Yeah, this is actually happening. We have reached the point where the memes are becoming movies. Grumpy Cat, the cranky-faced animal that launched countless images, videos, and other social media tidbits has charmed enough individuals at the Lifetime network that they thought it would be prudent to give the feline celebrity his own feature film. I present GRUMPY CAT’S WORST CHRISTMAS EVER, the holiday movie that dozens will watch this holiday season.

Now, when this “movie” was being written and thought out, filmmakers must have researched all of the successful talking animal movies made throughout history and yet still thought this would be a good idea to make. On top of it, they decided that they needed to get someone with a voice that matched Grumpy Cat’s face and settled on PARKS AND RECREATION star Aubrey Plaza. Okay, so the casting of Plaza actually fits the film pretty well, but still, this is a bad idea.

Grumpy Cat is a lonely cat living in a mall pet shop. Because she always gets passed over and never gets chosen by customers, this kitty develops a sour outlook on life until…one day during the holidays, a very special 12-year-old girl named Chyrstal enters the pet store and falls in love with Grumpy Cat. A unique friendship is formed between the two when Chyrstal finds she is the only person who can hear this unique feline talk. In the middle of the holiday rush, Grumpy reluctantly thwarts the kidnapping of an expensive exotic dog she can’t stand and rescues Chyrstal after the mall closes on Christmas Eve. Will Grumpy Cat learn the true meaning of Christmas, or will it be in Grumpy’s words, “Worst. Christmas. Ever?”

There is no accounting for taste but there is no excuse for this movie to exist. For every great Christmas movie out there, Hallmark and Lifetime churn out dozens of treacly disasterpieces like this one. It is a wonder that people are so negative about the holidays these days. Still, it could be worse: we could have to watching SURVIVING CHRISTMAS or FRED CLAUS.

GRUMPY CAT’S WORST CHRISTMAS EVER premieres on Lifetime on November 29.
