New Ghostbusters remake details; roles for Bill Murray & Peter Dinklage?

01.28.2015

Ghostbusters Paul Feig Kristen Wiig Melissa McCarthy Bill Murray Peter Dinklage Banner

Now that we know for sure which actresses will star in the all-female GHOSTBUSTERS remake, HitFix has decided to unveil some plot and character details about the Paul Feig film. Although I say "possible," the site did remove a few things "after several hours of being slimed repeatedly and being picked up and flown around upside down," by Sony, so it does look like this info is legit.

Kristen Wiig is playing Erin Garber, a published author on the subject of the paranormal. Erin now works for Columbia University.

Leslie Jones is playing Abby Bergman, who co-authored the book with Garber. Since publication, the two former colleagues had a falling out and went their separate ways. Abby more actively chases ghost a la Ghost Hunters. This tension between academic investigation (Wiig's character) and mainstream media investigation (Jones' character) is central to the story.

Kate McKinnon is playing Abby Berman's new partner, Jillian.

Melissa McCarthy is playing Patty, an NYC subway worker who stumbles across the main, supernatural threat in the film.

HitFlix also believes Bill Murray and Peter Dinklage are being eyed for roles in the remake. Apparently Sony wants Murray to play Martin Heiss, "a man who is a professional supernatural debunker who is out to prove that the Ghostbusters are frauds." As for Dinklage, the studio wants him to play the main villain, "a creepy mechanical genius." HitFix goes on to say, "there's another role that, if they cast who they want, is going to be the most interesting part of the film."

Although Sony couldn't convince Bill Murray to do GHOSTBUSTERS 3 (or at least a soft reboot), I wouldn't be surprised if Murray does end up taking the Martin Heiss role. But I have a feeling even if the studio does land Murray and Dinklage for the remake, there's still going to be plenty GHOSTBUSTERS fans who aren't happy about the plans for the film. I'm still not sold on Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS, however I am willing to give it a chance. Do you feel better or worse about the remake after checking out these new details on the project?

GHOSTBUSTERS is set to hit theaters on July 22, 2016.

So are you saying fans are only allowed to say nice things? They aren't allowed to disagree with certain projects? Duly noted, I am sure as fuck glad you are not the President, because you'd turn it in to a dictatorship.

And by the way, this isn't a TMZ comment section, I see most of your posts are just direct attacks on other commenters. Respect others opinions in a civil manner or go to another forum. It's almost like neo-feminism, you can't stand opposing opinions.

Why bring Murray back if hes not going to play Peter Venkman? I mean this is considered a reboot but why? The characters all are different genders and names so your better off atleast trying to call it a sequel/reboot. This movie is getting worse and worse more I hear about it and Peter Dinklage is not going to save it.

Leslie Jones is not funny at all. She ruins every sketch she's in on SNL. The rest of the cast looks ok but this will prob suck.

Absolutely no interest in this at all now. Peter Dinklidge can and, and always has done better than this tripe. If Murray does do this then it is only for vanity purposes and no respect for those who were trying to do this film with him in the past. Including Harold Ramis.

I'm more interested than I was. I know Murray was in favor of an all-female Ghostbusters, so for him to return would be very cool. Still not super pumped. I like that the outsider role is not the black woman, but don't like that it is Melissa McCarthy, because it's playing to type.

Nope

Bill Murray needs to return AS HIS ORIGINAL CHARACTER to tie this to the original movie.

So much for it just being a female-led sequel, now it's just a goddamn remake.
Fuck it.

It's been confirmed for a while that this is a complete reboot. Fiege has said that there are no ties whatsoever to the original films, other than little nods here and there.

Forgive my ignorance, I stopped keeping up with Ghostbusters news after Feig officially signed on. But even before then, I swear it had always been a sequel-remake. But ehh whatever.

Still keeping an open mind here

Ok, so GB spiced up with a little Scooby Doo gag, eh? This will be a perfect way for Bill Murray to vent his frustation out that's accumulated over the years on this whole debacle: Think Jon Favreau using cooking as a blatant metaphor for film-making in Chef.

I can already hear the memorable quotes from Mr. Murray....

