The T&A fest begins! Piranha 3DD starts production

Apr. 25, 2011by: Niki Stephens

It has begun!

PIRANHA 3DD (3 double D), the sequel to Alexandre Aja's 2010 film has started production. Well, sans Aja. The man behind the camera will be John Gulager (FEAST).

Here's the short and sweet press release:

"After earning rave reviews from top critics and wild cheers from audiences around the country, Dimension Films has started production on the sequel to PIRANHA 3D."

"Principal photography is now underway in Wilmington, NC on PIRANHA 3DD, being directed by John Gulager (FEAST)."

"Theres something in the water . . . again. And this time no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of the best summer attraction, The Big Wet Water Park."

"Featuring a talented ensemble cast including Danielle Panabaker (THE CRAZIES), Matt Bush (ADVENTURELAND), Chris Zylka (THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN), David Koechner (ANCHORMAN), Meagan Tandy (UNSTOPPABLE), Paul James Jordan, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez, Clu Gulager and more cast to be announced soon."

"PIRANHA 3DD is a Dimension Films release, produced by Mark Canton, Marc Toberoff and Joel Soisson. Executive producer Chako van Leeuwen; Co-Produced by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg."

"PIRANHA 3DD shows its teeth in theatres nationwide on November 23, 2011. The feast is on this Thanksgiving."

I really, really enjoyed PIRANHA 3D, but not so sure about this one. Can't wait to see a trailer though! David Koechner is sure to be amusing.

Extra Tidbit: Originally I didn't think I would like PIRANHA 3d and ended up really loving it. Anyone else experience something similar? Or perhaps the opposite?

Matt Bush is in this? I think that kid is great.

Gulager on the other hand, is not great. Aside from Henry Rollins, I did not enjoy Feast so I skipped the sequels. The Project Greenlight season leading up to Feast was way more entertaining than the actual movie.

Aja had a story already (almost) written for a sequel (set in Asia) but the W. Bros went the other way, looking for a Director they can manipulate more easily !
And the action taking place in a Park ? I've got a bad JAWS 3 feeling about it !

Meh, first one was a fun film, but I can't really see it warranting a sequel. This could be fun, but if it's more of the same, it'll probably come out as inferior. Also, no Kelly Brooke, and she was like a fourth of the reason I went to see the first film.

Extra tidbit: I'm the opposite, boobs and gore do not mesh for me. It's way hard to spank it to a movie where the chick ends up dead. That is one horror cliche I have never understood, if an extremely attractive woman is cool enough to let you see her naked why would I want to see her grotesquely murdered a couple of scenes later?

Never understood spanking it to a movie when you've got a whole wide world of internet porn at your fingertips.

No one directs gore quite like Aja. I assume this will end up just like the sequel to his Hills Have Eyes remake. Shitty.

As much I loved the first one (well, the remake from Aja that is) I'm not convinced that I'm excited at all for this sequel... I think it's mostly because John Gulager did such a HORRIBLE!!!! job on Feast 2 and 3. Although the first Feast was pretty awesome...
God, too confusing, don't know what to make of this news. And November 2011? That's really enough time to make this? like 6 months!? I just hope Piranha 3DD is as surprisingly good as the first one!

Depends

It could go either one. Most of Dimension Films' sequels have a negative track record (Mimic, From Dusk Till Dawn, Feast, etc).

Loved the original and thought it was a great blast and a great way to spend a couple of hours.

I like the story of the sequel taking place at a waterpark and the diverse cast (especially Panabaker and Koechner). Would love to see Lloyd reprise his role again since he was one of the best parts of the original.

This is going to be one hell of a fun sequel.

I loved Piranha 3d i thought it was a great time in the movies! i laughed the whole way through. im not positive this NEEDS a sequel tho. Btw isnt it kind of weird that this movie did not even make that much money yet its warranting a sequel? What does it take to get a sequel these days now?

Nope. This crap got my money the first time around and it was honestly THE worst movie that I've spent cash on this century. Never again.

What was so bad about the first one?

You were walking in a movie called Piranha 3D, what were you expecting??? But to each is own.

All due love to Gulager and Koechner but...

The first one was great because it was in the hands of a legit horror master, had a huge cast of mainstream actors and 'huger' cast of pornstars, and well...no one was expecting it to be good. Not the same gravitas in cast sofar...But if they cast Sophie Dee, maybe it'll get my 13 bucks.

Feast is phenomenal. I was already pumped for this but if THAT guy is directing, I'm really pumped!

"Piranha 3D" didn't even work on a 'dumb fun' level.

Meh.

It wasn't as fun as I wanted it to be. I mean I'm not going to complain about Kelly in a bikini for an hour an a half, but when I'm actually hoping for more hammy fun times with Christopher Lloyd than blood or boobs...it's probably a good time to admit I'm getting too old for the genre.

There are two things that I like about Piranha 3D: the underwater scene of Riley Steele & Kelly Brook and the whole 3rd act where piranhas wreak havoc. Overall it was a fun ride.
