So apparently the "three" in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3 is hours, as in how many hours the final installment in the franchise is going to be. Filmjerk is reporting that AT WORLD'S END, which opens Memorial Day weekend, will clock in at 170 minutes, just shy of three hours (2 hours and 50 minutes to be exact). Holy. Freakin. Mackeral. That is one long movie. Have studios learned nothing from GRINDHOUSE and the hindsight that the movie was too long? Of course DEAD MAN'S CHEST wasn't exactly brisk at 150 minutes. Hopefully the third and last film won't suffer from RETURN OF THE KING-itis where the ending won't ever end. Now I guess the trick is on me cause I'll be the theater checking this film out no matter how long it is. I just wish they'd trim these things down and leave something for the DVD. Doesn't anyone else get fidgety after 170 minutes in a movie theater chair with the guy in front of you backing his seat into your knees? I'm the only one???

What's the big deal?
It seems a lot of people have a problem with a film's running length these days. As long as the film is intriguing and has a rock solid story, the running length shouldn't matter one bit. "Return of the King" was well over three hours long, and it felt like nothing. The same goes for "Grindhouse" (which failed at the box-office mostly because of its Easter release and the fact that mainstream movie-goers didn't understand its concept). The 170-minute running time of "At World's End" doesn't bother me. As a big fan of the first two films, both of which were lengthy, I have a feeling time will fly by watching the third installment.

By the way, I completely agree with the schmoe below who said that it's unfair to compare the "Pirates" films with "Grindhouse." It IS two different ballparks. Honestly, POTC: AWE could be over three hours long, and I still think it would be a box-office smash. So I doubt a running time of 170 minutes will hurt it.

Im not a huge fan of the "Pirates" movies... The first one was good enough, but the second just seemed to just take the same equation and multiply all of the things people liked to the point of absurdity.

I do, however, like long movies... so I'm hip to this news.

Driectors don't and shouldn't care
Who gives a damn if ppl get "shifty" and don't see the movie cause it's to long. Most good directors don't make movies for the masses, they make movies cause the like doing it. And Grindhouse and Pirates are completely different ballparks, not even fair to judge how well will do based on the other. Pirates 2 was 20 minutes shorter and made bank, so I think they'll be alright.

WELL . . .
The first two movies both suffered from being too long, especially DMC, however, DMC left a lot of loose ends so this one might actually need the long running time. We will see.

If the flick is good enough to hold you through 3 hrs. then it's fine.

However, I doubt Pirates 3 is that stellar.

This is really sad. Do you honestly think Grindhouse was a bomb simply because of the run time? There are multiple factors thay went into it, one of them being outside of the fanboys people just didn't care about it.

Can't say this is too surprising. Or disappointing. Just the opposite, in fact. Bring on the extensive piratey goodness!

I'll take it.

I'm a huge fan of this series and writers Rossio and Elliot. I'll be happy to see the last installment get full treatment. If the pacing sucks, then that's no good...but with Verbinski in the director's seat and Rossio/Elliot penning this thing, I'm betting it'll have me engaged throughout.

RETURN OF THE KING-itis
That actually sounds like a new fantasy pic when you say it out loud. Return of the King Itis!!! Disregarding POTC, wasn't the point of Grindhouse to simulate going to a grindhouse back in the day? Having done that, and remembering the good ole' days of double features at the drive-thru is it possible that the attention spans are weakening, not the movies.

I WITH YA MIKE
At least I know I'm not the only one who thinks this thing is wayyyyyyyy too long. I'm sorry, I CAN hold out 3 hours for Oscar worthy films (LOTR, Schindler's List, Munich, Lawrence of Arabia, etc) but I CAN'T hold out that long for a summer block buster sequel where the previous weak-points were story.

3 hours is nothing. If they have to tell the story in 3 hours, then so be it! The more the better.

Just bring a cup to pee in
I think I read somewhere that the original cut of At World's End was close to 4 hours. So you might still get your extra hour of deleted scenes on the DVD.

Get Over It!
Will people get off the "movies nowadays are too long" bandwagon. Jeez, don't go to the movies. For me, when I pay $8 for a movie and $10 for popcorn and a drink, I like to feel like I'm getting my money's worth by watching a long movie. You're watching a form of art, who are we to say how long a movie should be?

I'm Used to It
I think that the 3 hour running time is awesome. When you have a series like Pirates, it works. It keeps the audience going and keeps them interested. If you have films like Alexander where it was ridiculously long and boring then it does not work. You feel like you waste your time. Pirates is different and I think it actually helps the film because it closes the whole story and you have...

Three hours isn't bad. As long as the plot isn't as muddled as DMC. And length has nothing to do with Grindhouse bombing... people just aren't all that interested. The two most money making films in the world are close to and above 3 hours after all.

No Problem for me...
There is no problem for me to sit 3 hours in the Cinema. The seats are not small here in germany... so there is no guy in front of me who will backing his seat into my knees. Instead of that, there are enough bollywood movies that are longer than this. So Germany is open minded for this kind of movies. :-) And we just canīt wait to see Grindhouse here, in the hopefully longer cut than USA.
