Jump scares are a great way for filmmakers to get you to scream out loud, jump out of your seat, and potentially piss yourself, but when they aren't earned through the use of escalating tension and a satisfying payoff, they wind up feeling rather cheap. That's not to say that that's true for all jump scares, in capable hands they can be a powerful tool in the director's arsenal.
