What did you think of...The Amazing Spider-Man?

07.09.2012

Nobody was really expecting all that much from the Spider-Man reboot when it was announced a couple of years ago, especially since it would be released only 5 years after the end of the "original trilogy", but the inspired choice of 500 DAYS OF SUMMER director Marc Webb was a good first step, as were most of the casting announcements, but it wasn't until we posted our own 2 very positive reviews of the film (Chirs Bumbray gave it a 9/10 HERE, and JimmyO gave it a 8/10 HERE) that I really believed that the movie could actually be good!

Our own Eric Walkuski was also lucky enough to sit down for interviews with most of the cast from the film (two of whom seemed to dig our site's name...it's not a porn site, people!), all of which you can check out below. But at this point, it's time for you to POST YOUR OWN REVIEWS in our strike back section (or to your MFC profile) and we'll continue to update the Rotten Tomatoes and Movie Fan Central reviews over the next few days as well. All that said, after a very successful weekend box-office haul and mostly positive reviews, it looks like a new Spider-Man trilogy has just begun...

INTERVIEWS: Andrew Garfield / Emma Stone / Podcast interview with director Marc Webb / Rhys Ifans (aka The Lizard) / Martin Sheen / Denis Leary

Rotten Tomatoes: 236 reviews, avg score: 73%
Movie Fan Central
: 23 reviews, avg score: 7.3/10

It was not twilight in tights you jackass!!! This was a story about a resourceful and smart spiderman that uses detective skills to track down and defeat his enemy. It does not copy batman it draws characteristics from recent spiderman incarnations where the character was not afraid to tell people his secret and he actually used strategy in fighting bad guys.

finally saw it today, much better than expected, can't say which version is better really, Lizard's motive was a lil too similar to Batman Begins, Garfield did a good job as Peter & Emma Stone was great as Gwen & i agree with reviews that the chemistry was great.

I don't care what anybody says...

I loved this movie. This is one of the only movies as far as I can remember where I heard it was being made and had no interest, saw the first trailer, still had no interest, saw a second trailer and thought, "Oh well, not for me," heard good word of mouth and thought, "hmmm...maybe." Then, out of nowhere without seeing anything new, I started getting excited. I saw it last night and I loved it. Was it perfect? No. There was some bad CGI, some bad dialog and that GOD AWFUL crane scene!!

No. There was some bad CGI, some bad dialog and that GOD AWFUL crane scene!! When you add that all up it was about 5-8 minutes that didn't really work but the other 2 hours, I loved!! I would rate this movie an A-. I thought this cast was much more inspired. I liked this movie better than all the other Spider-Man movies and I am looking forward to the sequels.

Was this movie balls to wall action? No, but I really appreciated that. This was a great character piece where we really get to know the characters. Actually, I heard that this movie was very boring, so I was VERY surprised with as much action as there was. Actually, I feel that the best comic book movies are the one that build up the characters first (Batman Begins, The Avengers, etc).

I wouldn't say that this is better than the Batman movies, it's not better than the Avengers, it's not better than Iron Man...but it's better than the original trilogy and I am happy they went this route rather than making Spider-Man 4.

My grade = A- (borderline B+)

Meh

I went in expecting mixed expectations. This has had some of the least impressive trailers in awhile, but I love the cast/ director, and the two very positive reviews helped push me just over to the 'good' side (but still close to the edge). After seeing it, it's not as bad as the trailers (and the probably true rumors of reshoots) seem to indicate, but nowhere near as good as I have heard from everyone else. To say much more be to give a lot of spoilers. A full review is on the way, but in

Loved It

I am a huge fan of the original trilogy and own all the films, even the abysmal Spider-Man 3. I found this film to be much better than the original Spider-Man. Peter Parker is someone I can actually picture in high school and we see him as more of an outcast in an emotional way. The way he keeps to himself. At least in the original Peter Parker had Harry Osborn as someone to entrust in. I liked how they introduced the original web shooters as it shows us a Peter that is resourceful and puts his

