Review: Transcendence

Apr. 18, 2014by: Chris Bumbray

PLOT: When Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is fatally wounded in an assassination attempt, his wife (Rebecca Hall) and research partner (Paul Bettany) decide to upload his consciousness into a super computer. Thus, Will is reborn as a sentient machine with near limitless power. But is it still Will, or has his humanity been lost forever?

REVIEW: Considering former DP turned director Wally Pfisters long association with Christopher Nolan credited here as an executive producer one couldnt help but have high hopes for TRANSCENDENCE. The trailers were intriguing, if a little familiar, with this seeming like a mega-budget, 21st century take on THE LAWNMOWER MAN. Incredibly, TRANSCENDENCE actually pales in comparison to that admittedly goofy film, and emerges one of the years first major disappointments, and a puzzling failure considering the talent involved.

There are so many problems with TRANSCENDENCE that one hardly knows where to begin. For one thing, TRANSCENDENCE hinges on the relationship between Will and his wife Evelyn, played by Rebecca Hall. Theyre supposed to be a tragic couple whose plight should move us. It never does, as theres no chemistry at all between Hall and Depp, with both of them giving oddly off-kilter performances. Depp as seems to be his custom these days really phones it in here, with 90% of his screen time seeing him as a talking head on a monitor. Imagine a high-tech Max Headroom, but less cool. One could argue that Depps robotic performance is appropriate given the part, but even in Wills human scenes pre-upload, Depp seems listless. As for Hall, shes been excellent in the past, but her character is so poorly written that shes all but impossible to sympathize with. From the beginning, she seems almost insane in her desire to turn her dying lover into some kind of super-computer, and it takes a ludicrously long time for her to realize that his new power is sapping his humanity. The fact that their relationship is impossible to ever engage with emotionally would be enough to make TRANSCENDENCE a failure, but it gets worse.

Once Wills consciousness is uploaded to the internet, hes able to transform Evelyn into one of the worlds richest women by manipulating the stock market, allowing the two to buy a small town in New Mexico where they build a super compound with technology that allows them to cure any physical impediment with nanotechnology. None of this is ever questioned by the authorites mind you. The only catch is that when someone is fixed by Will, they virtually become his slaves, with him able to control them all via the fact that theyre networked. This should be presented as some kind of ethical dilemma, but its barely addressed. The worst problem is that the world apparently knows about Wills work, with him constantly uploading information to the internet and clips to YouTube. Yet, when it comes time to deal with Will and his army, it comes down to Cillian Murphy as a lone FBI agent, Morgan Freeman as Wills former mentor, and a handful of mercenaries. If a major super-computer was on the verge of taking over the world, wouldnt it call for a bit of a heavier response? The film has no international scope whatsoever, and the worlds reaction to a super computer essentially taking over mankind is never addressed. Considering that the script by Jack Paglen was on the Black List and so widely acclaimed, this seems like a major plot hole.

Even worse is Paul Bettanys part in the proceedings. For the first half, Bettany felt like the only fully realized character, with him being the only one with qualms about uploading Will into a computer. Early on, hes kidnapped by a neo-luddite terrorist group run by a crazy-eyed Kate Mara. This is the same group thats responsible for giving his friend an agonizing demise and killing dozens of innocent people early on, yet it barely takes any time for him to be won over to their side. If the group was at least well-organized or had a decent argument against technology that would be one thing, but the film presents them as four insane hackers who do nothing but kill innocent people. And were supposed to sympathize with them! Heck, toward the end were even supposed to root for them!

If all that werent bad enough, theres a final twist that takes what had merely been a bad film up to that point, and elevates it to a level that approaches high camp. Its so bad that even the more patient viewers that have somehow forgiven the terrible plotting and awkward performances will turn against it. Suffice to say TRANSCENDENCE is an all-out disaster, and a really terrible way for Pfister to start his directorial career. In the end, it really comes down to an intriguing idea thats been really poorly executed. The only positive thing that could be said about it is that it looks nice, with it having been photographed in 35mm, resulting in a really lush image if you get to see it in IMAX. TRANSCENDENCE is almost worth seeing just to see how horribly awry it goes, but in the end it cant even be recommended on a so bad its good level. Considering the talent and resources the studio poured into this, its just a depressing film to slog through and deadly dull. Avoid it.

Not as horrible as people say

Really not a terrible movie. The script has problems but i thought it was great. It seems like Pfister is getting flack because it's his first directed film, and people are comparing it to Nolan. I don't think it's meant to be on that scale, it's a sci-fi/action flick and it's also fairly thought provoking. Every character besides the main 3 seemed underdeveloped, but I don't think it would have seemed that way had it not been such a star-studded cast.

Paul Bettany's character is the most badass person in this movie

he's a computer scientist. he's a brain surgeon. he leads the siege on complex.

This review was so dead on. I couldn't believe Paul's character didn't even mention the ppl being killed by the group. Hell Rebecca comes face to face with the terriosts group and doesn't even mention them killing her husband. It also takes her waaaay too long to realize that Depp is doing done questionable stuff. This movie was like watching Uwe Boll try to make a Nolan film.

Opinions are like ........

Even though the movie wasn't as good as I hoped it to be I think it deserves more than 3 stars. Is it a must see? No. I think I would of enjoyed seeing Captain America again instead. I agree Depp's performance was less than stellar and Rebecca's role was poorly written, the story kept me intrigued enough where it did not drag on for me. I'd give it 6 stars.

This one had 'turd' written all over it from the get-go, everything from the premise to the cast looked like crap.

It was ok

Some if the ideas were very interesting but the execution was off. The second act was really well done but everything fell apart badly in the third. It felt very rushed.

