Shawn Levy has been secretly developing Real Steel 2

To all those people emailing us their fan scripts for a sequel to REAL STEEL, at ease everyone. You’re not the only ones who have been hard at work on the sequel, director Shawn Levy has been “quietly developing” it for years apparently. The first film starred Hugh Jackman as a washed-up boxer who turns to robot boxing to make a living; you know that old tale of man vs. machine and robot montages. While at the Toronto International Film Festival promoting his latest effort, THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU, Levy shared some news about a sequel.

Talking to ComingSoon he revealed:

“We have been quietly developing a sequel to ‘Real Steel’ for three and a half years. We’ve come up with some great scripts but Hugh and I would only make it if the plot feels fresh, but also the character journeys feel fresh, and we’ve found both but never at the same time. It’s ongoing. I know the clock is ticking.”

The clock is indeed ticking away; with this ‘idea’ we would likely still be waiting a few more years to see it. I totally forgot about this movie over the years so I can’t imagine a lot of people caring enough in few more. The film did fantastic overseas with $213 million while at home it underperformed with just $85 million on a reported budged of $110 million, and Levy knows that all too well.

Levy also talked about the box office and the love for the film:

“That movie, weirdly, for a movie that did very well globally – it did okay domestically – but the love for ‘Real Steel’ remains kind of unique as far as rabid fans who ask me all the time for another one. Hugh and I love that movie so if we can crack it, we’ll make it, but I have this sense that we better make that happen soon or frankly, the audience may not be there in the same way. So we shall see.”

I don’t think there is a particular need or want for this sequel, but I was never a fan of the first film. What about you guys? Do you want another REAL STEEL? Do you have robot fatigue yet?
