Karl Urban still looks really unhappy as Judge Dredd

01.31.2012

He might be the law, but he definitely looks really unhappy to embrace that idea.

Let's see...the only thing from the new JUDGE DREDD, titled DREDD, that we've gotten is photos of Karl Urban in costume and some set photos of futuristic vehicles. Okay, I get the idea. That's a big ass helmet and Dredd's facial expression never changes. Can I see something else please? Like, I don't know, some footage?

The original adaptation of JUDGE DREDD was by no means anything spectacular, but it's entertaining as hell. I'll be honest here-- I really think that this might be just as entertaining due to the writing talents of Alex Garland (28 DAYS LATER, SUNSHINE). The thing that will make or break this is Urban's version of Dredd.

This new photo comes from Total Film's 2012 preview. Click on the photo to read the content.

Synopsis: DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Fuck yeah I'm open to it. Costume is as close as it's possible to get to the comics, so good enough for me. The scowl is pure Dredd in every way, and Urban will probably knock this out of the park. On top of all that, the creator of the character has given his seal of approval along with 2000AD. My only beef at the moment is that there is a serious lack of fucking trailer. Or posters. Or any shots besides scowls and Lawmasters. As excited as I am, I need more. Like, now.

I wonder if Urban would hurt his jaw at the end of the day with all this grumpy Dredd look. Still, the picture looks pretty sweet.

I understand that this was how the helmet was drawn in the comics, but the way the helmet was drawn in the comics looks like it's just right to purposely block his vision. Lame design.

That helmet...

..looks just so awkward. Never read the comics, never saw the original movie. Is that how it is suppose to be?

@mckracken I don't even know how to answer that because it's so ridiculously stupid. Why do I have to read the comic in order to make a personal observation? Are you saying that I need to read Spider-Man in order to say, "Hey, that costume looks silly!" No, I do not. I think Dredd's helmet looks awkward and that's my opinion. I don't need to read the comic in order to state an opinion on the photo from the movie which is posted in this article.
