Exclusive: Early screenings scoop of Man of Steel reveal more about the tone, action, and Superman "kicking all kinds of ass"

02.27.2013

With its release four months away, the anticipation for Warner Bros. Superman reboot, MAN OF STEEL, has built momentum faster than a speeding bullet.  The first two trailers teased us at the potential of a Superman film that would finally live up to the title of "MAN OF STEEL." However, they've also been a bit dark and light on action, which has led some to believe we may see a retread of SUPERMAN RETURNS, rather than the smash-up superhero tale that the The Last Son of Krypton deserves.  The darker tone has also suggested that Christopher Nolan may have injected too much "Dark Knight" influence over the film.

Well, according to our source, your fears may well finally be put to rest.

A scooper (whom we know and trust 100%) has sent us reactions to early screenings of the film happening at WB, addressing many of the common concerns that we've all had from the beginning.  Here's his bullet points from the screening(s):

- Imagine a Nolan story with Snyder effects/action.
- It's the best movie of the year.
- There's TONS of action with Superman kicking all kinds of ass in his suit.
- The cape is CG'd most of the time so it can look awesome.
- They have intentionally left out most of the the Super action in trailers to save it.
- It's not nearly as dour and serious as the trailers suggest.

- The movie is complete, minus the 3D post-conversion, which is currently taking place

So, to summarize...awesome!  Now, it's a bold claim to call it the "best movie of the year," especially this early on, but everything else is golden.  To me, having tons of action was the biggest requirement, because we haven't really seen Big Blue do some serious damage since the 1970's and that's with some seriously antiquated effects. The CGI cape hasn't really been a secret and we can see as much in the trailers already.  Personally, I'm totally down with it and have no qualms.

The other thing brought up is the tone, which really sails on the dramatic in the latest trailer, suggesting that the film may be another THE DARK KNIGHT, but I'm happy to hear that it's not a completely melancholy affair.  However, he does suggest that it lives within the Nolan-verse, but with Zack Snyder's signature style.  And that's just fine.  If Snyder can do anything, it's action with style, so no complaints here.

Naturally, this is one person's opinion on the film, but it certainly paints a beautiful picture and assuages my own fears about having to sit through a two hour movie to watch Superman throw a rock into space and stalk his girlfriend.  I look forward to hearing more information, naturally, and to get a broader scope of reactions, but this is a good development. Certainly, the new trailer, which is set to debut in April, will be telling and likely drive the excitement into the red. Fingers crossed for this one to pack a serious punch.

MAN OF STEEL, starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Christopher Meloni, and Diane Lane starts "kicking all forms of ass" on June 14, 2013.

Methinks they protest too much, Super

I'll hold until I see it but I grew up with Superman and if they ruin it with MOROSE and DARK and CONTEMPLATIVE then you'll hear me from the rooftops. Superman is not to be screwed with, people. This is THE original superhero in my book and so far no one has convinced me this won't be a total BUMMER

God I hope this movie is everything this person said it was. We need a great Superman movie. Marvel Phase One and the Dark Knight trilogy did it right, this should too.

If the movie is great, Nolan will get all the credit. If not, Snyder will get all the blame.
Either way, if it's half the masterpiece Watchmen was, we're in good shape.

Come on, man. Masterpiece? It was a fine adaptation and all but a masterpiece? That Night Owl/ Silk Spectre sex scene is one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen in a film. If this movie isn't the best thing Snyder has ever done then I think it will be a failure. He hasn't set the bar all that high.

Direct quote from Nolan on Man of Steel ->"I actually feel guilty talking about it because Iím sitting here having nothing to do to it. I try to be as supportive as I can."
So PLEASE stop trying to convince people that this is a quasi-Nolan film. His name is there just to sell the movie. WB knows that fans will over-hype themselves and project the idea of 'Nolan' onto this film.

I have been saying this for a long time!

Zach Snyder's ability to shoot action is awesome, maybe the best there is, way better than Nolan, it's what has made him successful, his grasp on story - not so much. Sucker Punch looked awesome, but story was incoherent, 300's action sequences resembled a comic more than any film other than maybe Sin City, but there was barely a story. But not to worry, the reason the Nolan Batman's were awesome wasn't the action, it was story, Inception, it was the story, Memento, again the story. Christopher

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are masters at building a story. So for this movie we will have the best of both worlds, the best looking action, supported by the best story. AWESOME - "- Imagine a Nolan story with Snyder effects/action" - I have been saying this since day one.

Studio Desperation Already?