At least in the original Peter Parker had Harry Osborn as someone to entrust in. I liked how they introduced the original web shooters as it shows us a Peter that is resourceful and puts his genius to skill. The suit seems more like a suit that Peter himself would make and not the perfectly detailed costume of the original. Its similar to Batman's costume in the new films that is made from cave diving suits. The cast was much better and Martin Sheen grabs you into the film emotionally. While this films didn't have as much action as the previous one, I liked how personal they kept it and enjoyed how the action revolved around the plot, not the other way around. People will have their opinions but I felt the score by James Horner was amazing and suit the film. It felt more epic and on the scale of a super hero as important as Spider-Man. I mean it made most of the scenes in the film! Like most people Ill agree that perhaps the weakest part of the movie was the Lizard but I still think Rhys Ifans did a great job as Dr. Connors and wasn't just a evil but sympathetic villain. As bad as the Lizard was I still felt he was shown better than the Green Goblin (doesn't even come close to Doctor Octopus) in that stupid power rangers suit. Overall the film isn't as great as the Avengers (9/10) but it still good on its own. It provides a more grounded super hero film that is a nice change once in a while. Not everything has to be aliens and gods and Hulk like the Avengers. Amazing Spiderman is just a movie about a high school teen who wishes to be better. 8/10 from me. I give the original a 6/10.

I LOVED IT!!!! I actually prefered it to the Avengers overall as a FILM and I had more fleshed out characters and a more intriguing plot for the Hero. I liked this turn better than all the McGuire movies as I am not a fan of campy execution. I watched Spiderman 2 and it was goofy. Plot was brilliant, but the animation etc was weak as well as the plot holes. This new movie had some drab moments as it retread where i wish it didn't. It could have kicked off into him being Spiderman and

It could have kicked off into him being Spiderman and narrating the movie like he does in the comics where he tells his own events like a journalist, but alas it wasn't as so, but the actual casting was better for the titular hero as well as the execution of style the film went with. it wasn't BRILLIANT as it dragged on weak parts and skipped around on the most important like how he functions as a human/spider, but overall it was a fun ride and I enjoyed the cgi moments as well as the creative sewer web idea etc. A lot more "spider" like activity in this and a better FILM overall than the previous franchise. It could have been better, but it was Great fun regardless. I'm just a sucker for psychological type films compared to dazzling ones

It was a good movie, just not as good as Raimi's version. Raimi's felt more like the classic spider-man I knew, whereas this film tries hard to be different.
The Good: relationship between Peter and Gwen, the cast, Webb's directing, and the fight scenes between Lizard and Spiderman were cool.
The Bad: The suit (looked ok at sometime and weird at others), the score (Elfman's was much better), and I was bored the first half from seeing the origin story again.

Garbage

Yes Spider-man 3 was garbage and anything would be better, but to put this in the same sentence or even book as Spider-man 2 is just stupid.

Bad

The fact that pretty much anyone could become Spidey by walking past the shitty security at Oscorp and getting bitten by one of the spiders in that room, removed the uniqueness of Spidey as a hero. Yeah, I know about the hints that Peter's parents may have fucked with his genetics, but 1. that was removed at the studio's request (hence the reshoots two months before the opening) and 2. the same plot was hated by audiences when it was done in Ang Lee's Hulk.

Also, this Spidey was no hero, he was cleaning up the mess he created in the first place. A hero is someone that does a selfless act for someone else, and doesn't expect anything in return. Since Peter created the problem(s) (the Lizard, Uncle Ben's death) by being a selfish prick, he's no hero for doing the adult thing of trying to fix the problems he created in the first place.

In regards to anyone becoming Spider-Man, how is this one any different from the original? Anyone in that stupid science building could have been bitten by that spider. What was stopping it from biting more people afterwards and creating many Spider-Men? At least in this one it was brought upon my his curiosity and exploration of Oscorp. And if they pursue the genetic thing in the future it would actually solve your issue and make it so that only Peter can in fact become Spider-Man.

Peter was always responsible for Uncle Ben's death...........He may have created the lizard, but his intentions were good..all heroes' get their start somewhere.

Since Raimi followed the comic book version of the spider bite...in the comic, the spider crawled away and died. Pretty much anyone that knows Spidey's comic book history knows this as well. It didn't have to be explained...except to the newbies, maybe.

