Review: 300: Rise of an Empire

300: Rise of an Empire
03.06.2014
4 10

PLOT: While the 300 Spartans face Persian ruler Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) at Thermopylae, Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) attempts to stop the Persian forces – led by Artemisia (Eva Green) – at sea with a rag-tag battalion of Athenian farmers and volunteers.

REVIEW: Sequel probably isn’t the right word for 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE. Maybe “side-quel” would be more apropos, with the main action of the film coinciding with the events of 300. Remember the famous “THIS IS SPARTA!” scene where Leonidas kills the Persian Emissary? Well, turns out our new hero – Themistokles – was there too, observing from the sidelines. Coincidently, the only characters he interacted with are those played by returning cast-members Lena Headey and David Wenham.

As such, 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE can’t help but feel like a b-storyline, with Themistokles struggles at sea lacking the drama or rousing camaraderie of Leonidas and his men. It doesn’t help that where the first film had Gerard Butler and a soon-to-be-famous Michael Fassbender, in the sequel we get the unproven Sullivan Stapleton. As Australian actor best known stateside for his part in ANIMAL KINGDOM, and his role on the Cinemax show STRIKE BACK, Stapleton is a good actor, but a bad fit for this kind of movie. Gerard Butler can certainly be hit or miss, but it can’t be denied he was at his very best playing Leonidas, giving the kind of “over-the-top” performance the movie needed. These films are so heavily stylized that you need a hero that’s larger-than-life, and Stapleton is not up to the task. He may have Butler’s six-pack, but he’s too low-key in the part and comes off as terribly bland.

With Stapleton such a non-entity here, it’s no surprise the focus of the film drifts towards Eva Green as the Greek-born Artemesia. Green throws herself into the part with gusto. Only Green could get away with scenes like the one where she decapitates an Athenian soldier and then plants a passionate kiss on his lifeless head. Normally, such a scenery-chewing performance would be ridiculous, but here it works. She’s really the only one who even comes close to capturing the charisma of someone like Butler, and she utterly dominates the film whenever she’s on screen. Luckily, director Noam Murro gives her a lot of screen time, with frequent cutaways to her in the heat of battle. The only time RISE OF AN EMPIRE almost recaptures the manic energy of the first film is during a great scene where Artemesia lures Themistokles for a parlay and winds up seducing him, resulting in a hilarious fight/sex scene that ends with a topless Green brandishing a sword.

Otherwise, the film is rather dull. Murro, whose only previous credit – the indie comedy SMART PEOPLE – makes him an unlikely choice to direct a 300 sequel does a relatively good job aping Zack Snyder’s style (with composer Junkie XL doing a solid job stepping in for Snyder regular Tyler Bates), even if he does it without any panache. There’s tons of gory action (like the first film, it embraces the R-rating), but nothing is especially memorable unless Green is involved. The action feels more like something from a 300-clone like IMMORTALS than the real thing. Truthfully, the big problem here isn’t Stapleton. He doesn’t help matters, but the screenplay (co-authored by Snyder himself) lacks drama. Themistokles doesn’t have any of the motivation Leonidas had, being portrayed as just a dutiful soldier without any emotional attachments whatsoever, and it’s unlikely audiences will find themselves invested in his story. A sub-plot involving father-son soldiers played by Callan Mulvey and future-star Jack O’Connell (STARRED-UP) seems promising at first, but neither is given enough screen-time to really make an impression.

While I don’t think anyone really expected 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE to measure up to its predecessor, it’s disappointing that the film is so deadly dull. The filmmakers probably would have been better off if they had done a straight follow-up depicting the Spartan battle against Xerxes (who’s barely in the film after the first twenty minutes) teased at the original’s conclusion. RISE OF AN EMPIRE seems to exist as a stepping-stone for a whole series of follow-ups (with the ending all but promising a sequel) but it’s so bland that it’s a stretch to think anyone will be clamoring for another installment. Chalk this one up as a major letdown.

THis film was awesome. Your review is bad.
This film had its own personality. Thermosticolese is a strategist and a politician. Whereas Leonidas was a Warrior King. I expected it to be bad but it turned out awesome and leaves some for the 3rd part.

