New trailer and character posters for Underworld: Blood Wars unleashed

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

I know it gets a lot of shit, but I actually really like the UNDERWORLD series. Well, I should say that I like the the idea of the UNDERWORLD series – shit it's a movie series about a war between vampires and werewolves, that should be awesome! I mean, I loved the first one (I think it still holds up), liked the second one (not a bad flick, just seemed to be a missed opportunity), didn't hate the third one (it was unnecessary and kind of dumb, but wasn't terrible), but I f*cking hated the fourth one, UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING. Thing is, the films seemed to be setting up Selene, the badass Vampire Death Dealer played by Kate Beckinsale, as a bridge between the Vampires and Lycans (the word for "werewolves" in the UNDERWORLD universe). She falls in love with a Werewolf (who's also half-Vampire…it gets confusing), and even seems to garner the respect of the Lycans in the sequel (in fact that's the last shot!) Hell, even the third film – which is a prequel – has the theme of Vampires and Lycans forming a union. So why the f*ck did it become "Selena kills Lycans" plot all over again in AWAKENING? And no Michael? Ugh…

Anyway, while AWAKENING left a bad taste in my mouth, I have hope for the sequel. The synopsis "Selene must fend off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her…and stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice" seems to imply an end to the struggle between Vampires and Lycans, so maybe it will go in the direction the series was headed before the fourth film came out. We'll have to wait and see. Until then, here is a new trailer:

And some very blue character posters:

I mean, they're dark, brooding, and very "UNDERWORLD" looking, so that's something. They're not going to sell you on the film if you're not already a convert, but they're not bad on their own, if a bit bland.

Either way, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS will come roaring into theaters January 6th, 2017 whether we like it or not.

What do you guys think? You guys fans of the series? And if so, how would you rank the films?
