I came across this news over at The Hollywood Reporter and it instantly brought a smile to my face. The news I’m referring to is a couple casting announcements for the upcoming adaptation JONAH HEX. Now Josh Brolin has already been cast as the titular character with John Malkovich signing on as the villain and Megan Fox inked for the female lead. So who will be joining this trio in the supernatural old west fun?
Will Arnett and Michael Shannon of course! Now I can definitely see Shannon (right) fitting into this easily, but Arnett? Definitely not. But that’s why this news is so intriguing! I’m actually a big Will Arnett fan. He’s easily one of my favorite comedic actors and I’ve been dying to see him tackle a serious role, so JONAH HEX is perfect! What’s even more perfect? His role is described as ‘not inherently comic.’ Awesome. I’m hoping Arnett nails it! On a twisted piece of completely unrelated info… in my twisted mind I see Arnett as perfect casting for The Riddler in Nolan’s Gotham… I know, random right? Moving on.
Arnett (below) will play a Union soldier who enlists Hex and is blindsided by the dirty fighting style of his enemies while Shannon plays Doc Cross Williams, the bizarre ringleader of a brutal gladiator circus event. Apparently there’s an opening for Doc Williams to appear in further installments of JONAH HEX.
HEX is set to start production this month in Louisiana. The movie follows a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner who wants to raise an army of the undead to liberate the South. Jimmy Hayward is directing with a script from Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.
