Margot Robbie talks “pretty impressive” Jared Leto Joker on Suicide Squad

Taking on the mantle of The Joker is no small feat and a role that has left some incredible performances on the table within the Batman franchise. His next big-screen venture comes not in a Batman film, but an anti-hero superhero flick, this time portrayed by Jared Leto. Director David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD will see the return of the "clown prince of crime" as well as his crazy counterpart, Harley Quinn, as played by Margot Robbie, who will be the first big-screen incarnation of the character. Leto's on-set "in-character" antics have been well documented, as has his penchant for staying in character throughout the shoot and Robbie tells NY Daily News that it's "pretty impressive" and that "what he's doing with the character is so cool."

Robbie goes on to talk about her initial reaction to Leto in character, saying: "At first it was kind of confronting (to be up close) but now I'm so used to it, I think if I ever saw him out of makeup now I would be really confused."

She goes on to say that seeing him out of make-up left her "petrified" of him and that she was "too scared to go up and didn't know who that person was, and when he got back into his makeup I was far more comfortable."

Judging by the teases we've seen and with most folks cooling off over his non-standard appearance, Leto's performance is anticipated to be something special, although it's hard to say with any certainty just yet. Robbie elaborates on the overall dynamic of the ensemble SUICIDE SQUAD team, saying:

"I guess the one common denominator is we're all bad guys, it just makes everything more fun that way. The scenes are more interesting I feel, when you just don't know how the characters are going to react, especially with Harley, who's absolutely nuts… she's either going to kill you or laugh and give you a hug."

Pretty cool stuff. I can't say I'm more or less excited for SUICIDE SQUAD over BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but can say that I'm equally excited to see them both, especially given their interconnectivity; it feels like they're part of a larger sum (which I'm guessing is the point) and I'm genuinely excited to see the DC cinematic universe kick off with a bang, especially with a new Joker and first-ever Harley Quinn in the mix. It's a great time to be a comic fan, that's for sure.

SUICIDE SQUAD hits theaters on August 5, 2015 (Just under a year!) and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE lands on March 25, 2016.

"You know you fine, right?"
