Page is Jane Eyre

05.07.2008

Ellen Page is set to play Jane Eyre in an adaptation of the classic book by Charlotte Bronte. In case like me, you failed English literature at school, it's the story of a mousy governess who softens the heart of her surly employer Mr. Rochester, only to discover that he's hiding a terrible secret.

On the upside, Jane Eyre is one of the most acclaimed novels of all time, and Ellen Page is pretty damn good too. But on the downside, unless in this version, halfway through the second act the Green Lantern rides through the English countryside on a tricycle with Martin Luther King and Hitler, I'm pretty sure we've seen this movie before. As Variety itself says, the novel has already been made into a film or TV series 20 times. 20 times! Do we seriously need another one of these things?
Extra Tidbit: Page's real name is Ellen Philpotts-Page. Yeah, doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Studboi - Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre, the movie your thinking of is Pride and Prejudice, an adaptation of a Jane Austen novel.

That being said.. I think this will be a boring movie based on a crappy book.

Reader, I just wet myself.

We don't need another adaptation of Bronte's text, period. To date, there have been twenty created in some fashion--for televison or the big screen (not counting the debacle that was The Wide Sargasso Sea).

The Toby Stephens version was the best by far, and it was pretty faithful to the text, though that's not really the point of an adaptation (hence the use of the word as opposed to 'transcription').

Page is not right at all for the role, whether she is mousy or not. She is neither a period actress nor someone who will do well with the later "religious" stages of Jane's story arc, imo. Heck, Page is not at all right for many roles, but when it comes to thinking of her in a Bronte adaptation, what a chuckle I get.

I say put Page in the "red room" and never let her out!

Not that I'm the connosieur in Jane Austen material, but wasn't there a Jane Eyre movie like three years ago, starring Keira Knightly???

We've seen it before . . .

But no film has done the book justice by staying faithful to the story. If this movie can do that, then it is worth it.

I think Ellen Page is good for this role. She is cute, but she isn't extraordinarily hot, which works because Jane Eyre is described as being plain in appearance in the book. She also is good with sharp dialogue, and Jane Eyre has some entertaining exchanges with Rochester, the romantic interest.

For those who don't understand, I am an English major and so I read this book for one of my classes. I also know someone who loves the book, so I have heard responses to those aforementioned adaptations. Believe me when I write that, if this stays true to the book, this could be the movie that Bronte enthusiasts have been waiting for.