Having Peter being 'destined' to become Spidey from birth by genetic tampering, takes away his 'every man'
status that appealed to everyone in the first place. Basically, if the story isn't broke, don't try to add extraneous crap to it to

Raimi had one spider, while Webb had dozens of the same spider.

Not sure why...

...but I still think Raimi's trilogy had that special something in it. Okay, forget Spider-Man 3, that shit was awful. Spider-Man 1 and 2 had a certain quality to it that's missing in this one. Tobey's Spider-Man was more "heroic", for lack of a better term. The previous films had a certain lightheartedness to it, yet were grand action-packed spectacles. I'm not saying Amazing Spider-Man isn't good because I actually think it's great, but upon second viewing I can't help but miss Raimi's style

The only thing I don't miss is Mary Jane. Maybe I'm just being a nostalgic sap, but give me Spider-Man 2 any day of the week and Amazing Spider-Man on alternate Sundays, maybe.

Good, But not great...

I agree with this: It was a decent movie, when compared to the first film they did a lot of things better, but it wasn't perfect. I think it missed some of the heart from Raimi's films to be honest. Finally!

It had the magic that I think the original Raimi films did not have. I like to comparison to Tim Burton and Batman and Raimi and Spiderman. This new movie had really good character development and good writing; the icing on the cake was the pacing and how slick and streamlined the movie felt and looked. Its the spiderman I always wanted to see. You always knew what to expect from the first three Raimi movies, I did not get that sense from this new movie. I wasn't floored like seeing Batman

I found it to be on par with Raimi's first SM film in that they were both underwhelming. TASM handles itself without a sense of epic scale. Uncle Ben's death, Peter discovering his powers, The Lizard's reveal, Peter telling Gwen he's Spider-Man, Stacy finding out Spider-Man is Peter, these are all scenes that should have resonated, but instead they seem to just happen without any reason or consequence. As soon as Peter becomes Spider-Man the film seems in a rush to meet it's climax. The

As soon as Peter becomes Spider-Man the film seems in a rush to meet it's climax. The movie could have benefitted by losing a few scenes of Peter crying and maybe adding a little more development to The Lizard or Captain Stacy.

It sounds like I'm being super negative and hate the movie, but I don't. It was enjoyable and definitely had better action and spectacle than Raimi's first movie. In fact, I don't remember a single action set piece from SM1 except for, vaguely, Spider-Man's final throwdown with the Green Goblin. But I know the scene of Spider-Man fighting the Lizard in the school will stay with me for a while.

Not good, not bad

My first reaction after walking out of the theaters: well, at least it was better than spider-man 3. The casting was much better this time around, especially garfield as our hero and emma stone as gwen stacy. The story had the POTENTIAL to go places, but it just felt edited and spliced together at the last second (a LITTLE bit like how Clash of the Titans came across after seeing it. These articles go into that issue alott more in depth, and well worth a read: [link] and [link]. But besides

But besides the cheesy, convenient plot lines like that crane scene or blatant unrealistic scenes such as parker displaying his powers for his entire school to see, the thing that got to me most was how Parker acted, from an emotional standpoint. After becoming responsible for his uncle's death, he shows almost no guilt at all. Sure he becomes alot more sad and moody, but i would've pictured him throwing himself at his aunt's feet, begging for forgiveness. I felt like Raimi's spider-man showed his guilt much better. In this movie, Parker just treats Aunt May even worse and acts more like a jerk. But, like those articles suggest, perhaps they're saving some signature moments for the next two movies

I liked it.

I for one am happy that the story is unknown. I have read the comics and know that part of Spidy. I am happy with a new direction for the movie. On that note, when Peter has his costume on keep the damn thing on. He was without his mask running around in costume as much as he had it on. I know its Garfield under there I do not need to see face time with the fucking actor. Great flick

It was nice to finally see Spider-Man on the big screen.

