Neal Purvis & Robert Wade may return for Bond 25; Craig still deciding

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

When in doubt, stick with what you know. That’s my motto, and it’s why I will always go with chicken nuggets instead of the funny looking beef at the gyro shop next door. It smells dope, but I don’t know what’s in it! Anyway, it seems like the producers of the 007 franchise think much like me, as a new report states they’ve approached series vets Robert Wade and Neal Purvis too continue their writing duties for the next installment.

News comes from The Daily Mail that the two writers could be returning to the franchise after almost sitting out SPECTRE, before Craig insisted they return to work with John Logan. There is no confirmation yet from the studio or the writers, but the duo has been with the series since THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.  As for the return of Daniel Craig, the report claims the actor is still deciding whether or not to join, but is apparently “keener to do it than not.” But if he fails to return, we can still think about Tom Hardy.

Though they haven't confirmed they've officially signed on for the gig, the duo did speak with The Telegraph back in February (via Variety) regarding what a sequel would be like, and Wade put forth that the villain has, in a way, already become a reality.

I’m just not sure how you would go about writing a James Bond film now. Each time, you’ve got to say something about Bond’s place in the world, which is Britain’s place in the world. But things are moving so quickly now, that becomes tricky. With people like Trump, the Bond villain has become a reality. So when they do another one, it will be interesting to see how they deal with the fact that the world has become a fantasy.

SPECTRE wasn't great, but it could've been had it just been a bit leaner, and with more Blofeld (Christoph Waltz). Purvis and Wade have been with the series so long that I have faith they could come up with a focused, great new Bond fit for the state of things. That being said, if we keep waiting to hear something from Craig regarding a full-on commitment the world may not even still be around. It's getting to the point where Craig could literally save the world be playing James Bond.

Until then catch Craig in LOGAN LUCKY on August 18.
