Simon Kinberg set to write the Fantastic Four reboot

10.01.2013

How we feeling about that FANTASTIC FOUR reboot that Josh Trank is directing? I think the word here is optimistic. The 2005 version fell flat, and felt like it was rushed just to get a movie about the foursome out. Maybe no one knew what to do with a superhero ensemble? We could go into the casting but that might launch a much larger debate. What's in the past is in the past and now it's time to start from the beginning.

Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, SHERLOCK HOLMES) has been hired to write the screenplay for the reboot. Looking over the writer's resume might make you feel a little hesitant. There's not too much that stands out but he does have superhero experience. The project has cycled through a number of writers with the last I recall being Seth Grahame-Smith. It's said that Kinberg will be doing a major overhaul of the script.

Regardless of my feelings on Kinberg, I still think that this project has plenty of potential. These are characters that deserve a good film. I wonder if they will want the tone to be "dark and edgy".

What do you guys want to see in a FANTASTIC FOUR movie? Who is your ideal writer on a project like this?

While I would love for this to get delayed long enough for the rights to revert back to Marvel, let's face it people: Marvel has so many bloody irons in the fire right now that even if they did get the rights back, it'd be probably about 5 more years before we get a Fantastic Four flick. At least 5 years. Seriously, just because they haven't announced it yet, Marvel already has Phase 3 planned out for the most part & it doesn't include a FF flick. I'd rather have a well done Fox-owned FF flick

It was a very different take on the superhero genre.

I'll watch but....

I'm still trying to unsee the first two movies with Jessica Alba. I haven't puked that hard or felt more raped (for my money) than the time I saw Daredevil with Afleck.

Extra tidbit: I want to see Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's take on Fantastic Four.

I wonder how they are gonna make Richards look heroic after they show him slapping around Sue for doing something he disagrees with

I'm still holding on to the fantasy casting as suggested by a fellow schmoe: George Clooney as Reed Richards and Charlize Theron as Sue Storm.

Fantastic Four is a tricky property for film, mainly because they're not strictly superheroes... they're explorers.

Yes, they fit a whole host of superhero archetypes so I don't argue any of that at all - my point is that their adventures mainly feature around exploring some uncharted galaxy or pocket of the negative zone or some such. That's their niche that no other team in the Marvel Universe really fills as well as them.

To me they're less interesting when they're battling through

To me they're less interesting when they're battling through familiar superheroics--they do this in the comics from time to time, and that's fine, but there's nothing to elevate it unless they go exploring. Will be interesting to see if they take that angle or if it's more of the same, except with less jokes and more scowling.

I would love to see a really good, well made Fanastic Four film. They were always one of my more favorite superheros and I would love to see a great origins film about then just as good as Iron Man or Batman Begins.

I smell a delay coming soon

With Kinberg being brought on to rewrite the initial story, the film would have to go into production early next year to reach its Spring 2015 release date. I doubt this is going to happen so this will likely be getting a 2016 release date.

We can only hope they don't make that September 2014 deadline. Galactus needs to be in an Avengers movie!

Could be worse...

Just keep that Thing suit and Tim Story as far from this project as possible.