The whole Male vs Female Stuff

I am the only one who doesn't give a shit that its a female cast? This is just a bad idea simply because its a lazy money grab. If this was a good enough script or production, they wouldn't need to hi-jack the GB franchise to sell tickets. Fuck, enough movies have tried similar stuff to GB, try something new. With the exception of McCarthy who just plays the same character over and over, I actually really like all the women here. If they had cast Rogen, Franco, Hill, and Craig Robinson I would

Have some respect for a comic genius and let this shit rest with Ramis.

Some of you people should be ashamed of yourselves. First folks complaining about Wonder Woman casting because she wasn't busty enough, now i'm seeing some downright sexist comments in here over the last few days. Some people here kept it clean but still.. how is having an all male Ghostbusters movie completely fine, but an all female casting crosses the line? Its funny, the majority of people on this site is usually anti-PC, but all of that went out the window in hopes of males being part of

You give me Emma Stone, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Lawrence, Gabrielle Union, Zoe Saldana, Christina Hendricks... people like that, im still interested... you give me the worst thing on one of the worst runs of SNL (Jones)... a person who plays 1 character a million times over (McKinnan)... a woman who could be good, but has a history with this writer/ director that foreshadows lame jokes about weight (McCarthy) and a woman who may be good but like McKinnan is very 1 note... ya, it has nothing to do

So they can't make the sequel to Ghostbusters that everyone wants because Bill Murray won't sign on. So they develop this piece of shit and now there's a chance Bill Murray is going to sign on? Such bullshit.

He builds a giant mechanical spider, doesn't he? It won't end well. For anyone.

My problem is with Leslie Jones... she has been the very worst addition to SNL ever. All she does us annoying, loud characters... she is 1 note.. and now that single note is going to be on display in a Ghostbusters movie. McKinnan is a good performer, but her characters are nearly all the same, weird accents and exaggerated facial expressions. McCarthy is talented but the fact that the writers of this movie seem to be extremely unoriginal, and now knowing her role, she will play a dirty fat

Wiig can play various roles, but im still not a big fan.. every character she did was the same variation of "hey look at me, im weird and kooky.. right!!"

I hope this movie does not spawn a series... i hope it tanks

It should be changed to "out to prove that Paul Feig is a fraud".

Film sounds awful in every possible way.

For me there's two ways to go with this film - keep continuity or do a complete reboot where you forget the original.

The only reason you'd do a clear cut reboot is if you wanted to recast those original characters (I could've seen someone like Vince Vaughn doing well as either Venkmsn or Ray). Hell you could've even 'done a Starbuck' and mixed it up with a female Egon character. Not saying that's a good idea but it's a good enough reason to get original stars back as new characters.

But this all female cast shouts 'next generation' and I think the only reason an original cast member should appear is to 'pass the torch'. In character. Keeping continuity.

My opinion (echoing what I said earlier)
1. If you cast Murray cast him as Venkman.
2. Don't cast Murray, cast Aykroyd as Ray.

Bill Murray could have been in the movie long long time ago. It'd be hypocritical of him if he accepts the role now. And I can't imagine how loud Melissa McCarthy will make her NYC worker character sounds.

If they are seriously courting Bill Murray...

it's b/c his character must be mysterious, then be revealed as Venkman later in the movie. Has to be. ...if not, they're just being ridiculous to run it in our faces at this point

Well there's not much to go on as far as a synopsis yet, but it does sound interesting. If they end up casting Murray and Dinklage that would be awesome. Murray picks the films he works on carefully, so if he joins then the role he plays and the script must be pretty good.

IMHO - if you're going to give a role to any of the originals give it to Aykroyd, the guys been championing a 3rd film for so long it'd be a slap in the face for Murray to take s role considering he's they one that stopped a straightforward sequel from happening

Bill Murray not playing Venkman? Fuck this shit...If Bill is in the film and he's any other character it will be even dumber as it already will be...So they're completely rebooting like none of the original events happened?...If they're not then won't it be dumb because the Martin Heiss character will look exactly like Venkman? WTF what a cluster fuck of a project...Sorry for Ranting but Jesus Christ this is dumb.

and having Murray play basically a villain in the movie is a total kick in the balls to fans of the original. Please let this ship go down without Murray on board.

Hmm, I smell a rat here

Having Bill Murray return as Dr. Peter Venkman would be a no-brainer for a franchise that's trying to reboot after 30 years. He could act as the elder sensei to the new generation of Ghost Busters. That would make more sense from a commercial standpoint than having him play an antagonist. Especially since he'd likely steal every scene.