This smells like a desperate WB move to create early buzz because the film can't stand on its own. Didn't we get the exact same thing for Green Lantern? They also can't wait to tie anything to Nolan but I've read that Nolan had very little input in to the film itself. If this movie is the mess we all fear, watch the Nolan fans make sure that is known after the fact.

Nothing against the movie

but this review fails to move me. It's way, way way too emotional, and loaded with hyperbole. I have to question the individual's recognition that his dishing of the movie is exclusive to an extent, and it may be affecting his enthusiasm. Also, without any context, and comments like "the cape is CGI" is presented as evidence - I just don't see why this person's reaction would be predictive of the movie's quality. About 4 or 5 of the 7 bullet points could have been said by somebody who saw and

Again - I'm NOT holding this gushing review AGAINST the movie - just that I've been around the block to recognize this for what it is - one fanboy's strong approval. I do see the hyperbole and opposing viewpoints in the comment thread as further vindication that fanboys are all over the map, and with all due respect to Paul an his recent article - they are definitely not the answer to making movies better in Hollywood.

End credits suggestion

I would just love to see an end credits scene on this film that teases future Justice League. Perhaps Batman appearing behind Supes, and Supes crediting him for being able to sneak up on him. That would be all kinds of awesome.

Stoked!!!

It was already my most anticipated movie of the year, and this just solidifies it! And memo to WB - if you do intend on using this to kickstart Justice League, just back up the Brinks truck to Christian Bale's garage and give him whatever he wants. You'll thank me for it later when JL makes Avengers-type box office. It's really the only way to go.

Get off of Zack Snyder's Dick

Everybody seems so worried superman might not throw a punch and it's going to be Superman Returns all over again, instead you should be worried that some hack who knows how to make things look pretty is the director. So what Snyder can paint a pretty picture? It doesn't mean shit. Zack Snyder is totally clueless about story telling, that's why Nolan and Goyer will get all the credit. Sucker Punch is unforgivable and no mater how you break it down Watchmen sucked.

Except Nolan wasn't really involved in the movie, so giving him credit like that is asinine. This film finished shooting principal photography while Nolan was neck deep in TDKR post production. Also, Goyer has written films far worse than anything Snyder's been involved with (in fact every script he has ever written by himself).

Snyder is the director. He IS THE storyteller here. Goyer wrote the script, but telling the story is entirely up to Snyder. To give anyone else the credit for this

To give anyone else the credit for this is just fanboys being complete idiots and making up their own behind the scenes fantasies, like they often do. You WANT Nolan to direct this, so you'll pretend he did, completely ignoring logic and reality. You'll pretend that Snyder is only working in the effects department, and the Director title does not apply. Though only in this one instance, in every other movie the director is the storyteller, just not this time. [link]

All assuming it's a good movie nobody wants to talk about the possibility that it's terrible. Zack Snyder's track record is awful and everybody ignores it because his movies are so pretty, let's say Man of Steel is a good movie Zack Snyder is 2 for 5, and it's not like his bad movies are missteps they are colossal piles of shit. By your logic this movie is going to suck because nobody else helped Goyer write the script. Here's a fun fact for you Zack Snyder defenders he was only hired because they needed a director who could make the film quickly not because he's talented. 10 more years and Zack Snyder joins the likes of M Night Shyamalan and Michael Bay.

As for Snyder, well I for one don't like his "style of action". I do hope this Superman turns out good. But nothing I just read here makes me feel better about this movie. I still have somewhat of a bad feeling about it... But here's hoping it turns out good.

How? Rick McCallum was a producer on that movie, so of course he would talk it up. There are many examples of positive buzz coming out of test screenings that carried over to the general public. You chose to be reminded of an unrelated movie within a different circumstance. You looked for a negative example, rather than a positive. Seems to me you already have a biased inclination toward hating a movie you haven't seen.

I want to stay positive but this just sounds like shilling from a studio mole to me. I also remember last year when news from the WB on an early screening for Dark Knight Rises was that it was so good that it got a 30 minute standing ovation. Again, no judgements until its released but I just hope for one image or shot from the actual movie that will

Thank you for your subjective interpretation of Nolan's storytelling. It's your opinion, and that's perfectly acceptable, as long as you don't claim it as fact, because that is not your place, or anyone's for that matter. Others don't consider his writing boring, and, while his latest has some noticeable plot holes, this is not true of all of his work. I address this in response to Red4's post.

Pretty bold claims, but having Nolan involved I think helps. I like Snyder, despite his abundant use of the same kind of style in every movie he makes. I think having Nolan as a producer is a good way to keep the film somewhat grounded and in a more human frame than that of the likes of 300 and Watchmen. It certainly does have a very large mountain to climb, but the trailer is impressive. Superman was never really big with me, but I always like a good superhero movie, so this should be very

Your basing the plot holes on one movie. Looking at his filmography, his films historically are not full of plot holes. He is usually very meticulous in how he structures his films and plans the story (Inception was developed over 10 years). There may be plot holes in The Dark Knight Rises, but that is not true of all his movies.

