NBC's Hannibal finds its Dr. Lecter

Jun. 4, 2012by: Alex Maidy

NBC has high hopes for it's new series HANNIBAL. The low-rated network desperately needs a hit show and if HANNIBAL is cast correctly, this could be their new flagship. Of course, everyone thought THE PLAYBOY CLUB, AWAKE, THE FIRM, or PRIME SUSPECT would be hits and they all got cancelled earlier this year.

In what I think is a brilliant choice, the new version of Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter will be played by Mads Mikkelsen. Mikkelsen is most widely recognized as Le Chiffre in CASINO ROYALE but has also starred in the excellent PUSHER films and the upcoming THOR 2.

Mikkelsen will join Hugh Dancy in the series which will follow FBI agent Will Graham as he and Lecter solve crimes leading up to the events depicted in RED DRAGON. NBC has already ordered thirteen episodes of the series, which is being run by Bryan Fuller.

Fuller described the relationship between the characters: “There is a cheery disposition to our Hannibal. He’s not being telegraphed as a villain. If the audience didn’t know who he was, they wouldn’t see him coming. What we have is Alfred Hitchcock’s principle of suspense — show the audience the bomb under the table and let them sweat when it’s going to go boom. So the audience knows who Hannibal is so we don’t have to overplay his villainy. We get to subvert his legacy and give the audience twists and turns.”

What do you think of the casting of Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter?

MASH, Buffy, Stargate, The Odd Couple, Friday Night Lights, Sarah Connor Chronicles (cancelled admittedly but apparently it was good...), hell, even Weird Science got a bunch of seasons...

This definitely makes me want to tune in and for the record, NBC should have cancelled The Office and kept Awake because at least Awake was interesting and had potential for new ideas. The Office hasn't been good for many seasons now.

"THE PLAYBOY CLUB, AWAKE, THE FIRM, or PRIME SUSPECT " Actually, I thought all of those shows looked down-right awful, particularly "Awake." A Hannibal show could be cool though; I'll reserve judgment til I see some footage.

I love Mads and glad he's getting exposed to American audiences. He thrives when playing baddies...he killed it in Casino Royale.

I was in no way excited for this series, and I'm still not over the moon about it, but this is fucking brilliant casting. Awesome.

Great casting, even though I still believe this show should be on HBO/AMC/Starz. I don't think the Hannibal franchise should be watered-down for the TV-14 crowd.

F'ing ingenious casting.

DEFINITELY tuning in to the premiere now. No question. As for sitting through the rest of the season, well...I'll just see how the premiere goes first.

Great casting. Hopefully they'll wait for an audience to be built and not expect it to be a smash hit from the get-go. I mean come on.. just as a silly example, Seinfeld wasn't much the first seasons around.

I love The MADS...

But I'll contain my excitement till it renew for a second season....And with the "excellent" track record of NBC, I'll always be a skeptic (specially after the heartache from AWAKE).

Have to say though, they couldn't find a better Hannibal.

This is actually the first time I'm genuinely excited for this series. Mikkelsen is a fantastic actor who can bring his own thing to the role, like Cox and Hopkins.

Whoa

This might be some of the most inspired casting I've witnessed in a while. And I definitely appreciate the use of the "Hitchcock Bomb" analogy. There may yet be a modicum of hope for this series yet...
