What did you think of...War For The Planet of the Apes?

The third part of the newly rebooted PLANET OF THE APES franchise, WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES reunites the team of Matt Reeves in the director's chair and Any Serkis in the mo-cap suit, merging their significant talents to take the APES series to the next level. Considering the buzz that's built around this one it appears that WAR is the pinnacle of what was started with RISE and elevated by DAWN. Serkis returns in the role of Ape leader Caesar, flanked by fellow actors Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Judy Greer, Karin Konoval and Terry Notary in a story that looks to take itself as literal as the title would suggest and lead us closer to the film that started it all in 1968.

WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is currently sitting at a certified 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and our own Chris Bumbray gave it a 9/10, saying "...WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is among the best films of the year, and a blueprint for how movies made on this scale should be made. It's gorgeous to look at and exciting, but it’ll also hit you on an unexpectedly emotional level - and stick with you after." That's a hell of a recommendation.

Click below to check out all the trailers, interviews, spots, featurettes, clips & more for WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES below!

And with that, now it's your turn! We want to hear what YOU thought of the film! Naturally, we'd prefer you to comment only if you've seen the film as that's the point here, but do what feels good. Just don't get mad if you get trounced for trolling or posting blatant spoilers in headlines. Healthy debate, genuine thoughts, and respectful interactions is all we ask. So, is this the epic Apes film everyone is raving about or is it just flinging Chim Chim cookies at the screen?

Rotten Tomatoes: 148 reviews, avg score: 94%

It was good, but some small critiques

It was certainly an excellent movie, and I'll enjoy rewatching it on Blu-Ray many times. But I do have some minor critiques.

The first is the overall running time. The 2nd Act lags somewhat, and I can't help but feel that it could have benefited from having about a half hour cut out.

The comedy relief just felt really misplaced in such a somber film. It felt like the guy trying to be a comedian at a wake.

I'm not wild about Nova and Cornelius being born already. This to me suggests

I'm not wild about Nova and Cornelius being born already. This to me suggests that the 68 film remake would happen in only 100 years or less. The time of Cesar was always depicted as ancient history to the Apes. When we meet the Apes in the 68 film, their culture is roughly the equivalent of human European culture circa the 1600s. It would take a long time for the apes to get from Cesar to that point.

The avalanche didn't seem as big of a problem to me as it did to others. On ski hills, demolition experts are brought in to ignite controlled explosions and purposely start avalanches when no on is on the hill, so they don't happen when people are on the hill. So for an avalanche to happen right after the major explosions of a battle is perfectly fine to me. Although, I don't think this killed all the humans in the world as some seem to have suggested. I'm sure there's still humans somewhere on Earth at this point.

No nuclear war? Not sure how I feel about that. But with no nuclear war, there is no Forbidden Zone.

sorry, I didn't mean to suggest it killed all the humans in the world. Obviously there are random patches of people here and there, but THAT was indicated as the last major group of humans that had come together.

That's a reasonable take. I probably missed it, but what was the indication that it was the last major group of humans?

Fantastic. Tied with Logan for my favorite movie of the year. The Batman is in good hands with Matt Reeves.

AMAZING

the CGI in this movie is breathtaking and astonishing, I felt like the apes could actually coexist in this world thats how real was as the time went on it surly got way better. Woody was so menacing and cold he was great, Andy was the star of the show he was brilliant. This whole movie was fantastic all around and I loved that ending. Truly this film was a work of art. It was the best trilogy since Indy, and the first star wars. The score was actually really good too it took you into the world,

Great

I thought this film was a great ending to Caesars story. Although many people were probably expecting more of a "War" between human and apes, I enjoyed the play on the title that displayed a war from within Caesar himself. This film, I thought, had a perfect blend of all emotions, dialogue, and actor performances.

I posted a comment yesterday about how I wasn't super excited to see this, and that although I enjoyed the last two movies, they didn't blow me away the way they seem to have done for a lot of people.

Due to a bizzare chain of events, I saw this movie today...and I feel exactly the same. I enjoyed it, but it definitely had some story issues that took me out of it and some questionable decisions that dropped it down a peg or two in my eyes. Again, I didn't dislike it, Andy Serkis and Woody

Again, I didn't dislike it, Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson deliver some great performances, and I applaud them for telling a unique, unexpected story, but lets just say I have no intention of buying the blu-ray box set for this trilogy. Pretty good, but not great.

I will say that the friend I watched it with seemed to enjoy it a lot more after watching the previous two films recently. One of the gripes I had was that at times it felt a little unfocused and it seemed to bring up plot threads or hit emotional beats that didn't really resonate with me, so maybe having seen the earlier films would have helped.

I dug it!

