I have this odd obsession with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Then again, I might have an odd obsession with most comic book films.
When you’re nine reading about these characters, like any book, you form a relationship with them. You see them in a light that only you can. I’ve always loved Peter Parker/Spider-Man. I had the biggest crush on him when I was a kid. So when the idea came around of bringing him to the big screen, I had all these ideas of what storylines would be perfect along with the introduction of specific villains. Sam Raimi did a nice job with the material though I can’t say I cared for the third installment. Marc Webb chose a great guy to play Peter, however, the first film didn’t rival what Raimi’s first Spidey installment did. I think my disappointment came with the use of the Lizard who I thought was a perfect choice, especially when I thought that Dylan Baker might get his opportunity to flesh out the character. Sadly, this didn’t happen—different director, different actor. Okay, I’m turning this into a five-hour rant. Short version of the story: it was Webb’s first comic film, and he hadn’t yet honed his skills.
Now the director says he’s getting aggressive with the sequel:
It’s huge. We’re pushing the levels of effects, the level of action and the emotional capacity of this kid. It’s an aggressive step forward.
A big gamble cause be a huge payoff, or a big lose. As we have already seen, this film is taking a big step forward especially with the inclusion of the Sinister Six. It’s more than that though, it’s a huge step with the sets and the action:
We throw around the term ‘operatic’ because of the spectacle and the theatre involved, which is pretty epic. There are enormous sets and great set-pieces. But really it’s a very intimate song – this relationship between Peter and Gwen is very delicate and beautiful.
Webb says it’s the “most ambitious” take on Spider-Man that’s ever been attempted, and we’ll find out when it releases on May 2, 2014.
