Robert Downey Jr. discusses Iron Man 4

Jul. 23, 2014by: Sean Wist

It really all started with IRON MAN and Robert Downey Jr. At the time it wasn't a sure thing, but waves were made and now we have an Iron Man trilogy, two Avengers movies and countless other Marvel projects in the works. Fortunately, RDJ seems to be having a ball playing in Marvel's playground, and he knows that his Tony Stark will bring home the bacon. IRON MAN 3 ended up making over $1.2 billion worldwide, so there's certainly no signs of that franchise slowing down. We know that RDJ is not contractually obliged to appear in anything after AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, so how does he feel about about returning as Stark after?

In Robert Downey Jr.'s own words:

Its down to Kevin [Feige] and Ike [Perlmutter] and Disney to come to us with what the proposal is, and thats on us to agree or disagree. When things are going great, theres a lot of agreement. Right now, this has just been swell, hasnt it? This has been a really good one and it feels good and were having a good time. Its that thing of why give up the belt when it feels like you can barely get jabbed? Most people are saying that right when they get knocked out. The future is, as usual, uncertain.

The good news is that he certainly doesn't seem opposed to the idea, and being the highest paid actor at the moment, why would he? That is the first step in getting RDJ back in the role. Then it will come down to whatever agreement he can reach with Marvel to return to the character. No doubt I imagine that if they manage to sign him up again, it'll be for several pictures, rather than just one. While RDJ turns 50 next year, he certainly doesn't show any signs of slowing down. We're likely to see some more of Mr. Stark by week's end, at this year's San Diego Comic Con, so check back to keep up to date with his endeavors!

We'll next see Tony Stark deal with his own twisted creation in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on May 1, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: Would you like to see Downey Jr. return as Stark, or have someone else take on the role?

I still think IronMan is gonna die in Avengers 2 or somehow end up with the guardians. Something really off from what anyone would guess. They know Iron Man is the longest running Avenger and they will need to spice the characters storyline up.

The highest paid actor two years in a row has been RDJ .So it`s safe to say 2015 and 2016 will be the year of the Downey - [link] .It reminds of Kevin Smith ,when he said there was a stand off between Bruce Willis and the studio on DH4 and Bruce said to the head of the studio ,"Whose your second choice to play John McClane." RDJ is gonna be in Iron Man 4 i bet on it.

TIDBIT: RDJ is Stark period. Do i need another Iron Man? Not really, im fine with him showing up in Avengers and Marvel expanding the universe with other characters.

The guy really found a great defining character, and honestly, he would be stupid to turn this down at this point unless there was a health or family issue. I just hope he uses this money and influence to do a few more Chaplin's in his future.

All for RDJ coming back but.....

No more armored thugs. I know Ironmans villain pool isnt all that impressive, so maybe a small group of villains or A.I.M. Just dont want to see another guy in a armored suit or glowing people, unless that glowing person is Living Laser.

The problem is that if the villains are too weak - he can defeat them in one punch, if they are super powered alien beings, he cant really win (well maybe he can), so armored guys are really his only villains.

Even whiplash was bad - I mean his body was half exposed when they fought on the race track - Iron man should've destroyed him in one punch!

oh well, bring crimson dynamo!!!

Are you out of your mind? Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk both came out in 2008. But Iron Man was released prior to Hulk. And, at the very end of Iron Man, Nick Fury is recruiting him for the AVENGER Initiative.

The first thing that hinted at the building of the MCU was actually the post-credits scene of Iron Man 1, with Nick Fury. Not the scene in The Incredible Hulk.

I'm sure he'd be down grand death and resurrection saga for Tony. Also, still really love Iron Man 3. I know everyone says Marvel exercises too much control over the directors but Iron Man 3 was, for better or for worse, unmistakably a Shane Black movie - and I think it was for better.

The best part about Iron Man 3 was when an 8 year old kid had to remind Tony to do what he already does every day - build something. He couldn't remember because he was... stressed out or something , right? That or when he decided "oh wait, I have an army of suits ready to go at any time, but I'll just wait till the end." And instead of actually being Iron Man he just used a PSone controller the entire film.

Nice. SMH

Hopefully they can make up for 2 & 3 if they decide to make a fourth. Downey jr is always fantastic though.

You know, the complaining about Iron Man 3 is really getting tiresome.

Kinda makes you wish they'd actually made a good film, so there wouldn't be the need for so much complaining, huh?

Actually, his post-"Iron Man 3" deal was for two more "Avengers" films, so he is obligated to return for "Avengers 3".

I always thought Marvel and Downey Jr should do one more Iron Man film and have Tony face off against the REAL Mandarin this time around and have his last solo film be him against his strongest opponent. Plus, I think it would make alot of fans happy who weren't so pleased with Iron Man 3 and the risky twist it took.

Couple of things:

1) Didn't he sign on for Avengers 2 and 3 at the same time? I recall hearing that he wasn't contractually obligated after Iron Man 3, but Marvel got him to sign for both Avengers sequels under one contract. Can anyone confirm?
2) Keep it rare. Just my opinion, but I say no to Iron Man 4. I love RDJ as Stark, clearly one of the best actors they have around, but at this point I think he's like the Hulk: too much exposure and it ruins why we love him so much. Keep him in starring roles in the

Keep him in starring roles in the Avengers films every few years, give him small cameos outside of that, perhaps involve him in a short or a Oscars gig (or other show) where he shows up as Stark, but no more Iron Man films. It'll ruin the novelty of it.

it seems like once they figured out how to CG the armor so he didn't have to wear as heavy of a suit, he was more willing to do more movies. I know early on he was talking about how much wear and tear it was on his body to do the scenes in the suit, so he wasn't sure how many more he would be willing to do.
He's nailed this roll and seems to really enjoy it, so here's to more Marvel with RDJ

Right now I can't see any other actor as Tony Stark so I'm down for RDJ reprises the role. As for Iron Man 4, I guess it will continue after the event of The Avengers 2 and take it from there some how.
