Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm have Friends With Kids on this poster

01.31.2012

Jon Hamm might have been one of the best parts of BRIDESMAIDS, and he and Kristen Wiig are back in another relationship in FRIENDS WITH KIDS. This time they're playing an actual couple, though.

The film's real stars are Adam Scott ("Parks and Recreation", "Party Down") and Jennifer Westfeldt (KISSING JESSICA STEIN), who see all their other friends having babies and decide to have one themselves, platonically.

Friends With Kids is a daring and poignant ensemble comedy about a close-knit circle of friends at that moment in life when children arrive and everything changes. The last two singles in the group observe the effect that kids have had on their friends' relationships and wonder if there’s a better way. They decide to have a kid together - and date other people.

I'm going to take a wild guess and assume they end up in love by the end, perhaps learning an important lesson about love and family?

The film also stars Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns, and it was written and directed by Hamm's real-life wife Westfeldt.

Chris O'Dowd minus Irish Accent

Ouch. Otherwise everyone but Jennifer Westfeldt makes me want to see it - on DVD or Netflix.

I would only watch this if ...

... I knew that they don't end up together in the end.

Both love Jon Hamm and Adam Scott so I will definitely be checking this film out.

Seriously, Scott is such an underrated actor. Watch the film The Vicious Kind and the television show Party Down to see how great he is.

LOL

"We have room for six people on the poster. Wanna add Megan Fox? She's sexy!"
"Hmm, well we already have guy with a beard no one's ever heard of, and a woman on the far right that looks like a plastic surgeon's mistake. Sorry, no room for Megan."

I caught a screening of this a while back

I knew the marketing department would try to push Wiig, Hamm and the other Bridesmaids stars in the advertisements. The truth is that they are all minor characters (Wiig barely has any lines!). I think even Megan Fox is in the movie more than Wiig is. The stars are Scott and Westfeldt, but there's no chemistry between them whatsoever. I love Scott but his character is poorly written; he tries to do the best he can with it to little success, and Westfeldt (Hamm's girlfriend in real life, hence

I love Scott but his character is poorly written; he tries to do the best he can with it to little success, and Westfeldt (Hamm's girlfriend in real life, hence the Bridesmaids all-star cast being involved) is awful: stiff, lacking charisma, and looking like she's had one too many Botox injections. We're meant to believe she grew up with Scott's character; their dialogue is obvious and corny, like what a student filmmaker might write to try to convey a relationship between two people.

Not an awful movie, but given my love for Scott and some of the supporting actors (who barely offer any support) I was sorely disappointed. The plot alone is just so naive and immature that I can't believe a grown woman conceived of it.
