Spiral still spins in first place!

The overall domestic box office this weekend had about as much life as one of Jigsaw's victims, but the SAW continuation SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW remained on top with an estimated $4.5 million.

The ninth movie in the gore-splattered R-rated horror series was cut by 48% from its opening last weekend, taking it to a ten-day domestic total of $15.8 million.

The current global total of $22.5 million for Lionsgate's latest SAW chapter was sufficient to boost the entire franchise to a collective box office milestone of more than $1 billion worldwide.

Director Guy Ritchie's heist thriller WRATH OF MAN remained in second place with $2.9 million on its third weekend. The R-rated Jason Statham headliner has a domestic total of $18.8 million and a worldwide total of nearly $60 million.

In third place was the Angelina Jolie action-thriller THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD with $1.8 million, smoked by 35% from its opening last weekend (when it also premiered on HBO Max).

Director Taylor Sheridan's R-rated modern Western (which is showing on the most screens of the Top 10 with 3379) has a ten-day domestic total of $5.5 million and $13 million worldwide.

The animated Disney adventure RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON was in fourth place with $1.66 million. After 12 weekends on the top half of the chart, the PG-rated fantasy has a domestic total of $48.3 million and $109.2 million worldwide.

The monolithic creature clash GODZILLA VS. KONG lurched forward to fifth place with $1.43 million as it continues its slow stomp toward $100 million on its eighth domestic weekend. The $200 million Warner Bros. release has a worldwide total of $432 million.

In sixth place was the anime DEMON SLAYER – THE MOVIE: MUGEN TRAIN with $1.33 million over its fifth weekend on domestic screens for a $44.9 milllion total. The R-rated Sony FUNimation release has a worldwide total of $480 million.

The R-rated videogame adaptation MORTAL KOMBAT was in seventh place with $935,000 on its fifth weekend in theaters. The Warner Bros. release has a domestic total of $41.2 million and $79.7 million worldwide on a reported cost of $55 million.

In eighth place was the domestic theatrical release of PG-rated animated movie SCOOB! with an opening of $850,000 on 2500 screens. The Warner Bros. movie was initially planned to hit screens in May 2020 before the pandemic swayed the studio to put it on premium VOD instead (and then streaming on HBO Max).

Opening in ninth place was the new inspirational comedy DREAM HORSE with $844,000 in 1200 theaters. Based on a true story of an unlikely small-town racehorse, the PG-rated release stars Toni Collette and Damian Lewis.

Critics mostly cheered the feel-good tale, giving it an average of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and a nice score of 69 on Metacritic. Gallop over to the JoBlo review HERE.

At the bottom in tenth place was the PG-rated romatic drama FINDING YOU with $670,000 for a ten-day domestic total of $1.9 million.

Outside the chart, director Zack Snyder's action/horror/thriller/heist/zombie movie ARMY OF THE DEAD shambled off the list and onto Netflix (but can still be seen in a handful of theaters). The R-rated Timur Bekmambetov thriller PROFILE also disappeared.

The FAST & FURIOUS sequel F9 doesn't steer into domestic theaters until June 25, but the vehicular action is already spinning its wheels for international audiences, opening in a number of overseas territories and already driving away with $162 million.

The PG-13 Universal release from series director Justin Lin has Vin Diesel and his crew of car colleagues once again dealing with Charlize Theron's criminal mastermind, who now has Dominic's brother John Cena on her side.

Next weekend tries to kickstart the summer movie season with horror sequel A QUIET PLACE: PART II and the live-action Disney movie CRUELLA , with Emma Stone as the 101 DALMATIANS villainess.