Such a massive disappointment for me. The only problems I really had with it were with the script. I felt the acting was about as good as it could get for the script the actors had to work with and about the only highlights were the actual ideas presented and the relationship that is center for the film. But the film overall was just so very disappointing. And I won't out rightly call Pfister a bad director, because, with what he had he seemed to do a decent job. But that script was just so

After seeing movies I generally end up feelign the opposite of how Bumbray feels. It's crazy how often I love a movie he hated and vice versa. Which is not a knock on him, to each his own by all means. I wasn't really looking forward to Transcendence but now i'm definitely more intereted in seeing it sooner rather that later.

You should think about becoming a reveiwer for the site, since your opinion seems to be so much better. But, Oculus and Noah were pretty good, so, no idea what you're talking about.

Noah WAS pure shit. I haven't seen this since the test screening, but I thought it was pretty bad with the potential of better scoring and trimming the fat. I trust Bumbray's opinion that none of that happened

I enjoyed Noah, however I completely agree on Oculus. I wasn't expecting much, but the reviews it was getting was amazing. So I spent my 6 dollars, and it was trash. Minor plot, and no development at all.

I agree with you about oculus, but noah I can't I really loved that film it was just so different and awesome plus I'm a huge DA fan so that help. Now IDK why everybody gave oculus such raving reviews saying it was such a refreshing horror movie and all this other shit. Maybe they saw a different cut of the movie or a different movie all together because the one I watched was boring as fuck, predictable out of the ass, and the most cliche piece of crap I ever laid my eyes on. If cinema history has taught us anything, it's that cinematographers don't necessarily make good directors. I feel bad for the guy but when you go trashing other people's work, especially people who respect you, then you're going to get what's coming. I think Wally was aiming to make an 'Inception'-like movie when he should have started out doing something like 'Memento.' It's all about paying your dues and not use someone else's powerful influence to make what you want out of the gate. Lesson

I'm getting the sense

That the problem with the film is what was evident in the trailer: That there's an anachronistic, outdated understanding of what the threat of singularity really represents. You can't really take this silly if the technology is some type of bogeyman that doesn't jive with what we know about technology today. I mean SkyNet is about as realistic and accurate and that was dreamed up in a monster movie how many decades ago.

Movie looked interesting, but it is obviously not for everyone.

I will still see it. I love 90s techno-thrillers and this puts off a very Lawnmower Man feel. I am not expecting it to be any good though. But you get a cast like this together and its bound to be a little watchable.

Poetic justice? Remember when Wally Pfister was bashing Joss Whedon & The Avengers because he claimed that Whedon didn't know how to properly tell a story? He said Whedon used too many wide shots that showed off sets instead of focusing on story.

He was criticizing the cinematography. And considering his work as a cinematographer, I would say he can express his opinion. And the cinematography in this film is one of the better aspects of it.

Yeah, the two things aren't even close to being related. Accidentally (or purposely) messing up the facts certainly doesn't help your cause either. As Freeden said, he was criticizing the use of cameras and the overall cinematography in The Avengers, and honestly it's not like he was wrong. Phister is one of the best DP's in the business, so I think he knows what he's talking about.

But being a director, and a DP are two completely different things. Obviously his first directorial outing

@SauronsBANE

You just show your ignorance with your post.

Phister blatantly bashed The Avengers, and not just the cinematography (which was shot by Seamus McGarvey, one of the best cinematographers in the business) but he specifically said that the storytelling was appalling. When it came time for him to tell a story, he actually showed that his storytelling skills were appalling. And you can't blame the script, because the Transcendence script is online and it is actually a very good

You act like Phister is a film student who just made his first short film. Phister graduated AFI film school in the 80s, and AFI is one of the very best film school programs in the world. He has been shooting major motion pictures for over 20 years. He has worked with the best of filmmakers. He has the experience and an insight into filmmaking and the resources that most filmmakers never get. Yet he still made a terrible movie.

To put things into perspective. Steven Spielberg's first film was a TV movie called Duel. It won awards and got a theatrical release because people loved it so much. Christopher Nolan's first film was Following, which won awards and got very good reviews. Darren Aronofsky's first film was Pi, another award winning and critically praised film. Usually whenever a filmmaker's first film sucks, it's because they didn't have the resources or the money to make something better. But a lot of talented first time filmmakers take what little they have, and make something awesome out of it.

Not surprised it turned out shitty. Sounded really interesting until I saw the trailer. Depp seemed very bland to me. I wish he would take a five year hiatus, find himself, and come back to Hollywood.

I thought it was alright. It's a throwback to 90s techno-thrillers, just slightly less silly, and I guess there is an audience out there for that. To compare it to more recent sci-fi thrillers, there's a bit of Source Code and Rise of the Planet of the Apes in it too. Rebecca Hall was excellent, she's believable as a scientist and honestly, this is the least silly Johnny Depp has been in a good while. I don't think it's an "all-out disaster" by any means.

Completely agree. I really don't see why people HATED the movie. I thought the acting and directing were really great, I think that Depp and Hall had great chemistry (especially after Depp "transcended"). The only problems were with the script, and they were minor problems at that.

Sorry for being the unpopular opinion here, but I've never been a fan of Wally Pfister. His work is bland and listless, despite his claims that Avengers was more so. He was never going to hack it as a director.

@ aerketype

He is what Pfister said about Avengers:
"What's really important is storytelling. None of it matters if it doesn't support the story. I thought The Avengers was an appalling film. They'd shoot from some odd angle and I'd think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling."

Wally is one of the best cinematographers out there. And since this is his first film as a director he may not have been ready yet to make the transition. Or he may never be able to make the transition. Only time will tell on that.
