Two X-men from the franchise's past have joined X-Men: Days of Future Past!

Nov. 27, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

X-Men: First Class lineup

In a development that some of you may have expected all along considering the storyline being used for the film (or your interpretation of a certain smile/statement given by a certain Englishman at a certain Apple store) Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen have formally and officially joined the Bryan Singer-directed X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

Which just shot the film straight up my list of most anticipated comic book films of the foreseeable future.

The film, from a script by Simon Kinberg (SHERLOCK HOLMES, EPISODE VIII/IX), boasts inspiration from a pair of 1981 Uncanny X-Men issues (#141 and #142) that dealt with an alternate future sprung from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' killing of a Senator, one wherein all mutants are either in internment camps or hunted down by massive robots known as Sentinels.  Kitty Pryde sends her mind back in time to warn her fellow X-Men of the danger, and thus a struggle against time to stave off a terrible future for the world is born.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST brings X-Men past and present back to cinemas on June 18th, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Presumably the "more to come" in Singer's second tweet refers to Logan at the very least, as he's been in every X-Men film thus far. But are there any others that you'd want to see return?

I will watch this film and enjoy it with the mindset that x-men origins wolverine and X3 never, ever existed, also, wolverine does not have to be in this movie, he was in first class for a few seconds and i still love it. I want to see new characters show up and join the team not the members from the original trilogy, you can have younger versions like cyclops or jean, hell maybe even storm but please Mr. Singer do not start throwing in Anna Famke or whoever else just because they were your

Sounds great. Also, Wolverine - not required. If there was ever a more overblown, oversaturated character, it's Wolverine. Don't get me wrong, I like him and I'm excited for his new flick, but he's just not needed in every single X-Men film. First Class might be my favorite flick, and he (basically) wasn't in it. I'd say Cyclops is ten times more essential to an X-Men movie than Wolverine. Unfortunately, the studios don't agree.

Actually, he had a small cameo appearance. When Xavier and Erik were searching for other mutants, they came upon Logan at a bar and he basically told them to eff off.

I agree with your point of Cyclops needing to be a stronger character. In fact, they should have started off with the original group of X-Men, and gone from there.

Love me some SirPatStew and IM118...

Those guys were the best, as long as they are meant to look old and there is no digital facial shit going on.

On a different note, I have a ton of respect for Patrick Stewart (and even Mayor Adam West) for being open to comedy such as American Dad and Family Guy where they make complete fools of themselves. He seems like the real deal good guy that people overlook and typecast.

For Days Of Future...

(Past, Present, and Future) are all story lines, within the X-Men universe.

Of course having Page reprise her role as Pride would be essential at this point, and of course it wouldn't be an efficient story without Jackman's, Wolverine. However, given the era that the story was written, I think we need strong presence from the other characters, of Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, as well as Angel (should be Archangel in this story). Of course the story should also have Destiny, Pyro, Avalanche,

Of course the story should also have Destiny, Pyro, Avalanche, and Blob (all are relatively minor characters per se, albeit, still a part of the picture). Throwing in Longshot & Dazzler would be a bonus extra too, since they came around shortly after that era (with them, a potential opening to the Mojoverse is possible for a future movie).

Gotta have Wolvie

Really enjoyed First Class and with the direction this one is headed you can finally sorta ignore the jumbled up timeline to begin with and yeah, it is essential to have Logan maybe make more than a cameo in this one...

If Jackman isnt back as Wolverine Im honestly not interested at this point. With the Wolverine franchise continuing with what I hope is a good film, and expect to be, with THE WOLVERINE, ignoring the character, especially with the others back, will seem so odd and distracting.

Awesome.

Spoiler(?)
So are they ignoring X-Men 3 where they killed off Professor X? Or will the time travel address that? If so, bring back Cyclopse and Jean Grey too.

Marvel is known for having different 'Earth's', similar to DC, known overall as the Multiverse. Plausibly consider X-Men 3, as one of those other Earth's, and enjoy the story moving forward.

One could even say that the universe within Fox studios stable is separate from the universe within Marvel/Disney's stable. Regardless, they still fall under the same umbrella of Multiverse.

Erase the events of X3

Since this film involves changing the future they should make it that the events in the horrible X3 never took place.

The only way to make it work is to take the Star Trek route with the story because the continuity between the original films and First Class is almost non-existant.

This movie just got much more exciting. I wonder if Ellen Page will reprise her role as future Kitty.

I think it's cool, but my only issue is that I like what they did with the whole time period issue. I also liked that the film was separate from the original trilogy. First Class and the original three were distinct from each other, and I liked that. I would like to see Future Past keep that up, but I am afraid that bringing McKellen and Steward back will give us more of the original trilogy and less of First Class, which I thought was the best of the entire X-Men franchise (and yes, I loved

PAT AND IAN!!!! HELL YEAH!!

I was a bit skeptical about the First Class sequel being Days of Future Past. But if Stewart and McKellen trust Singer's vision, then I'm on board!!! Now let's get Ellen Page back as Kitty Pryde!!!
