2013 Walt Disney Movie Preview!

I love this time of year mostly because it's a "fresh start" to the new year in movies. To that end, we'll be presenting all of the top studios' 2013 movie previews right here, including a picture from each film (if a photo is available), its release date, the plot synopsis along with our basic THUMBS UP (we want to see this!), THUMBS DOWN (we do not want to see this!) or QUESTION MARK/NEUTRAL (not sure yet whether I want to see this or not -- wait & see) positions below each entry. Please feel free to leave your comments about each film, and be sure to look below for other 2013 previews that we'll be posting over the first few weeks of January 2013. Last year was a pretty kickass year in movies, so here's hoping that 2013 also brings us some coolness in film. Now here's WALT DISNEY's slate...!

Oz the Great and Powerful - March 8, 2013

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.

With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Monsters University - June 21, 2013

The Lone Ranger - July 3, 2013

Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) and man of the law John Reid (Armie Hammer) are opposites brought together by fate and must join forces to battle greed and corruption.

The Little Mermaid in 3D - September 13, 2013

Swimming into the hearts of a new generation—beautifully restored and this time in 3D—“The Little Mermaid” features the beloved Ariel (voice of Jodi Benson), a fun-loving and mischievous mermaid, who is enchanted with all things human. Disregarding her father’s order to stay away from the world above the sea, she swims to the surface and, in a raging storm, rescues the prince of her dreams. Determined to be human, Ariel strikes a bargain with the devious seawitch Ursula (voice of Pat Carroll), trading her fins and beautiful voice for legs. With her best friend Flounder (voice of Jason Marin), misguided seagull Scuttle (voice of Buddy Hackett) and the calypso-singing Caribbean crab chaperone Sebastian (voice of Samuel E. Wright) at her side, Ariel must win the prince’s love and save her father’s kingdom – all in a heart-pounding race against time. Originally released in 1989, “The Little Mermaid” garnered two Academy Awards®, including Best Original Score (Alan Menken) and Best Original Song (Menken/Howard Ashman, “Under the Sea”). Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who went on to direct “Aladdin” and “The Princess and the Frog,” “The Little Mermaid” returns to the big screen on September 13, 2013, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

In debt to the mob, rejected by his pregnant girlfriend, things couldn’t look worse for David when he is hit with a lawsuit from 142 of the 533 twenty-somethings who want to know the identity of the donor. As David struggles to decide whether or not he should reveal his true identity, he embarks on a journey that leads him to discover not only his true self but the father he could become as well.

Thor: The Dark World - November 8, 2013

Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos...but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Frozen - November 27, 2013

From the studio behind 2010’s “Tangled” and this year’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” Walt Disney Animation Studios presents “Frozen,” the most daring comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen. When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna (voice of Kristen Bell), a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, an amazing and comedic snowman named Olaf, Everest-like conditions and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

Saving Mr. Banks - December 20, 2013

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation. For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

The plot description makes little sense. This is going to be terrible.

I like the plot to this, sound a bit like classic Disney and a bit new-agey. Also seems like the could be going the Viking route with this, and I always welcome more Viking films. Not enough of those.

Was surprised by the first film, but I do hope there's more to this one. The first one felt very underwhelming. Hopefully this is a lot more epic.

I have a bad feeling about this one. The plot already sounds mixed, but I can't help but feel like this is going to be terrible.

I really dislike these attempts to make all these Disney classics into 3D cash grabs. I have absolutely no interest in seeing some of cinema's most beloved animated films turned into post converted, gimmicky cash grabs. No ty, I'll pass. Would rather see the original re-released in theater than this.

I can't outright thumbs down this. No one thought Pirates of the Caribbean would be any good and it turned out great. The trailer doesn't really excite me, but it doesn't have me saying it looks awful. I'll have to wait before I judge this one.

Hanks is taking this role seriously since he's the first man to play Walt in a movie. This might be good...

Wait for dvd. While I found the first movie to be quite mediocre, I do like Thor better than I do Iron Man. The guy's got some cool powers and should have mopped the floor with Iron Man in The Avengers. These movies simply aren't doing him justice. And it seems it will continue, as the next movie doesn't sound very interesting.

I'll wait for it to come out on dvd. I'm tired of Iron Man, tired of Captain America already, and I'm tired of Nick Fury. I didn't like any of these characters growing up and these movies haven't convinced me to like them now. Their lame powers combined could barely take down Thor's brother. So why would I want to watch a stand alone movie of just one of them again? ....Good thing Superman and Wolverine will be out this year.

The trailer of Oz looks like they are playing alot off the original old Wizard of Oz movie.
The Emerald City looks like the old one. Flying monkeys, munchkins.
My main worry is that the trailer has heavy duty full dramatic orchestral music. It has the wrong feel. Like a standard action adventure movie.... yes, like Burton's Alice.

Huge thumbs down

I do like Depp, but i'm getting sick of him doing the same shit over and over and over and over and over and over. Armie Hammer will be interesting to see leading a film like this but I don't think anything will save this movie.

Up

Not much to argue with here. The second film was a disappointment but this one seems to be going in a darker direction. Kingsley as the villain is pretty kick-ass as well.

Question mark for sure. Love Sam Raimi and I'm excited to see what he does here, however, it looks WAY too much like a re-hash of alice in wonderland — which was terrible.
