Green Lantern may not show up in the DCCU quite as soon as you hoped

03.03.2016

Once it became clear that Warner Bros. was going to be crafting their own superhero universe with their stable of DC Comic characters, it was important for them to chart the direction those films would take, which included casting characters who wouldn't be seen for several years. Although some will be popping up in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, we already know that Gal Gadot will be playing Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller will be playing The Flash, Jason Momoa will be playing Aquaman, Dwayne Johnson will be playing Black Adam, and Ray Fisher will be playing Cyborg. One major character who has yet to have been cast is Green Lantern, which means that we may not be seeing the character quite as soon as we hoped.

Greg Silverman, the president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros, spoke with Entertainment Weekly for their BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE coverage and let fans know that if they're patient, it will all be worth it.

[Green Lantern] is an incredible character. He’s actually multiple incredible characters, there’s real opportunity there. We didn’t do a great job on that first Green Lantern movie. This is a character who deserves to be treated in the same way that Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman are being treated now, which is with great reverence. I guess I can say to the Green Lantern fans: if they can be patient with us, I think they’ll be really happy.

Unlike a few of the other heroes, Green Lantern won't even be mentioned in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, so when might we finally see DC's Emerald Knight on the big-screen? BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE producer Charles Roven has the answer:

Every beat of the movie is not yet worked out. So there’s the possibility that he may or may not be in Justice League 2. For now, we felt that we were introducing enough characters that the best possible place we could put Green Lantern is some introduction in Justice League 2, or barring that, a movie after.

We're still not sure exactly which Green Lantern will be popping when he first makes his appearance, but it's quite possible that we'll get to see many of our favourites as the Green Lantern-centric film will focus on the Green Lantern Corps themselves, which is the intergalactic military/police force who patrol the farthest reaches of the universe at the behest of a race of immortals residing on the planet Oa, known as The Guardians. As Green Lantern has always been one of my favourite DC heroes, it's a little disappointing that we have a bit of a wait ahead of us, but if the wait is worth it, all the power to them. Just don't make the super-suit animated!

GREEN LANTERN CORPS is set for a June 19, 2020 release.

I don't have a problem with GL sitting out the Justice League movies. The character is so massive that he could easily have a huge franchise of his own similar to X-Men. Also, after the disaster of the first movie, I'm sure DC doesn't want to jump into anything so quickly.

The script that leaked effortlessly included the John Stewart Green Lantern kind of working behind the scenes and I felt it worked great. It seems like they've scrapped that idea and to be honest it's going to feel really odd having a Justice League movie without Green Lantern.

If they're taking their time to get it right, that's fine. You can do Justice League without a Green Lantern, and introduce the Corps whenever the time is right. For a character that has so much potential to be silly, waiting until they've got it right and all the pieces are in place is absolutely the correct way to proceed.

With the success of Supergirl (with Supergirl getting higher ratings than the Flash) I think the correct move would the to put John Stewart and Kyle Rayner on TV and have Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner in the movies. It's about time that the CW shows started acknowledging the existence of the Justice League. There was even that line on Legends of Tomorrow with Rip Hunter saying "I saw Men of Steel fail and Dark Knights fall" which suggests that Vandal Savage was able to defeat the Justice League

It's about time that the CW shows started acknowledging the existence of the Justice League. There was even that line on Legends of Tomorrow with Rip Hunter saying "I saw Men of Steel fail and Dark Knights fall" which suggests that Vandal Savage was able to defeat the Justice League in his timeline. Obviously the Flash is not part of the Justice League on the TV show but they can start name dropping "Clark, Bruce, Diana, Hal, Arthur and Victor" the same way that they keep talking about "Clark" on Supergirl.

The Green Lantern Corps movie could have a whole shipload of Green Lanterns killed and Hal, Guy, John and Kyle each get rings and then the movie becomes a buddy comedy focusing on Hal and Guy in space while John and Kyle have low budget adventures back on Earth. That would seriously be the way I would go. Of course, the CW and the movies do not share continuity and I think you would have to have different people playing John and Kyle on TV and in the movies just to drive home that point. There would be only one person playing Hal and one person playing Guy however and they would not appear on TV and just get mentioned the way Clark is mentioned on Supergirl. I would have Hal in the Justice League movies and have Guy only appear when Hal has adventures with the Corps.

Another approach would be to forego having Hal, Guy, John and Kyle have secret identities and instead the Guardians choose four people from Earth to be the Green Lanterns of Earth. Four is a good number because they want Lanterns to protect their home planets and also have Lanterns protecting Oa. They could have John and Kyle on TV shows lie Legends of Tomorrow or Teen Titans and they can leave the show and come back because Oa wants to have a Lantern from Earth on Oa at all times: normally the Lantern from Earth on Oa will be Guy Gardner but Guy will take a month off every year to go to Rio or Hawaii or Fiji or all three. That's another way to do it.

If he's not in Justice League than DC is basically admitting defeat. There's no way it will be as good as Avengers was because they're leaving out one of there core characters, seemingly just because they're afraid to try again until everything else is accounted for. It would have been like Avenger without Hulk or Thor and it's very disappointing.

Really bummed, I was looking forward to Zack Snyders super dark Green Lantern.

I think Green Lantern would work as a Green Lantern Corps, not just a solo Green Lantern movie.

I'm looking forward to a big screen version of the Justice League and I'll be there opening weekend regardless, and I've come to terms that Martian Manhunter won't be in the lineup, but it's gonna feel a little incomplete without GL. Bruce, Clark, Diana, Hal and Barry for the winning lineup (I guess Arthur too)

This is somewhat disappointing to hear because DC seems to know what they're doing with all of the other Justice League members except Green Lantern. But again, I don't mind waiting (hopefully not too long) to see him on screen for the second time if it means that they're really going to make a real effort this time to deliver the goods.

If anything Green Lantern Corps will be the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' of the DCU. Not quite exactly established from the beginning of the established

If anything Green Lantern Corps will be the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' of the DCU. Not quite exactly established from the beginning of the established shared hero storyline, but eventually shows up later on while accomplishing his own storyline in the meantime. I just hope they cast well for both Jordan, and Stewart if the case is for both of them to show up in the first Green Lantern film of this new DCU.
