Universal sets a release date for Wicked in December of 2019

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

The odds are pretty good that you’re fully aware of Wicked and it’s onslaught of catchy songs, but in case you’re not, the show is a re-telling of THE WIZARD OF OZ, told from the perspective of the witches. There’s been talk about a film for half a decade now, but it looks like Universal is finally ready to commit. WICKED will hit theaters on December 20, 2019. The film will be directed by Stephen Daldry (THE READER, BILLY ELLIOT), with Wicked writer Winnie Holzman and composter-lyricist Stephen Schwartz set to reunite for the film adaptation.

Like a lot of people, FROZEN introduced me to belting excellence of Idina Menzel, after which I sought out Wicked and rather enjoyed it! It’s a fun story filled with some great music, so I’m hoping that the film does the play justice. It’s going to be hard to top the original cast consisting of Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, but with 3 years standing between now and its release, there’s certainly plenty of time to find the right people!

WICKED is scheduled to hit theaters on >December 20, 2019.
