First Look: Meryl Streep looks creepy as hell in this photo from Into the Woods

I know I've said this before but every single time I read something on INTO THE WOODS, my head immediately goes to the song from Nick Cave's former band, The Birthday Party. Too bad they won't add that song to the musical. I can see Meryl Streep singing it as this creepy witch.

How creepy? The first photo of the actress in character popped up thanks to Entertainment Weekly. She looks like she could easily be in a horror movie.

The story centers on "a childless baker and his wife who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch (Streep) that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalks Jack, Little Red Riding Hood and other classic fairy tale characters."

Chris Pine, Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Lucy Punch, Christine Baranski, and many more are set to star alongside Streep in Rob Marshall's adaptation.

INTO THE WOODS will release on December 25, 2014.

It looks good. While I'm frankly surprised she isn't more made-up, with prosthetics and whatnot (though we shall see after post-production), it makes a bit of sense, as with this look Streep's face and eyes aren't restricted, and she will give us a more complex ugly Witch. However, as perfect in everything Streep is, I still believe Catherine Zeta-Jones or Charlize Theron (if she could sing it) are more appropriate choices.
Though certainly, no one can ever make us forget Bernadette Peters....

The cast for this sounds awesome, and I'm all for more big-screen Sondheim adaptations. There's lots of opportunity for cool, almost-trippy visuals with the hyper fairy tale setting. Looking forward to it!

This is the first musical in YEARS I've been excited for. I adore the broadway show, and it's definitely one of my favourites :)

Love a good musical (Grease and Sweeney Todd are two of my favorite films) and the cast is great. Keeping an eye out for this one.

I don't consider myself a fan of musicals but...

I remember seeing a family friend of mine play Cinderella in this when I was a kid. So I am down for it to see how it is adapted.
