Warner Bros wants David Ayer to direct the DC Comics movie Suicide Squad

Looks like we now have confirmation on another one of the planned DC Cinematic Universe releases between now and 2020 as Variety has learned that Warner Bros wants FURY director David Ayer to helm SUICIDE SQUAD.

While there is no confirmation from Ayer or the studio, the source makes it sound like the END OF WATCH and SABOTAGE filmmaker would be their ideal fit for the “dark and edgy” take on SUICIDE SQUAD. Currently, Justin Marks (THE JUNGLE BOOK, TOP GUN 2) is scripting SUICIDE SQUAD. Dan Lin is set as producer. There is no word on potential stars for the film or even which version of the squad would appear on screen.

The most common members of the Suicide Squad have been Bronze Tiger, Captain Boomerang, and Deadshot, but recent incarnations have included King Shark and Harley Quinn. The group has always been assembled with incarcerated supervillians who undertake deadly black ops (aka suicide) missions on behalf of the government or defense agency A.R.G.U.S. to reduce their sentences. The team recently was featured during the second season of ARROW, but it appears the DC Cinematic Universe will be distinct from the small screen one.

David Ayer has proven he has a great eye for gritty crime in both action and dramatic settings. His World War II film FURY looks top notch. The fact that DC is aiming for something along the lines of his prior films for this take on the villainous team definitely bodes well for where they are taking their collective universe. Hopefully this goes from rumor to reality very soon.
