New York Film Critics Circle Awards name Zero Dark Thirty as Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor

12.03.2012

The New York Film Critics Circle Awards have been announced which means we have our first look at who will be in the running for the Academy Awards in February. While many of these are unsurprising, it does remain to be seen how closely the Oscars will mimic this list.

Best Movie: ZERO DARK THIRTY

Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, LINCOLN

Best Actress: Rachel Weisz, THE DEEP BLUE SEA

Best Supporting Actress: Sally Field, LINCOLN

Best Supporting Actor: Matthew McConaughey, BERNI/MAGIC MIKE

Best Director: Kathryn Bigalow, ZERO DARK THIRTY

Best Screenplay: Tony Kushner, LINCOLN

Best Cinematographer: Greig Fraser, ZERO DARK THIRTY

Best Animated Film: FRANKENWEENIE

Best Foreign Film: AMOUR

Best Documentary: THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE

Best First Film: HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE

LINCOLN winning acting awards while ZERO DARK THIRTY takes directing and film seems to be on par with how those films have been reviewed to date. They also seem like the safe bets, which is what movie fans have been railing at the Academy for going with year in and year out. If these winners hold true for the Oscars, this will once again be one of the whitest group of winners in years.

While this list does not include all of the possible nominees, you would have to assume ARGO, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, HITCHCOCK, LES MISERABLES, DJANGO UNCHAINED, THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, and LIFE OF PI were in the running as well.

I don't disagree with these nominees, but I also didn't think THE HURT LOCKER was Best Picture a few years ago. I will reserve judgement until I have seen ZERO DARK THIRTY.

Only war films that make America look like the best country in the world. That's why when a masterpiece like Apocalypse Now comes out... Kramer vs. Kramer wins Best Picture instead.

Zero dark 30 won't win.. It's like giving hurt locker another award! I'm sure it's a fine film, but c'mon! Been there done it w/ the hurt locker. And NO WAY IN HELL Lincoln wins screenplay! Tarantino will take that prize home. And Leo Dicapprio is gonna win supporting! From everything I hear Lincoln fucking sucked! Boring performance piece. Usually that's what'll win u the Oscar gold, but aside from day Lewis I doubt this movie will win much of anything. I just don't see the academy giving 0

While I agree with you. I think you're forgetting this is our big, "WE KILLED OSAMA!" propaganda piece. They'll give it the gold just because Osama dies at the end.

AMERICA! FUCK YEAHHH.

Taratino Dork

I sat through Magic Mike and it was a big surprise. Not because I was scared of liking a film about male strippers, I will sit through anything with a good story and I am an adult, but Soderberg is very hit or miss. I hated "Haywire" so I was afraid about Magic Mike. You can tell that Tatum's influence on the story based on his past was very essential to making this film work. It just very true and real. McConaughey, in my opinion, was good, but not amazing. I have seen better

I'm not quite sure how safe Zero Dark Thirty is. Silver Linings would have been safe. Les Miserables would have been safe. Zero Dark seems a bit edgier, bolder, and sexier to me. And really... to call Daniel Day-Lewis safe would be fine if he wasn't so incredible.

Hey, sometimes the safe bet is also the right one. I'd be truly shocked if anyone unseated Daniel Day Lewis as Best Actor.

The one big surprise from that list has to be McConaughey for Magic Mike....do I dare check this movie out now?
