Matt Damon addresses Ben Affleck as Batman, and why he doesn't qualify for Robin

08.27.2013

I wonder how many people have gone up to (or yelled at) Matt Damon asking him what he thinks about Ben Affleck playing Batman. Sure, the photoshopped pic of him as Robin is funny (see above), and the ridiculous rumor of him playing Aquaman is also amusing but don't count on seeing them together in a comic team-up.

When Damon spoke with the Times of India, he started by baking his old friend as Bats and even made remarked about the semi-backlash:

"I think it will be great. It will be terrific. I know there are a lot of people grousing on the internet. I just think it's kind of funny. You know, he's not playing King Lear. It's Batman! Certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw Argo or The Town, and all the work he's been doing lately, it's way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult than Batman! Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people. Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that."

The actor laughed about the idea of playing Robin mentioning that someone actually sent him the pic of his head photoshopped on Robin's alongside Affleck as Batman to which he said, "I am a little older than Ben. I never saw Robin as older than Batman. Somebody sent me a picture actually. It was really funny. But it's safe to say I won't be Robin."

On a separate note, Damon talked about Jeremy Renner's turn as Jason Bourne:

"They were just trying to revitalise that franchise and I didn't mind at all. It didn't have anything to do with the movie that I made. It makes sense for a studio to keep those franchises as alive as they can, it makes business sense for them. I don't begrudge anybody that. I am a huge fan of Jeremy. I don't equate my Bourne movie with his. He didn't play the part of Jason Bourne. It's a totally different thing."

Agree with him on Renner and the Bourne revitalization of the franchise. I watched The Bourne Legacy as a completely different movie; just simply as a action thriller.

While I agree that Ben will be great...

Damon continues his ongoing career of demeaning people and fans...I'm sorry, but at this point, Batman is a way more complicated, interesting and relevant character than frakking King Lear. Dude, you're the guy who made the "how do you like 'dem apples" joke and played Robin to George and Brad in the Ocean's movies. Not to mention he goes and makes Elysium while living in frakking Elysium...stop it Matt, just stop it.

You're really gonna argue that Batman is more complicated than King Lear? I am a huge Batman fanboy and have been for a long time, but... come on.

Really?

Bruce Wayne is the more challenging role? Playing a playboy millionaire is more challenging than playing Batman? Its the man under the cowl that we care about, not the man without the cowl.

The playboy persona is also an act. I think he means the REAL Bruce Wayne.

Well, he did just play a 17 year old in Behind the Candelabra, and even then it was more believable than Chris O'Donnell in Batman Forever/Batman and Robin.

Love Matt Damon as an actor...

but I gotta take exception to what he said about Batman. So portraying Batman is no harder than looking good in a suit and cowl, as long as you can speak in a gruff voice and handle the physicality of it? It's a good thing Damon isn't playing Batman, because that's totally the wrong mindset. It would've been easy for Christian Bale to phone in all the Batman parts of the Dark Knight trilogy, but he didn't. Both sides of the Batman/Bruce Wayne character are important, which is why it's so hard

As long as he knows better, then I'm fine.

No

"Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people. Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that."

He doesn't get it. There needs to be some sort of darkness inside of him. Christian Bale is a weirdo, and has that thing inside him. The concept of a man flying around as a bat fighting crime is crazy. Ben Affleck doesn't appear to have that inside of him. He seems like a good guy.

Yes but that's where the acting comes in. Affleck needs to convince us when he's playing Bruce Wayne that he DOES have darkness within him. That was the problem with Alec Baldwin playing the Shadow: he did not quite pull it off and Affleck might not be able to pull off Batman either. We were lucky to have people like Keaton, Kilmer and Bale. (Clooney was just wrong for the part.)

He makes a really great point about playing Batman. As long as he can stay on top of the physicality of the role he will be able to nail the Batman side of the character. The acting requirement is really needed to play the Bruce Wayne side of the character, and he'll be able to nail that in strides!

It's not like they cast Rob Schneider as Batman for fuck's sake. As with 99.9% of movies that haven't been made yet, we have no f'ing idea how it's going to turn out. The exception to the rule being Uwe Boll of course.

They should have Jason Bourne join the Justice League. That way Affleck and Damon could both be in it.

Maybe not Robin, but after seeing him with a shaved head in Elysium, Damon would be an interesting pick for Luthor. Or is that officially Cranston's role already?

Well gang, we've heard from Kevin Smith and Matt Damon on this development. How about other people from Affleck's acting past? Where does Jennifer Lopez stand? What does Jeremy Renner think? How is this effecting Bruce Willis' state of mind? The moment this story starts to look bled dry, they'll release a picture of him in the cowl and it'll start all over again. Warner Bros has made this the official fanboy topic of conversation for the next two years and they are evil geniuses for doing so.
