Spiral: From the Book of Saw opening scene is a gruesome tongue twister

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

I know the Saw franchise isn't everyone's cup of tea and the series certainly grew needlessly convoluted as it went on, but I'm still a fan of what James Wan and Leigh Whannell started all those years ago. As we know, the franchise is set to make a return with Spiral: From the Book of Saw, a new film that will offer something fresh while still continuing the Saw mythology. Lionsgate has released the opening scene from Spiral, and all the familiar elements of the franchise are accounted for, including a rather gruesome trap which Detective Marv Boswick (Dan Petronijevic) finds himself at the mercy of.

Although the above clip doesn't shy away from good ol' blood and guts, Darren Lynn Bousman — who directed Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV — has previously said that the new film will tone down the gore, at least a little bit. "I was a younger person," Bousman said of his earlier Saw films. "Gore and violence was the gimmick, I think. Gore and violent is no longer a gimmick – it just serves the story. This is much more about character, tension and fear."

The official synopsis for Spiral: From the Book of Saw:

A criminal mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in Spiral, the terrifying new chapter from the book of Saw. Working in the shadow of his father, an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw will debut in theaters on May 14th.
