me. As crazy as it may sound, I'm more looking forward to Roland Emmerich's version. Neither of these movies are destined to be masterpieces, but at least "White House Down" definitely won't skimp on the production, given Roland Emmerich's "pedigree".

Polish it up, and I'm game. Been looking for Gerard to channel his inner Leo.

It looks like a whole lot of fun, and from the cast (Harvey Dent sure has moved up in the world), the title and the director, I have a better feeling about this than White House Down. It honestly looks quite exciting (I wasn't even all that bothered by the sub-par visual effects work as noted by several other schmoes earlier), and Air Force One being one of my all-time favourites, I'd love to see a cool action thriller along those lines.

The United States DIDN'T negotiate with terrorists...

Now it does it all the time. It even gives them F-16 fighters.

And this does indeed look like Die Hard meets Under Seige meets Airforce One. Not that that's a bad thing.

What are you talking about? I'd genuinely like to know. State-funded terrorists? Rebel fighters? Al Qaeda sympathizers? I mean, just so we're on the same page.

Its pretty common knowledge, for those that pay attention, that we gave arms to the Muslim Brotherhood which took down Libya. The MB has many former Al Queda members in its leaderships and we all know Al Queda was behind 9/11 and we have supposed been at war with the last 10 yrs. So our govt gives aid and comfort to the very terrorists that killed 3k people on 9/11.

It's not re-inventing the wheel of action films so hopefully its fun, looks like it could be....and any excuse to see Morgan Freeman as the President again works for me.

I think it looks great and it looks entertaining as hell. Can't wait to see Butler shoot, fight, and kill a bunch of terrorists for 2 hours.

Great cast, good director, bad special effects

the 80 million dollar budget seems to have gone nearly entirely to the names of the cast. The CG work here is just crap for the most part, it looks so corny and fake -- like a direct to video movie or a SyFy movie or something. I can't believe they actually cleared a trailer to be released with the effects looking like that (same thing I wondered for Jack the Giant Slayer). I'm pretty bummed about this now actually, I was looking forward to it...

I was holding out for Vince Flynn's "Transfer of Power" to be made into a movie. But that probably won't happen now.

I'm more inclined toward White House Down simply because I forgot about this movie. Plus I think the other one has just a higher pedigree. Not that either are likely to be more than amusing diversions.

I'm pretty sure they filmed these on the same sound stages and locations at the same time, to save on production costs. And for the 6 people who thumbed you down - why? Is there really a grassroots network of love for this movie? This seems like something I'll catch halfway through when it's on HBO in a year and a half.

Well, White House Down has James Woods in it, who is always fun to watch (even in absolutely horrible movies). Again, though, I'm not super-pumped for either.

This looks like the same generic action movie they've put out a billion times, and adding in a bunch of famous names doesn't guarantee anything. I'll have to pass.

To be fair, this is by far the best remake of the "Under Siege" trailer I've ever seen: [link]

CGI looks like it was made in 1981. They rushed this to get ahead of Emmerich. It'll show up as well in the script and editing. Damn shame given the cast. And that its such a blatant Die Hard knockoff released so soon after an actual Die Hard movie will make it even more white noise.

dont know why you got bashed for this comment. i thought it was spot on. looks like In the Line of Die Hard and is rushed out to get ahead of a better version. and those CGI shots were Syfy channel standard fare at best. hate to see Butler Eckhart and Freeman riding this turd. also, Angela Bassett shows back up for this?? the cast list must have fooled her.

Some of that CGI is inexcusable. I doubt it'll get much better before the release date.

Tidbit...Emmerich cause of the budget and scope.

Other than the half-ass CGI, it does look like fun. I'd totally switch around the casting if I directed this movie. Morgan Freeman would play the seasoned hero, Robert Forster would play the President, Aaron Eckhart and Gerard Butler would play the villains and Rick Yune would play the speaker. How epic would that be?

To change up the formula I think it would be awesome. This looks cheesy enough as it is to me. Still excited to see it though.
