Tom Cruise officially signs on for Universal’s Mummy reboot opening in 2017

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Universal Pictures seemed pretty gung-ho on relaunching its classic movie monsters before DRACULA UNTOLD was released. Since then, it’s been a swirl of rumors. It looks as though they’ve had enough time to collect themselves and with the following news, it’s full steam ahead on the next movie monster! Variety is reporting that Tom Cruise has officially signed on to play opposite Sofia Boutella in THE MUMMY. Boutella will be playing the titular monster with Alex Kurtzman (PEOPLE LIKE US) directing a script from Jon Spaihts (DOCTOR STRANGE, PROMETHEUS).

While the names behind the camera might be a cause for concern, Tom Cruise knows how to pick a project. Variety reports that Cruise isn’t expected to produce, but does state that he has a hand in developing the project. Last we heard, the story followed a Navy Seal team on a mission to find a group of terrorists in a bunker, only to discover an ancient evil. No word yet if that plot will remain but the movie will take place in present day, unlike the Brendan Fraser flicks.

THE MUMMY is scheduled to hit theaters on June 9, 2017.

Are you excited for THE MUMMY now that Tom Cruise is on board?