I appreciate Raimi's versions, just as I appreciate Tim Burton's Batman flicks. I loved them as a kid, and as soon as I grew up I couldn't watch either without cringing a little. Comic book doesn't equal "hokey," something Tim Burton and Raimi don't understand. I'd argue that this flick had the most comic-book feeling plot of all of them (the Lizard's master plan), and yet felt the most grounded. The charater interaction was great, and

The charater interaction was great, and like any good Spidey comic, was the best part. Any real Spider-Man fan knows that his book has always lived and died on the supporting characters and the everyday problems of Peter Parker, and I thought they captured that fantastically. I loved the handling of Flash - instead of just being the asshole jock, he actually had facets to his personality and a fanboy love of Spidey.

And as for "angry Peter Parker" that I keep hearing about, Peter Parker was ALWAYS angry. Spider-Man is known for two things: quips, and incredible rage when his loved ones are threatened. Both were captured far better than weepy-faced Tobey Maguire ever did.

I agree the villain wasn't given enough time to shine, but here's the deal: Spider-Man was always about Spider-Man, not the villains. Lizard in particularly was always kind of a lame villain (a semi-mindless were-lizard, basically). I like the focus on the hero as opposed to the Batmanesque "villains-first" angle.

Fun movie, and the most accurate Spider-Man depiction to date.

No girls screamed directly into the camera: that was nice too.

loved it.

Sure, not every moment worked for me, but overall I thought it was awesome. I'm a huge Spidey fan and enjoyed the original trilogy to a certain extent. Re-watching those films recently however I was struck by just how incredibly cheesy some of the dialogue was! Tobey Maguire came off as overly sappy and whiney every single time he spoke to MJ or Aunt May. I appreciated Garfield's portrayal a bit more, although he really wasn't geeky enough.

And to those who complain about him taking off his mask too often in this movie...watch the old ones again, he did it just as freakin often so give me a break. I seem to remember a certain train scene in which he inexplicably went crowd surfing mask-less.

I also loved that for once he didn't have to save his love interest at the end of the film! So refreshing! And they didn't kill off the villain which is great for potential story lines in the future.

I can't agree more. I recently too watched the original Spiderman movies(try it and see what I mean) and found everything from the costumes to the characters way cheesy. I was on the fence when i first saw the spiderman costume, but go online and compare the two and it will all make sense. On its own, it was really good. The story could have been weaved with more twists and turns and unknowns for the future but hopefully we will get more cool stuff for the sequels; it be nice if they just

That will be key, not to be scared to dig deep into the story and characters and pull out fresh ideas and not just base everything off of one bad guy we all know spidey will beat.

I liked it

I liked it better than the Raimi versions...all three...as well. Though I don't think it was a great movie at all. It was entertaining, and I liked the villain but not a spectacular film by any means.

Flawed but fun.

I think the main reason I like this reboot better than Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man movie is because Raimi and Maguire's Peter Parker never really clicked on me. Garfield captured the energy and wit of the well established comic book character as well as a few hint of Ultimate Spider-Man. This film took the Batman Begins approach of getting people to know their main characters first before all the superhero fantasy stuff come in. Did it work? Well, to some degree it worked amazingly. The viewers were there alongside Peter Parker in his journey to become the hero he's destined to be. We get to care about Peter's loss. We get to care about Uncle Ben's death. We get to care about Aunt May, Flash Thompson, and of course we get to care about Gwen. It's not until the transition between teen drama to superhero action that Amazing Spider-Man trip and stumble and drag itself along to its intended, predictable, heavily foreshadowed climax. Yet, I'm giving this movie a thumbs up because it managed to stay away from Raimi's God-awful damsel in distress routine and actually made Spider-Man a fun kid in leotard for once, instead of the forever alone-ish doofus that Tobey Maguire have played him as three films in a row.

I don't get the love for this movie at all

There were just as many flaws as there were in the original series, in fact there may be more. Does everybody need to know Peter Parker is spiderman? The Lizard , Gwen Stacy , Captain Stacy, and most likely Aunt May even though they leave that one unsaid. He showed his powers in a train full of people, to a basketball court full of teenagers, and a football field full of football players. The basketball and football scenes where the worst of the entire series. Are you telling me nobody would

At least when Clark Kent kicked the football in the original Superman he was all alone. This guy does it in front of numerous witnesses.

