Matt Damon says he's down to be Bourne again, but only with Paul Greengrass

May. 5, 2014by:

It’s been nearly seven years since Matt Damon played Jason Bourne on the big screen in Paul Greengrass' THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM. The franchise has since gone on without him by casting Jeremy Renner as the lead in 2012’s THE BOURNE LEGACY. The reception was lukewarm at best as trying to fill the shoes Damon fit into perfectly was obviously no easy task.

Well, I expect some heads might turn and some scripts might get started tonight with the reiteration from Damon that he’s willing to return to the franchise, but only with Greengrass on board and with the right screenplay.

He said to CNBC:

"I've always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director. We've just never been able to come up with a story... It felt like such a good way to end it last time. Having said that, I love that character. I'd love to see what happened to him."

Back in November of last year we shared the news that Justin Lin was set to direct the next Bourne installment with Jeremy Renner returning, so I can’t imagine everything coming to a halt to make Damon’s solution for getting him back in the role:"If any of your viewers have a story, please call Universal and submit it."

Personally I love the Bourne movies with Damon; I can’t turn away even when it’s on TV and edited to hell. THE BOURNE LEGACY may not have been the thrill ride we had in the first three movies, but Renner definitely brought it as an action star.  I'd like to see Damon and Greengrass reunite for another story, but let's not dilute the already rich stories laid out with a cash grab.

Do any of you have a great idea for another Bourne with Damon? What would you say to a cross-over flick?

Sure, why not. Matt, Jeremy and Paul. Sounds like a hit.

I seriously thought I read somewhere that Matt didn't want to do them anymore, that it was too tough on him physically or something? Anyway, part one was very enjoyable 2 and 3 were basically shaky cam 101 - I almost turned off the movie because it was so garbage - I think the shaky cam actually ruined a good movie.
Didn't see part 4, if no shaky cam I would give it a shot.

LMAO...

FIRST OFF...you show a clip from the Bourne Identity which just goes to show how great Doug Liman's movie is and how BAD Greengrass' action scenes were...but I don't think you understood what you were doing. SECOND, if Damon will only return with Greengrass I call this a win. Legacy was the best Bourne movie since Identity. Paul Greengrass' style is an abomination and if Damon has attached himself to this pretentious hack, we will all be the better for it. Bye, bye, bye!

Bourne and Greengrass are a dynamic duo. I really hope they would make another.

Sign Damon already, he's only said he'll come back about a hundred times. Make this a split film with Damon and Renner on different missions, but they're connected in a way.

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM!

Just get Greengrass to direct the scenes with Matt in them.

Contact me through here (my Movie Fan Centeral account) Hollywood if you want to send me money for my brilliant idea.

What else is new?

He's been singing this same old song since before Legacy came out.

And here I thought I was going to read something new.

SMH

Oh silly me.

I didn't read the below comments, but I have a feeling I'm prolly repeating this - aren't the films already edited to hell when you are just watching the DVD/Blu-Ray?

Oh nvm. I didn't look and see that my good old pal Paul wrote this. Please ignore my comment, as I should have looked at who wrote the this first, and then gnored the article.

This article is actually written by one of the new JoBlo staff writers, Graham McMorrow, so I don't know why you mention Paul's name here. Also, it's entirely clear what the writer means: movies are edited for time and content when presented on TV, especially on broadcast television, so the original theatrical release is often altered and many times for the worse, which makes "edited to hell" a legitimate description.

This was easily one of my most favorite trilogies of all time....and I still haven't seen The Bourne Legacy yet. I've literally had zero desire to. Despite bringing back Pamela Landy and other bit players from the original Bourne movies, it just seems way too blatant of a cash grab. After hearing how they resort to name-dropping Jason Bourne every 5 minutes certainly helps me stay away as well. I'm not even a fan of Matt Damon coming back, even though he KILLED it as Bourne. His story concluded

His story concluded perfectly in Ultimatum, and each and every further film hurts it.

Every 5 minutes, is a pretty gross exaggeration. I can only recall him coming up in the beginning and briefly in the middle to help explain what's happening to the protagonist. I only say this in case it really is a reason you're staying away! I actually thought it was a good action flick that is best viewed as the start of another trilogy versus adding something to the one that already exists. If you're already convinced that the 4th one will ruin everything without even seeing it yourself,

I'll take more Damon Bourne any day of the week and twice on Sunday....Especially after the mediocrity that was The Bourne Legacy.

I really, really enjoyed Bourne Legacy and was surprised that I did. I was worried it would seem like a straight-to-DVD cash in and I'm sure there are many who feel it is, but I thought it fit into the world nicely and that its existence was justified.

I enjoyed the Bourne trilogy a lot, but a new one would need a good justification; a worthless entry by Damon would feel horrible. TBH, as great of an actor as Damon is, I'm a little fatigued of him. Joking about asking the audience to submit ideas, however playful the intent, just makes me want to roll over. While I found the 4th film a little lacking (but much better than lukewarm), I'd probably still enjoy another entry with just Renner. He deserves a richer storyline and more character

He deserves a richer storyline and more character development, but he brought a nice believability to the franchise that I'd like to see again in better hands. More importantly, Aaron Cross' story is still just beginning; another Jason Bourne-one is like trying to force another chapter at the end of an already-perfect book. I'd definitely be up for a Renner-Damon team up, if it's done well, but only if Damon's presence is not just a self-serving wink back to 2007, and in a way that still adds depth to Renner's character.

Here's my Bourne movie idea: Jeremy Renner's character is forced into action when Matt Damon (played by himself) and his buddy Ben Affleck (played by Vince Vaughn) are held captive at a mob-run Las Vegas casino for counting cards during a high-stakes round of blackjack. The Bourne Double Down. Directed by Doug Liman of 'Swingers' and 'The Bourne Identity' fame. Co-starring Jon Favreau as Casey Affleck.

I just rewatched the Bourne trilogy this past week, and I feel that his story is completed. The trilogy was great and Bourne's story had a satisfying conclusion with Ultimatum. I'd hate for this to be another franchise that goes one film too many and ends up ruining the series (like Indy, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.).

I enjoyed the first one and think the sequel that Lin is directing will be much better. That said, I would love to see a crossover film with the two characters.

I think Doug Liman's Bourne Identity was the best and it wasn't filmed entirely with shaky cam.

Personally I liked the 4th one. Its not too often we see the fallout from events in a movie and see how it affects that universe