This was a great film! Although the avalanche sequence at the end was a bit shoehorned in, I loved most of the rest. Unlike what someone else on this comments board said, there are few actors who can bring gravitas to the role of Caesar like Andy Serkis has. Lifetime achievements are usually reserved for the elders, but seeing as how he will likely never be nominated for an Oscar, Serkis deserves an early nod for his work. It's incredible, insightful, and certainly not an easy task. As the film's villain, Woody Harrelson embodies a despicably mad colonel with cool restraint. Nothing against the man's acting, but he's known to ham it up in other blockbusters, but not here. He's a morally complex antagonist. We understand where he's coming from and why he's chosen this path, but we don't agree with his actions. The other primate performances by Karin Konoval (Maurice) and Steve Zahn ("Bad Ape") are standouts, especially the former who has more to do and say here than in Dawn. Amiah Miller, as the mute child, Nova, delivers emotional warmth as a friend to the Apes. For a movie about War, there's more than a couple of quiet moments sprinkled in. I'm led to believe, beyond the imposing violence between man and ape, that the "War" in the title refers more so to Caesar's struggle inside him and his personal journey as he avenged his kind. I was never let down by the lack of huge, sustained action set pieces, although we get one big one in the final thirty minutes. It's a film built on tension and it sizzles.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who felt that the avalanche was shoehorned in to solve a major "issue" with 5 pages of script to go. (I don't mean issue as in a problem, I meant issue for Caesar and the apes). It didn't have the emotional impact I felt it should have had when witnessing the last major bastion of humanity fall. Of course there are still humans out there here and there, but very small pockets. I think the best depiction of the fall of humanity was int he opening credits of Dawn

For anyone who watched the trailers like myself, we knew the avalanche was a given. However, it still hurts me to admit I whispered to myself "that's convenient" at the end of the sequence where the humans are wiped out. It was the only scene that stood out from the rest as having built zero momentum from start to finish. I have no suggestion(s) as to how to remedy that bit. One more thing I'd like to add is that I was very satisfied with the final standoff between Woody's colonel and

Actually, I had an idea on how they could have remedied it. The Colonel was so radicalized in his belief that he defected from the Army in the North and was holding up there and resisting. He mentioned a massive weapons cache. What if he had a nuclear weapon and there was only a brief mention/glimpse of it. And we (the audience) didn't realize he activated it. And once his forces were defeated and the North Army celebrates, the camera pans to his deadbody and nearby the timer on the bomb as it

There would have to be some slight tweaks to get the apes away (possibly an underground tunnel that extends further than it did in the movie)

I hope this is it!

I saw an excerpt from an interview with screen rant where Reeve's talks about the possibilities for more sequels, which I really hope do not happen. This is Caesar's story, and this trilogy is one of the best, most consistent science fiction sagas in recent memory. They've said they have no plans to ever remake the original, which is good. But there's about 1,000 years until the events of the '68 movie happen, and I don't want the merit of these movies to be lessened by studio execs trying

I have to respectfully disagree. In another article trying to figure out the timeline of all the movies, I outlined my reasons as to why this new series is distinct and separate from the Prime timeline. So while some say they won't remake the '68 film, I ultimately think it's inevitable.

Having said that, I myself would very much like to see films that take place over the 1000 years between Cesar and the 68 film. None of them should focus on Cesar as a character. He should be long dead

But if they approach such films as they did this series, then I think I would very much like to see films based on major events in Ape history that bring them to the civilization in the 68' film. The Apes version of the fall of their Rome perhaps, or their WWII, or their Battle of Troy, etc.

If they do remake the 68 film, having these historical kinds of films in between would help make the Cesar films really feel like the ancient history they should be.

Shoulda been called "The Great Ape Escape"

Not much "war" going on. The title was misleading. I like Dawn best. Too slow and too comedic at times for my taste. I loved the gravitas and seriousness of Dawn.

Loved it

I'm quite happy with how it all worked out - - It was solid and had more depth than I expected -- Andy Serkis is great in it, as always -- I saw way more of his performance in Caesar this time. Solid trilogy all around!

Admittedly, I haven't seen the film. I enjoyed the first two movies but they really never impressed me the way they did a lot of people. I actually had the option to see it tonight but decided to go with a group of friends who hadn't seen Baby Driver so I could get a second viewing in. I'll see War of the Planet of the Apes eventually, but I feel pretty good about what I went to see tonight.

Pretty damn awesome, this movie really emphasizes the genius of Andy Serkis' work. The only thing that felt a little off was the avalanche at the end wiping out the rest of the humans. Seemed like a quick fix to eliminate the rest of the humans in the remaining 5 mins. "All of a Sudden an Avalanche kills all the surviving humans". A minor gripe.

The films you list there are either terrible films or his role is very small, he plays the cook in King Kong? How long is that role lol. Is avatar not the highest grossing film of all time? people seem to have flocked to see that more so than any serkis film.

Jar jar binks is a terrrible and horribly written character. So not sure why you'd try and use that comparison.

In dawn of the apes koba was a far better performance but no one called Toby a genius!

I'm not saying it's a bad

It was pretty good, I don't get the hype around serkis tho, Ceaser could literally be played by anyone and we wouldn't have a clue.

The film made me laugh, gasp and almost cry, it's fairly predictable tho.

I have to admit, I'm confused about the hype around Serkis as well. It seems to me that any good performer can be placed in mocap equipment. I'm not sure what makes Serkis particularly special, but I'm open to reading reasons.

Watch Gollum in all the Lord of the Rings movies,King Kong, and the first 2 Planet of the Apes movies of Caesar. Serkis is a great Character actor in all those movies in his walk, emotion, improv, and voice inflections. Gollum, to me, was his best work.

So because he can climb about like a monkey that makes it groundbreaking? If he's such a good actor how come he struggles to get work without using mocap? You could get a circus performer to do what he does.