Peter Parker was also a complete douche in this movie. Why make him a sassy skateboarding teenager? The whole point of him being a smart-ass when he is spider-man is because he feels free to let out a side of his personality he does not show as Peter Parker. In this movie he is the same as Peter Parker and as Spider-man.

The Villain is not very good since you don't even get to know Curt Connors and he's definitely not the Curt Connors from the comics or the cartoons or any other place I've ever seen The Lizard. The Lizard story is rushed since they spend half the movie retelling the same origin story that was already told 10 years ago. Say what you want about The Raimi films, but at least he had a love for Spider-Man. Marc Webb was just collecting a check and trying to move up on the ladder with the studio. He's did a good job with the casting and the acting is better then it was in the Raimi movies, but everything else is all wrong.

I sort of agree with you on the Lizard, did feel rushed, wasn't as emotional as I liked it to be. However..No one seemed to complain with how drastically they changed Doctor Octopus. He wasn't even a villain, the tentacles were the villain as they controlled him! Otherwise he was a pretty nice guy. Also, green goblin looked like a power ranger reject. and sandman said he didn't want to hurt anybody, and Venom..well, I don't even want to touch that one.

@markgrayson- Your right Doc Ock was not the Doc Ock of the comics who is more of an evil genius mastermind type then he was in Spider-Man 2. With that said, at least we got to know the Doc Ock of the movie, who the hell was the Lizard? They basically threw him in and gave you a completely minimal back story. I don't even remember if they said how he lost his arm in the first place. Was he born like that? Did he lose it in the war like the Curt Connors of the comics? What the hell was his

Basically, they gave us some bs about him being friends with Richard Parker and alluded that he knew about Parker plane crash and absolutely nothing else. He literally just turns evil immediately after taking the serum and is still evil when he's not the Lizard. the worst part is he all of a sudden becomes a nice guy at the end after being hit with the antidote. Really? What the hell was that? His character was underwritten and just came off as a generic movie villain so we could see some fight scenes at some point in the movie. Even though the Goblin looked nothing like the Goblin of the comics at least we understood who he was. This movie is the worst kind of cash grab and it's a shame that so many people took the bait, including myself.

not the popular opinion but...

I really really liked it.
As someone who grew up with a darker Spider-Man (i.e., anything not in the 60s), the camp and the bouts of goofiness turned me off of the original three. And no, I am not simply referring to Spider-Man 3. All of them had moments like that. I just chalked that up to Sam Raimi and let it slide. The comedy felt more organic in this one. We had a wisecracking Peter who you could still tell was broken inside.
That was the point I felt, this was more character driven. In

That was the point I felt, this was more character driven. In my local newspaper they said this movie had far too little action for a summer blockbuster. But to me, that reviewer wholly missed the point. This movie was about relationships and people - not about spectacle. It wasn't a Transformers movie after all.
And in that way, it worked immensely for me. I was more excited for the character interactions than the action sequences, and so it paid off.
This movie took the unique (although it should be common) approach to movie making where it was serious, mature, but not overly dark (the term dark gets thrown around far too much).
Based on what others are writing, I seem to be in the minority here.

Where was the relationship between Connors and Peter? Peter only acted as a catalyst to turn Connors into Lizard. Everything fell too perfectly into place. Peter finds the formula, Ben tells peter he does not know Connors, 5 minutes later he tells him he did know Connors. Peter give Connors the formula, Connors turns evil as the lizard. The romance was even forced with the worst dialogue since Juno. "I liked kissing you". "Promises you can't keep are the best kinds to make" it is pretentious

The film deserved a better script and villain. It needed a human antagonist and made Spider-man look more like a pansy than Raimi did. Why was someone crying ever 10 minutes? The drama was forced. Spider-man is NOT supposed to be this dark, it wasn't even dark, they just forgot to buy enough light bulbs to fill up the sound stages. It was a bad movie, why can't people accept that?

Sucked

Come on, this movie had a horrible villain, a bad script and a director who thought he was making a romcom. The only good thing about this movie was Denis Leary was in it. They lacked a real human antagonist as well. Stop comparing it to Raimi, this movie will not age well. I think on second viewing of this a lot of people who liked it will realize it is nothing special. It lacked comedy, drama and EVERYONE was a crying bitch, Someone cried once every 10 minutes. It felt rushed, and was boring.

