Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn says not to expect a new Indiana Jones for 2-3 years

After the news that Disney had reached a deal with Paramount for full rights to creating new Indiana Jones films, the next question was whether on not it would be fast-tracked like STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. After the PHANTOM MENACE like reception that INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL received, the question was whether the franchise could be revived to the glory days of the original three films.

Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn was asked that exact question and his answer was that a story would be needed before taking any steps and that would put a new INDIANA JONES film 2-3 years away. We have heard for a while now that both Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford are keen to return to the adventures of Dr. Jones with some sources claiming that Ford made his involvement with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII conditional on another Indy movie being greenlit. There has been no confirmation if that was in fact true.

Whether the studio has anyone actively developing a new Indiana Jones script is unknown but I would imagine given a 2-3 year window that they are at least exploring ideas. Horn mentioned again that the studio is progressing as full controllers of STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES but are still consulting George Lucas as necessary. If you have any question as to whether the studio is taking these new projects seriously, read this quote from Horn.

“Do I have to see it now and do I have to see it on the big screen? If the answer to both of those questions is no, then we have a big problem. My payhcheck has a mouse on it and I take it very seriously.”

I have faith in Disney even though some are skeptical. They may be a big corporation, but they do have an eye for quality and don’t tend to turn out shit just to make a buck. They made Marvel work and I have faith they will with both STAR WARS and Indiana Jones.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII hits theaters December 18, 2015.