Horrible

I love a mindless action flick just as much as the next person. I pretty much went into this film with the mindset of "its probably not as good as 300, but some more of the same would just be damn fun". Plus, Eva Green.

I was pretty dissapointed in this movie. The plot was pretty generic and dumb. Constant battles on storm ravaged seas on ships with no railings bashing into each other. Almost every character (except Xerxes, who is barely in the film), is so one dimensional and lame.

I was pretty dissapointed in this movie. The plot was pretty generic and dumb. Constant battles on storm ravaged seas on ships with no railings bashing into each other. Almost every character (except Xerxes, who is barely in the film), is so one dimensional and lame. The lead couldnt carry the film. Even the amazing Eva Green (who was great) had a horribly one dimensional character. The the fight-sex scene was overblown, despite how sexy she is.

The blood and gore is excessive, and I dont mean excessive like making me sick at my stomach. Part of what made the first one so great was that it looked like the comic book. The blood spatters, etc. were kinda 2 dimensional. No one saw 300 and said "that looks so realistic". It was a comic book brought to life. They couldnt recreate the right look IMO for this one. The spatters looked 3 dimensional, and the gore more realistic.

Also, can anyone tell me why we have Lena Headey showing up at the end with as much fighting skills as Gerard Butler in the first one? What the actual F?

I really wanted to like this movie.

And PS: The abs werent nearly as ripped in this one. hahaha

I Loved 300: Rise of An Empire

I thought 300: Rise of An Empire was WAY better than the first 300. Eva Green was FANTASTIC as Artemesia. She was a bad-ass bitch and I loved every minute she was on screen.

This had most of what I look for in having a kick ass time at the show. Seriously, man up people, you cast doubt on the talent-less and turn around never to support the talent-full. If this ushers in summer, then it is one hell of a start. Oh, and see it in IMAX for christ's sake.

I didn't see this as a letdown, cause I knew it couldn't compare to the original 300, I liked this one though. If 300 was 9/10 this one was a 7/10 and I welcome another sequel.

Kinda loved it

I heartily respect my boy Bumbray, but I'm of the opposite opinion on this one. Blood, boobs, brutality, and a booming score/sound design, this hit all the right notes for me after a string of stale PG-13 "action" flicks that only wish they had half the balls that this movie does. Stapleton is fine, even if he's no Gerard Butler, but the true revelation here is Eva Green. One of the best female villain roles I've seen in a long time. It's worth seeing this flick just to see her. And her boobs.

I respect your opinion, but

I still enjoyed watching this movie. That's all that matters to me. Oh and Eva Greene was great in the movie. No I'm not talking about the sex scene, but her body of work was icing on the cake. :D

Invert the reviewers rating!

I've figured out how to deduce actual ratings from the reviews on here. Just flip whatever number rating it was given with its positive or negative counterpart. 4=8 and inversely 8=4. 3=6 or 2=4. 5 would be the up in the air number but the rest seem to fit. Saw the film last night and loved it. Great companion piece to 300 with awesome heroes and villains and insanely beautiful looking water battle scenes. Seriously though this is a movie for fanboys which this site seems primarily comprised

Green topless may be a plus, but if I wanna see her naked and see some awesome bush, I'll watch The Dreamers. Full frontal!!!

The first one 8/10
This one 6/10, however Eva Green topless bumped it up to a 7/10. Very fun movie.

Nothing about this seemed enticing in the least. 300 was an entertaining, stylish film that benefited from it's cast, dialogue, and action. This looks to be a mimic of that. And am I the only one who just isn't that big a fan of Ava Green? I'll probably rent this, but I have no interest in seeing this in theater.

Hilarious!

That clip with her sword fighting a guy three times her weight on a boat was some of the funniest footage I've seen in a long time. I couldn't stop laughing for the rest of the day after watching her slender arms parry thrusts from a guy who could bench press 300 pounds. A decent sized wave would knock her tiny frame off the deck of the boat in the blink of an eye. Eva Green's armor looks like something out of a costume ball at the local Goth club.

Because we all know size matters in a fight. Bruce Lee was barely 130lbs and could literally defeat anyone.

