Megan Fox and John C. Reilly join Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator

Jun. 22, 2011by: Paul Tassi

It's kind of nice to see Sacha Baron Cohen move away from the faux-documentary style he popularized and focus on starring in a truly fictional film where he can showcase his acting talents, which extend far beyond making people feel awkward in real life.

We've talked a bit about THE DICTATOR before here, which is a comedy adapted from a book Sadaam Hussein personally wrote. Cohen will play both a despot and a farmer lookalike hired to replace him when he goes to America and is smitten with a shopkeeper (Anna Farris).

The film needs more players it seems however, as John C. Reilly and Megan Fox have just been added to the cast in unspecified roles. Reilly is of course always great, but Fox? Her star has been falling fast as of late, booted out of the TRANSFORMERS series, apparently at the behest of Steven Spielberg (he said Bay shouldn't put up with her calling him Hitler in public), and her last film was the abhorrent PASSION PLAY that even star Mickey Rourke couldn't stand.

I'm not quite sure why there's so much hate for Fox as an actress. As a person? She tries to play the victim a lot, which is annoying and it's hard to read interviews with her without cringing, but I don't really blame her for not being able to do much with a Michael Bay script. I actually liked JENNIFER'S BODY, and really, she's just too hot not to be given a chance in Hollywood. She does need to stop talking to the press though.

Extra Tidbit: Oh right, JONAH HEX. Well that movie also made even Josh Brolin look like shit, so really no one escaped unscathed.

They're making merciless fun of Saddam Hussein and his atrocious, self-aggrandizing horseshit book. Did you think Charlie Chaplin was glorifying Hitler with 'The Great Dictator?'

?

Am I the only one who is offended that they are making a movie based on something that Sadaam Hussein wrote?
I feel like we are glorifying him.
Thats my opinion.

Tassi the contrarian strikes again

I think the most appealing thing about Megan Fox IS the fact that she runs her mouth. She's self-deprecating in interviews, isn't afraid to make fun of herself, and tells it like it is. When she was being hyped as the next big sex object in 2009 (she was everywhere when Transformers 2 came out), she could have remained a typically dull Hollywood starlet, but instead made some interviews pretty damn interesting. And it nearly cost her the future of her career. All through this, she's been in a

And it nearly cost her the future of her career. All through this, she's been in a steady relationship and not really conformed to typical Hollywood guidelines for up-and-coming actresses (I mean, who calls out Michael Bay?). I dig that she doesn't give a shit, that she isn't afraid to poke fun at herself, and that she comes across as being fairly articulate and witty -- or at least self-aware -- in her interviews. In my opinion, the interviews are far and away the most interesting thing about her, because she has yet to prove she's much of an actress. But maybe this film will change that.

don't really ger what you are saying... he wrote "move away from the faux-documentary style".
Are you saying that Ali G was a "truly fictional film" and not in that documentary style? If so.. you're wrong. If not, what are you saying?

Ali G Indahouse wasn't in the documentary style, Creasy. The movie where he get's elected to parliament? Pretty sure that those were all actors who were in on the joke. Unless Michael Gambon took a break from acting and really was Prime minister of England at some point.

At the same time - Paul didn't say those were his first movies.

Creasy, are you serious? Have you even seen Ali G? It, in no way even remotely resembles a documentary. It's just a straight up comedy.

I like the casting

I actually think Fox is more interesting than many of the actresses working today. I'd rather listen to one of her interviews than an actress that just keeps to a script, and she doesn't get in the press for drugs and alcohol. She may not be able to control her tongue, but at least she handles her shit.

I have bigger concerns than Fox

The Ali-G movie is pretty fucking horrible, and that was his character, but set in pure fiction. Here's hoping the last 2 movies have distanced him from that. Loved the Ali-G show, did not like the movie.

People need to lay off her. She's been through a lot and it isn't her fault that Passion Play or Jonah Hex sucked.
Oh, and John C. Reilly is a plus as well.

I can see her now as the whorrish daughter or wife or whatever of the despot. If that's the case, good choice (the "whorrish" aspect could just be attributed to her being cast). I actually think she deserves more chance to prove herself. She's not nearly as much of a "bad girl" celebrity as some who've been around twice as long. I halfway expect her to retire before Hollywood's through with her.

I actually love the casting on both accounts I should add. A good left-of-center comedy like this might be just what Megan needs to refurbish her image, and any comedy with John C. Reilly is instantly funnier for it.

Because in both life and on film, she comes off as a Heather, that 'in-crowd' girl from high school who never gave any of us the time of day.
