It was only a matter of time but The Lonely Island boys are heading to the big screen! Universal has acquired an untitled comedy project from the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. The three will star in the movie (obviously) which is said to take place in the music world. Judd Apatow will produce the film with the trio as well with Schaffer and Taccone co-directing.
There isn’t a lot known about the project at this time so it’s time to speculate and hope for the best. Personally I wouldn’t mind a musical combined with sketches in the vein of THE KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE. Schaffer and Taccone have each directed those lovable SNL Digital Shorts; Schaffer directed the underrated HOT ROD and Taccone directed the more underrated MACGRUBER. Samberg returns to his Fox comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine imminently, so the start of production may have to wait until the spring.