Just watch the first one again

This movie is like the retarded step brother of 300. What made 300 great is missing from this movie. This is like the direct to dvd sequel that was so bad Asylum wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

Bottom line, I actually hope you guys like it as clearly people are looking forward to it. But I think the big failing here is the leading man. He's not awful but (to me anyway) he lacks presence. I think action guys like Butler are underrated. He brings a lot of charisma to the part. Stapleton may be fine in other things, but this is not a good showcase for what he can do. If they had a really strong lead it would have made all the difference.

One of my buddies saw it last night and he said that thats probably going to be a complaint because people are expecting him to be another LEONIDAS when infact he is not. Hes a different character completely. His a tactician and politician who is leading regular men. Not Soldiers bred for war.

I agree 100 percent about that Chris, Stapleton was an odd choice. I love him in Strike Back but they could have done a lot better for a lead. Comparing him to Butler is unfair, no contest there, and likely a big part if the reason you gave such a cool flick that shitty rating. 300: Rise of an Empire was a bloody good time, pun intended!

What an awful review! You literally looked for anything to dislike. Allow me to spare you the suspense, there will be no Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor/Actress in a leading or supporting role, or anything else for that matter, but goddamn was this movie a good time! If you enjoyed the first one go see it, you will not regret it!

I don't want to criticize reviewers (I too am a reviewer) but sometimes I feel that you guys (joblo) are too hard on movies. I feel you have to judge by what the movie is aiming to do. This movie wants to give us cool action, cool visuals and a story that is simple enough to keep all of that going. By that this movie should automatically get a pass because it does all that. After that, you can get into how well it accomplished what it set out to do etc. Like the first 300 is a 10/10 -

The transformers movies are not. They want to deliver big action and epic storytelling, but they only get half. The stupid comedy destroys any realm of seriousness and the dialogue is bad etc. The transformer movies deliver action though and its amazing action, so they are 5/10 - 6/10 because they bring half of what they want.

To your point about 300 - what in your mind would've made that movie better to bring it to 10/10? The pacing was good, the story was good and had some feeling too

What was missing that you don't say its 10/10?

Unsurprising.
I don't know ANYONE irl who was chomping at the bit for this sequel. When I ask them about it they usually do an eye roll lol.

I will buy a used copy at my local Game/DVD/BluRay resale shop just for Eva Green's tits.

What are you smoking? The movie was badass

I saw this film last night and it was never ever dull. The action was spectacular and the story was about the same as the first. Eva Green steals the movie but the main actor in this did a good job. I thought it was on par with the first one. My only gripe is that it jumps from scene to scene too quickly without giving the audience some breathing room. Just like the first one, this is a spectacular guy movie. If you liked the first one you'll love this one.

THATS exactly what made the first one such a cultural phenomenon. It was the "perfect" guy movie. It wasnt trying to be anything else and the movie should be reviewed under those merits. Seems like Chris was reviewing it under the impression he was about to get Braveheart or Gladiator. Pity. Most of the other reviewers reviewed it as a "guy" movie and gave it between 6 and 8 out of ten.

Major letdown? That's disappointing to read. The trailers for the film have been awesome, so it's terrible to read that the film is boring.

Dont let this review turn you off from it. Read others from around the net. All or mostly all positive reviews.

I gave it a 5 out of 10 but yeah, do agree with this review. Ultimately a case of more of the same in a side-quel that's late to the party. Stapleton seems like a less charismatic substitute for Butler and it's hard to ignore the over the top silliness, because it's not overt enough to be campy or kitschy and the film still wants desperately to be tough and badass. Also, if Artemesia is such a formidable warrior, why does she have to fall back on her seductive wiles? Yes, Eva Green bares her

Yes, Eva Green bares her breasts again, but I don't think it was in service to the character at all.

I wasnt excited to see this film after seeing the trailer for the first time and now Im even less excited knowing that this isnt about the battle following the death of the 300 Spartan soldiers from the first film. Guess I wasnt paying attention to what this story was about whenever this site posted anything about the film.

Yeah. I was really hoping it was about the battle right after.

VERY Surprising

Everywhere else that im reading is saying this movie is on par if not slightly better than the original. And while its not a "great" movie. Its certainly fun and awesome. Oh well.