Oh come on with the Rom Com bologna. Did you enjoy the countless lovey dovey Peter and MJ scenes in the originals as well as the pointless MJ doing theater scenes that were torturous to watch? Go back and watch the others, see how "well" they have aged and count how many times Peter cries.

Not Great

But a very entertaining flick with very strong leads and an awesome climax. Preferred this incarnation to the Sam Raimi one to be honest, especially with the whole tone of the movie and the relationship between Peter and Gwen. Garfield and Stone pretty much hit it out of the park with this, amazing chemistry and a real pleasure watching them on screen together.

Ultimately nothing great, but a very competent comic book movie with limitless potential for future sequels. I'm sure i'll forget

Entertaining mess

I re-watched the trilogy just after seeing The Amazing Spider-man, and I realized that what the new movie lacks is the light and fun. It feels so heavy and dark, even with the occasional jokes. The mood is really depressing.
It tries too much to be down-to-earth when it should be more epic and spectacular. The actors are excellent, but I don't understand how people can say that Garfield's portrayal of Peter is truer than Maguire's. I like Garfield' Peter. He's a cool dude, but Stan Lee's Peter

He's a cool dude, but Stan Lee's Peter Parker wasn't cool. The new Peter is much more like Bendis's Ultimate Spider-man. That's cool too, but don't come to me and spit on Raimi's Spider-man, because they had everything perfectly right the first time around, regarding mood and characters. The only aspect missing from Raimi's Spidey was the loud mouth during fights, even if there are some.
Also TASM goes the Prometheus way of asking questions without answering any. The Lizard is mishandled : I couldn't care less about Conners.
The movie is still entertaining and isn't bad. But it feels like déjà-vu and at the same time the changes feel forced for the sake of being different from the original. Weird feeling. The main problem is the script. The rest is good, even if Webb's direction lacks the epic style the character needs. No amazement here. I've heard that the movie got botchered in the editing room so maybe the script had more to offer than the finished product.
The movie tries to be different from Raimi's movies and at the same time to stay true to the character. It succeeds and fails at the same time, and it ends up being this entertaining but depressing and schizophrenic movie, which doesn't really know where it's going.

Yeah it was good, felt this is the movie we should have had ten years ago. Garfield makes a much better Spidey/Parker than that other douche; I just think they've made Parker a lot more how I imagine him to be, rather than the looser buffoon of the Raimi trilogy.

It did feel really slow going through all the origin again though, I was impatient for him to be Spider-Man already. Hopefully now all this is out of the way they can really get down to business in the sequel.

Positives - smashing cast, Stone and Garfield were great together, and I love her boots. Loved the first person shots. Music was top notch, classic Horner. Couple of good battle scenes, but the action does take the back seat to the emotion. Good humour in it, nice to see Spidey having some witty quips which was something sorely missing from the Raimi ones.

Negatives - parker cries a lot, hopefully this is all over with now. The crane scene was utterly cringe. Thought the Lizard was a little weak, his CGI a little dodge from time to time.

Does anyone else wish they would make the Stan Lee cameo's not so in your face? Massive respect to the guy as it's down to him that we have all these great characters, but I preferred it when you had a 'blink and you miss it' Hitchcock style cameo, thinking of Spidey 2 as a good example. It just takes me totally out of the movie to see him too much, as I'm not looking at an amiable doddery librarian but I'm looking at Stan Lee, and it drags me straight back into the real world.

Rant aside, a solid and fun movie that promises much for the future - 7 out of 10 for me.

Like a said before, the chemistry between Garfield and Stone was as great as the soundtrack by Mr. Horner. The death of uncle Ben was too forced imo eventhough Garfield's reaction to it was ok. In general it was an ''ok'' movie, considering why Sony wanted to make it in the first place. Never cared about Dr. Connors and when he was transformed into The Lizard i never felt like Spiderman's life was in real danger (Unlike Dr. Octopus and even Green Goblin). Artificial web was great, but the swinging scenes were boring. After watching the original trilogy, i have to say that even Spidey 3 has better moments than this one (born of the Sandman is fucking fantastic, and the fight scenes were increible). Nice try, but not good enough.

