Other Mommy
That teaser trailer for Other Mommy that played before The Odyssey certainly made an impression. Perhaps it would be the big studios’ answer to Obsession? Other Mommy follows eight-year-old Bela, whose home life is already strained by her parents’ troubled marriage when a sinister presence she calls “Other Mommy” begins emerging from her closet each night. The entity repeatedly asks Bela one question: “Can I go inside your heart?” When the girl refuses, Other Mommy becomes increasingly aggressive, putting Bela and her entire family in danger.
First Impressions
So, did Jessica Chastain‘s creepy performance in the trailers pay off? Other Mommy has premiered in front of an audience and those viewers have gone to their social media to give their early reactions to the horror film. What are the reactions saying?
Rotten Tomatoes’ Peter Gray posted, “#OtherMommy: Despite that trailer and one surprisingly gory sequence, this INSIDIOUS-lite supernatural “horror” flick is more silly than it is scary. Jessica Chastain commits but that isn’t enough to overcome the stupidity.”
The Jam Report’s Doug Jamieson echoed, “OTHER MOMMY is truly dreadful. Despite one of the silliest horror plots of the year and a woeful script, it takes itself so staggeringly seriously. An endless parade of ineffective jump scares, awful CGI, and a finale that drew unintentional laughter several times. #OtherMommy”
User @HerbSimon1986 agrees that it’s a mess, but also says it’s fun, “Well, Jessica Chastain did the best she could & I won’t blame her at all. However, #OtherMommy is a pure mess and masterfully cringe, but it’s also a bonker fun if you truly want something to killing yr time on 3am. It’s like Rob Savage remaking ‘Boogeyman’ with a prestige cast”
Film Critic Sean Patrick Kelly seemed to be more positive than most when he said, “#OtherMommy is a film that I initially feared peaked during its pre credit sequence, i.e. the scene from the first trailer, but director Rob Savage delivers a demonic supernatural horror film that’s a mashup of everything from The Grudge to IT to Insidious.”
User @AlPacin11 thought the only positive was the little girl’s performance, “Other Mommy A movie that’s less than mediocre and not worth going to the cinema to watch. I watched the movie for Jessica’s sake, but unfortunately, the jump scare shots that were supposed to make you jump were super cheap. Actually, everything in the movie was exhausting, even Jessica’s acting, which people praise—I see it as average and it was off her usual form. The little girl’s acting is standout and it’s what keeps you going through the movie. By the way, the movie’s marketed as 50 jumps!”
