Whenever Pixar announces a new, original project, I can't help but get excited. Just like Laika, Pixar is an animation studio that continues to deliver top-quality cinematic experiences, be it a sequel to an existing property or otherwise. You can argue that a few of their franchises aren't as strong as the rest, but overall, Pixar is the crown jewel in delivering heartfelt stories built upon the backs of strong characters and worlds that feel alive in their populace and promise.
Today, Pixar has unveiled a list of their all-Latino voice cast for their upcoming animated film, COCO. The film's premise tells the tale of a young aspiring guitarist named Miguel who finds himself transported into the Land of the Dead. Let's work our way through the list of casting additions and then we'll top things off by sharing the film's gorgeous new poster with you all.
Fresh to the animation scene Anthony Gonzalez lends his voice to Miguel Rivera, a 12-year-old boy who harbors an undying passion for making music, despite his family’s longtime ban on all things melodic. Renée Victor will voice Miguel's strict but unrelentingly fierce Abuelita, while Ana Ofelia Murguía is set to voice the role of Miguel's treasured grandmother, Mamá Coco. When he and his dog Dante find themselves transported from their hometown of Santa Cecilia to the Land of the Dead, Miguel joins forces with a lively trickster named Hector (voiced by Gael García Bernal), in an effort to locate Miguel's deceased musical idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, who is set to be voiced by Benjamin Bratt. Together, the two will use their passion for music to guide Miguel back to his family, who are still alive and well on the other side of the death.
In addition to the above mentioned stars, actors Jamie Camil (JANE THE VIRGIN) and Sofía Espinosa will join the cast as Miguel's parents, while Luis Valdez lends his vocals to Miguel's uncle. While exploring The Land of the Dead, Miguel will encounter family members who have long-since passed, such as his great-grandmother Mamá Imelda (voiced by Alanna Ubach), his aunt Tía Rosita (Selene Luna), his great-grandfather Papá Julio (Alfonso Arau), and his twin uncles Tío Oscar and Tío Felipe (Herbert Siguenza). Furthermore, Miguel will meet other spirits along his journey, including the sour-minded Chicharrón (Edward James Olmos) and a corrections officer voiced by Cheech Marin.