As a stand-alone Spider-Man film I thoroughly enjoyed it. Peter and Gwen had genuine chemistry, Aunt May and Uncle Ben were excellent and I liked the Flash storyline too. Marc Webb did a fine job and some beautiful photography of NYC.

Although Rhys Ifans as Connors wasn’t explored enough, the character could have done with more background and Denis Leary was underused.
It also annoyed me a bit that Spider-Man kept taking off the mask.
But overall I got a kick out of it and it was a fun

I had an absolute blast with the movie. I'm a huge Spidey fan. So when it was first announced that they were rebooting the franchise, I was somewhat taken aback. However, I was also open to a new direction. After seeing the finished product, I am officially won over. Spider-Man 2 will always be the best but this came a close second. I thoroughly enjoyed it through and through. It's a great movie and I can't wait to check it out again!

I feel the main plot is Peter and Gwen and how Peter accepts his role in life as Spiderman. The Lizard being more of an enhancer of that plot rather than its own separate story.

It far surpassed my expectations, so at the time I mistook that feeling of "it's better than I thought it would be" for "it's absolutely terrific". It's certainly a good movie. There are issues with it, as there are issues with anything, but for me it got a lot right. Spider-Man 2 still wears the crown.

I really enjoyed the movie the first time around. Upon a second viewing, a lot of plotholes became evident, and you start to see all the tiny things that MAY make Garfield's Spider-Man inferior to Tobey's. The Lizard was wasted with bad CGI and a goofy-looking face, which is such a shame because Connors (in human form) is a very likable character. I personally think it's a cool new take on Spider-Man and I'd like to see Venom get his due this time around. That being said, Spider-Man 2 is still

Thought it was okay

I liked it (I like anything Spider-Man) but it did have problems. One was the obvious effort to make it like Twilight. Another was the first half was really just dull. Loved the Lizard though, and I appreciated the love interest being someone smart like Gwen, and not bitchy and oblivious like Mary Jane.

It was pretty good--seems like the movie was better suited to the emotional moments. There were no real great action set pieces like in the first trilogy.
It has set a good groundwork for future films though.

I liked it, and I do not want to compare to Raimis version. That was that, and this is this. I like to start with a fresh take on it. It was funnier, had great action, and good actors for the right roles. However, I did not like the writing or the CGI. The cgi just looked too weird to me. The writing, didn't seem clever. All of it was really rushed, but I can see why, considering no one wants to see what we already know, dragged on into the sequels.
I do look forward to the sequels. Maybe

I do look forward to the sequels. Maybe change the writers, but keep the same director and actors.
I give 8 out of 10. 1 being The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler, 10 being boobs.

I liked it. A lot. The movie had a lot of heart in it, the acting was superb too. The incredible chemistry between Peter and Gwen is the real success of the movie here.
It felt real and sometimes kind of dark. In my opinion, this was the correct way of making a first spiderman movie and it's better than the 2002 Spiderman. But spidey 2 is still the champ for me. It will be very hard to beat. But as long as they keep this direction, this franchise will be as fresh as the new Star Trek.

The Weakest of ALL the Spider-Man films

This movie wasn't bad but it was very average in every way. Great cast but terribly written. They may be able to do great things from here on out but they are starting way down the latter here and FAR behind what Raimi established with his wonderful trilogy.

6/10 or there abouts.

It was beyond awful.
Really bad movie - the only good thing were the last 10 seconds. Oh well. The previous ones weren't good either, so. What an awful script, boring cinematography (except the last 10 seconds), bad editing and pacing, not the best acting, boring score (I love Horner), bad effects.

I think the soundtrack made the movie less bad. Not eve close to Danny Elfman's main title, but it was a good score.

not bad

it's a good movie, but not perfect, i like andrew G as peter and emma as Gwen , but i don't find any memorable scene and quotes on this movie, not like sam raimi spiderman, they have memorable kissing scene, and quotes "With great power comes great responsibility." ...but still , i will see if there is sequel of amazing spiderman
