Kong: Skull Island will take the King Kong myth in a brand new direction

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

By the time King Kong returns in KONG: SKULL ISLAND, his myth will have undergone more than a few changes. Previous Kong films have utilized a period setting, a shady businessman/film director, and a blond woman who captures Kong's attentions. Tom Hiddleston spoke with Variety at the premiere of CRIMSON PEAK and revealed that KONG: SKULL ISLAND won't be be making use of all of those pre-existing Kong tropes:

It’s not set in the ’30s, there’s no movie director with a map. There’s no out-of-work actress down on her luck. All of that stuff is respected, we’re just trying to do something new with the myth because Kong is an icon of movies. I think he’s someone people want to see again.

Hiddleston was also quite impressed with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ vision for the picture, saying he has “come up with the most incredible, deeply imaginative context for [King Kong] to exist in.Tom Hiddleston wouldn't drop many other hints, but the actor will be flying to the set of KONG: SKULL ISLAND this Sunday to begin shooting. KONG: SKULL ISLAND stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and will "fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island."

KONG: SKULL ISLAND will be released on March 10, 2017, with GODZILLA 2 following on June 8, 2018 which will set up GODZILLA VS. KONG in 2020. In the meantime, you can check out Tom Hiddleston in CRIMSON PEAK on October 16, 2015.
