The 15th Annual Golden Schmoes Nominees are announced! (+ IMDB love!)

02.04.2016

Thanks to your nominations we have now compiled the final list of nominees for The 15th Annual JoBlo Movie Awards (aka The Golden Schmoes)! Final voting runs from Monday, February 8th through Wednesday, February 24th, with winners to be announced on Friday, February 26th, just ahead of the Oscars!

To note, the Golden Schmoes have been a staple of the site since its inception and we're proud to represent the popular vote and even have our winning results counted in the awards tally at IMDB (see below). So, thanks to everyone who voted and for letting your voice be heard! You'll still get one more shot as we prepare to vote for the winners now that the final nominees are in. Let's get into the final nominees, shall we?

Given the massive impact both MAD MAX: FURY ROAD and STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS have had on the fan community, it's no surprise those led the charge for most nominations (and deservedly so, in my opinion). I was pleasantly surprised to see both EX MACHINA and SICARIO get some strong love, as both have been all but ignored by the so-called "legit" awards shows. Can't beat the fan vote, though, and we got it covered this go round. It was also great to see KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE rack up some solid nominations, as it was no doubt one of the most surprisingly cool flicks of last year.

No records were broken in terms of MOST nominations (which still belongs to Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION with 19 nominations), but some were obviously favored more than others (see the most-nominated below). The selections were well in line with the popular opinion of most cinephiles (or, at least, the Schmoe community) and included a bigger selection of the more popular films we enjoyed this year, rather than an overwhelming dose of "Oscar bait" as is the case with most other awards shows. Overall, I think this is a great representation of some of the best films of 2015 and am proud of the nominee results. Y'all done good! Take a look at the nominees below and start planning out how you'll vote come next week...

MOST NOMINATIONS (2015)

We will also be running our 15TH ANNUAL OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST this year, so stay tuned for that as well. See previous years' GOLDEN SCHMOES winners below, along with this year's crop of nominations per category. Thanks for participating!

As per usual I'm rather disappointed some of my picks didn't do better (not to be a sore loser and bitch about it). I'm not surprised Sharknado 3 received no recognition (Best Action sequence, biggest disappointment). I am surprised that the dance scene from Ex Machina didn't make it onto the nominees for most memorable scene along with Samuel L. Jackson's monologue from the Hateful Eight (which I thought was a shoe in for that category or best line). Speaking of Best line I agree with

Speaking of Best line I agree with Kingsman but how did the line right before the church massacre not get nominated? Also no Anger from Inside Out for coolest character?

For the most part I'm pretty on board with the rest of the nominees, I'm really interested to see who voters are going to go for for favorite movie with Star Wars and Mad Max both being so beloved. Also interested to scene who wins in a contest between the Church scene from Kingsman and the finial chase from Mad Max (having a hard time deciding that one myself).

Walton Goggins!

Finally some well deserved recognition for Walton Goggins - I would easily swap him in for most of the other nominees for this year's Oscars.

CRIMSON PEAK isn't a horror movie.

Guillermo himself said it [link].

I really thought the following were going to be nominated:
-MISSION IMPOSSIBLE for Best Action Sequence (any of them) and Most Memorable Scene (the plane takes off with ETHAN outside).
-UNFRIENDED for Best Horror and Biggest Surprise.
-THE WALK for Most Memorable Scene (the walk itself).
-Any non-action comedy for Best Line.

A lot of Solid Noms...

Tom Hardy needs to get some love, but Walter Goggins and Leo deserve the awards this go around.
But seriously, really got to get rid of that best T&A category; a bit embarrassing.

Solid Nominations

I didn't have time to submit nominations this year but I feel like my fellow Schmoes picked an amazing group this year in the categories. Sicario was solid and so was Ex Machina. I'm just disappointed that no action scene from Mission Impossible made it into the category for Best. I felt the bike chase and even the opera house scene from MI:RN was better than the Bear Attack and Border Crossing Shootout which were memorable but not for the action.

FURY ROAD sucked. It was boring and the story was idiotic.

Fury Road had good actions scenes, that's it. Even those got boring though because its all the movie did was a stupid chase scene with over the top action segments. There was no story, the acting was bad, there were so many pointless things about it. It wasn't that good.

And judging by the best supporting actor field, I didn't realize how close the race is in this year's competition; out of all of my personal picks, only one actually got nominated (Del Toro).

I'm not that surprised. I really disliked the Steve Jobs movie. I think it's a screenplay and by extension a movie that completely misunderstood it's subject and what story it needed to tell to capture the essence/spirit of the person they were telling a story about. The story of Steve Jobs should not have been one of redemption, it's the story of one man's drive to create something that is bigger than himself, bigger than any one person.

I haven't seen Creed, so my battle is between Del Toro and Goggins.

Pretty good choices this year. Sad about the fact Idris Elba got snubbed here too. Also, why is there not a male version of T&A? It's 2016..time for you guys to get with the time.

miguel... this is 2016, 60% of the male population is overweight. More men have tits than those who don't.

So you would nominate overweight guys for the best male T&A category? :P

Like who, Jonah Hill and Meatloaf?

Just for the record, our T&A category is for votes either MALE or FEMALE. It just so happens that a majority of our audience are heterosexual males, hence more votes for ze ladies.... ;)

Which is why I think there should be one for males next year. Give the girls (and gays) fans a category they can vote in. Hell even the movie hotties section of the site never really have anything on guys.

Even T&A is a female/male category (thanks for the clarification Mr. Joblo) it doesn't seem like it, because of the NAME of the category. I would say that it does need a separate category and you will be surprised of how many nomination it will get. We on MFC have two contest every year: "Sexiest Woman Alive" and "Sexiest Man Alive" with endless subcategories, despite that most of the users are men, we get a lot of participation and votes, it doesn't matter the sexual tendency, yes is 2016.

Good crop

So glad to see What We Do in the Shadows scored a nomination! But no love for Cop Car or Dope! There should be a category "Best Movie That Nobody Ever Saw"
Could throw The End of the Tour in there as well. Jason Segel brought his A-game there.
