Does Captain America’s costume in The Winter Soldier tease Nick Fury’s fate?

While I am not the resident Captain America expert on staff here, I definitely am digging the new costume worn by Chris Evans in the posters and trailer for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. The subdued colors look less cartoony and a hell of a lot more badass. Fans of the character already know the costume well and that when it appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics, it was worn by Steve Rogers at a very different point in his career with S.H.I.E.L.D.

The trailers for the movie are already teasing major issues within S.H.I.E.L.D. that seem to pit Cap against Nick Fury and the other forces of the agency. We also see that Bucky Barnes, now The Winter Soldier, seems to be responsible for an attack on Nick Fury that puts puts the director in intensive care. Does Nick Fury die in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER? And, if he does, does Steve Rogers become S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new director?

Co-director Joe Russo told SFX that the various costumes worn by Captain America in the movie were deliberately selected.

“We wanted to use his Super Soldier outfit from the comic books as a way to represent, thematically, his place in the world of SHIELD and the difference between working for SHIELD and being Captain America.”

“We wanted to put Cap in a space where he’s a special forces operative for SHIELD who goes on missions around the world that are clandestine and sometimes require a certain level of anonymity or stealth,” he explained. “The movie has a very thematic component in terms of the use of costumes. When you come to see the film I think you’ll understand why we made the choice we made.”

Samuel L. Jackson‘s portrayal of Nick Fury is a nine-picture commitment with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER representing his fifth film playing the character. Killing him off may not be in the cards, but it doesn’t mean that Steve Rogers cannot take control of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the wake of the film’s events.

April 4th cannot come soon enough so that we can see for ourselves just how much CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER will shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