Christopher Nolan has developed such a large fan base, and it seems Nolan haters have been waiting for a disappointment like The Dark Knight Rises. However, one letdown (and I liked the movie, so I don't consider it bad) does not disqualify him as a gifted storyteller. He still has done some great movies.

David Goyer, on the other hand? The one who actually wrote the script? Now, that is disconcerting. Also, I do have questions about Snyder as well. Nolan is the least of this movies concerns.

The one reason I was starting to be optimistic about the film was that there was no sign of his signature slo-mo in any of the trailers. That review is the first time where I'm genuinely worried about the film.

I'm not a huge Superman Returns fan, but to discredit the jet/space shuttle sequence is pretty unfair. It's pretty great.

Glad to hear that the tone is not like what the trailer suggests. Though I'm getting kind of sick of people name dropping Nolan. Nolan said that he really didn't have much to do with this movie, and he left it entirely to Snyder & Goyer. Sad thing is, Nolan's name is going to overshadow everyone's hard work. Even here Snyder only get credit for effects, everything else that's good gets lumped in with Nolan. Snyder is the director, not the effects guy, and not the action coordinator. This is

Not surprised. Snyder knows how to adapt comic books, he however is not good at making things out of original ideas. So with Nolan's guidance and his own thirst for action and violence, I know we have a good Superman movie on our hands.

CG today is not the same. Technology evolves. You can't make a judgement on this movie based on a movie made in 1997. Computers have advanced since then.

Strong reactions to MAN OF STEEL after screenings on the Warner Bros. lot? You don't say.

Snyder has always had potential and occasionally lives up to it. Hopefully he brought his A game to this one. Superman deserves an awesome movie.

I'm curious to see if this does in fact unify both Man of Steel and TDK Trilogy. If so, it's one way to start the DC Universe. Question is, will JGL become the new Batman IF there is a connection between the two franchises?

I would love if it did, but nolan has said a few times bruce was the only hero in that universe, lets home WB made him change it

A Bruce Wayne/Christian Bale cameo would be pretty awesome, I think fans would shit themselves. Don't need a specific timeline and Bruce can't be on business?

I hope they will be connected. I'd rather Bruce Wayne (Bale) return as batman than JGL's Robin.

People are really reading too much into this whole Nolan link. I bet you everything I own we won't see Batman/B.Wayne in this movie, or any mention of the character. Let it go guys.. I would love it as much as you, but it's just not going to happen! It's a Nolan story, not the Nolan-verse...!!

Seriously enough of the JGL for Batman shit. Its not going to happen and who in their right mind would want it too happen. He's is totally the wrong look for the part.

Justice League....

I think JL could go in the direction of JL...I mean when I first saw it I thought how they could of been the early incarnation of JL like the Justice Guild or something w/ the original Green Lantern and the original Flash w/ his tin hat. I think it would be a fun way to go if they make JL, I mean maybe a montage of the very first JL of sorts in the
Golden Age of comics.

I'm in.

I've always been on the fence about Supes, but holy hell if this doesn't look like it's going to be great. I also appreciate that WB is willing to keep trying until they get it right.

WOW

When I first heard the title of the movie The Man of Steel, I was terribly excited for this movie. I knew that they knew they had to get it right this time or gamble with the prospect of losing Superman for another 10 years or more.

"Imagine a Nolan story with Snyder effects/action"

First line I read and I was already sold.

I cannot wait for this. Reading this article has gotten me on the tip of my toes. Zack Snyder made Watchmen so good, and making some of my assumption for that film go away, especially with Dr. Manhattan. So Kudos Snyder. I cannot wait for this and Hans Zimmer's score.

Just for chills down by spine reading this article. Very excited to read that Man of Steel is amazing and that it is best movie of the year caliber.

What I am interested in is if there are any connections to Justice League or if there is a Wonder Woman cameo or a secret scene after the credits.

I'm already convinced that this will already be the best Superman movie we have seen. Anyone know if tickets are on sale yet?

I'm still hoping she gets her own movie first, but hopefully WB/DC has a plan and they are going to do it right, and push JL back and not try and rush it when Man of Steel makes a ton of money this summer

I'm already pumped and ready for Supes! The trailers thus far have been great, the casting couldn't be better, and I love the new suit design!
And with Nolan and Snyder joining forces, it FINALLY looks like we'll get a kick ass Superman flick!
