According to Variety, Hangtime International Pictures and Severin Films are attempting to remake Lucio Fulci‘s Italian horror classic The Beyond. This will be the first remake in the new partnership between the companies, which are both hoping to “secure remake rights to genre films for theatrical, streaming and physical media.” The companies hope to follow The Beyond with several more remakes in the next two years of their collaboration.

Frank Murray, the co-CEO of Hangtime, has made a statement about the new announcement, saying, “The impetus for this partnership was our shared commitment to fans of the genre and our desire to deliver for new horror audiences. This is a rare opportunity for an established director to reimagine ‘The Beyond,’ contemporize it as a classic of experiential horror and further the ever-growing cultural significance of Fulci’s work. We also love the built-in sequel opportunity afforded us by Fulci’s Gates of Hell universe.”

Meanwhile, Frida Torresblanco, co-CEO at Hangtime, added, “Severin is the ideal partner, not just in helping us navigate the rights process but as a uniquely knowledgeable creative sounding board.”

David Gregory, co-founder, president and CEO of Severin Films, also added his excitement to this announcement, saying, “Severin Films has devoted two decades to restoring and releasing genre films with the utmost respect for their originality and ongoing legacy. Reimagining these classic titles for a new generation presents a unique opportunity for the genre community, and we look forward to what this partnership will bring forth.”

Lucio Fulci’s classic

Not too long ago, a different version of The Beyond was released for the fans called The Composer’s Cut because it features a brand new score composed by Fabio Frizzi – who also composed the movie’s original score. Starring Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Sarah Keller, Antoine Saint-John, and Veronica Lazar, The Beyond shows what happens when a young woman inherits an old hotel only to find it sits atop a gateway to Hell and all manner of creatures lurk in the darkness.

The film is the second entry in Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy, which began with City of the Living Dead and ended with The House by the Cemetery.
